  • One of the most challenging points when learning guitar is moving from open chords to bar chords. Bar chords can seem like an absolute nightmare to play but a few tips for technique and an optimised guitar setup can go a long way to easing the pain - so much pain.
    3 types of bar chords:
    A. Full bar
    B. Partial bar
    C. Hinge bar
    Technique Tips:
    1. Curve your first finger
    2. Use the weight in your elbow
    3. Determine if you need a bar chord or not
    Guitar Tips:
    - Lower your action (file down the height of the bridge and/or neck nut(s)
    - adjust the truss rod (if you have one)
    String Ideas:
    - High tension. Good for attack/less sustain
    - Medium tension. Somewhere in between High & Low
    - Low tension. Easy to press/not as punchy/more sustain

    Kia ora fellow guitarists. Here's a pretty cool lesson on how to play bar chords. I'll be discussing a few awesome techniques, a good way to setup your guitar, and understanding string tension. Let your bar chords fly!

    Hi there Joshua. I'm 47 yrs old guy from Finland. Started my guitar hobby about a year ago and i'm hanging between classical music and gypsy jazz type of music. Classical music seems to be winning since i always find myself going through classical tutorials in here. I just wanted to say that i usually don't like tutorials with so much talking, but your personality got me stuck :) You seem very warm and good hearted person. There's too many other type of people in the world. But yeah, I'm more like "let's get to it" type of a person. Ofcourse there has to be talking too to get through every point and there is lots of different kind of beginners with different kind of needs, not just beginners like me. Don't you ever change what and how you are and how you teach in these videos :)

      Hey there 47 years old Jouni from Finland. We're almost the same age bro! The talking thing is so difficult to manage. Sometimes we TH-camrs just get carried away and so passionate when we're sharing stuff that we care about that the minutes seem like seconds. I'll keep on doing what I do and I wish you all the best with your guitar hobby :)

    I always have a sore wrist and hand from bar cords. If you keep playing when your sore you can find easier ways like going close to the fret and torquing up your elbow weight. Great tutorial as always.

      I think we're all plagued with getting sore be it from bar chords, extended practice sessions, or gruelling performances. Thanks for the props!

    Good presentation and overview. I have been experimenting with lowering my action and it is helping. Appreciate the discussion on string differences. Thank you!

      Glad it was helpful! I always feel for guitarists that struggle unnecessarily due to their guitar being poorly set up and/or playing with strings that are too old or not the right tension for their style and physiology.

      Hi from London UK Josh. Yes, I found your Tabs and I use them with your excellent video. I''ll be honest here Josh, I love this beautiful piece, its a bucket list for me along with Asturius, Cavatina and Rodrigo, however, I found an 'easier' or simplified version while looking for Adagio on here, I managed to finish it in a few weeks, then I saw your version! It blew my 'easier effort out the water, much harder, but so much better and ultimately rewarding, it will take months, but i'm used to that. Your version of Adagio is the most beautiful ive ever heard, i'm so please i found your channel, as an intermediate player i guess, I studied Carcassi's works for around 3 years, your playing and teachings are perfect for me. Thank you my friend.

    Does higher action give a valid excuse for not being able to a bar chord? I can do bar chords on all other types of guitars, but with my classical, I can’t. Mine doesn’t have a truss rod either. Should I try to lower the action? I’ve tried all the tips, and I still can’t barre on a my classical.

    • @nbnguitar
      @nbnguitar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will to a certain degree although for the most part a well-played barchord is a combination of many things including - strength, finger position, number of strings being barred, finger curvature etc. Definitely try lowering the action as far as you can without creating string buzz.

    Thanks for telling me my worst fear is real and there's no way to completely avoid the hand pain while playing songs with lot of bar chords :( Great advices mate, I didn't know about the truss rod since my guitar is an old Tatay but it's good to always learn new stuffs

    • @nbnguitar
      @nbnguitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Mind you that's only my experience and the experience of some friends that also play guitar for a living. Perhaps the very top echelon of players don't experience pain. I perhaps should have used the word fatigue instead of pain. What is a Tatay?

    • @Stuka124
      @Stuka124 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's ok! Tatay is a spanish classical guitar brand, they are pretty good but stop making them so long ago

    Great advice Josh. I have one tip for other players trying to adjust the action on their guitars. If you (or your luthier or guitar tech) sand down the depth of the saddle at the bridge (you called it a nut, which is also OK) it will obviously make the action lower. A great tip is to make, or have someone make, a couple of "shims" to sit under the saddle (in the routed slot of the bridge). That way you can raise and lower the action by taking 1 or more of the shims out from under the saddle. Also note, some classical guitars do not have truss rods because the stress/pressure created by the string tension is not as high with nylon strings as it is with steel strings.
    Thanks, John

    Very nice guitar, as for the bar chords, my problem, for example with f chord, is not so much with the bar finger, but with my middle, which just don't stay curved. Same problem with the g major and my ring finger..

    • @nbnguitar
      @nbnguitar  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. I do love my guitar. Why not try some simple scale work or exercises to strengthen your other fingers?

    • @slowswimmer9169
      @slowswimmer9169 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the reply, I'm doing some stretching and exercises etc, but currently the don't seem to help so much. Maybe is a matter of length, my fingers are rather short for a 52" width classical guitar. Eventually I will find a way to play the damn chords. So thanks again , keep the good work!

      Hi Malie. Man, I've been taking care of my wife and holding down a full time job haha. My wife's been sick for the past week and her health comes first. We usually perform together and since she's been sick I've had to do our shows alone plus the multitude of other things that happen in life. It's all good though as I'm never too far away from uploading another video.
