How is the lullabies to paralyze covert art bad? Genuine question btw... I don't even like the album, but I don't see anything wrong with the cover art?
So, a bit of backstory for you brad. Songs for the Deaf is the 3rd QOTSA album. The first two were a bit artsy, super alternative, very non-mainstream. I love the first two, they're masterpieces, but it's fair to say that they weren't huge commercial successes. So album three comes around and the record label is demanding something more commercial. Songs for the Deaf is that album. The bassist (Nick Oliveri) coming into the album felt that the songs were too loose, too different and that it could really do with a concept to hold it together. So, here's the story: Songs for the deaf is about the drive from LA to Joshua tree. This was a drive that Josh Homme (the lead guitarist and singer) was well acquainted with, as he lived in LA and was from Joshua Tree. The Album is him driving, picking up the different stations as he goes. The different radio stations are not really particular locations, but many of them poke fun at particular radio stations or hosts. There's a great video from Middle 8 about this if you want more info ( th-cam.com/video/PgW8UolRrl4/w-d-xo.html ) It was a huge success and really thew QOTSA into the spotlight. You mentioned loving the drumming on the album, all I can say is Dave Grohl. Finally, you mentioned the sharp production, that's courtesy of legendary producer Eric Valentine. Again there's a good video on this. Loved the video, really interesting to see your reaction to one of my favourite albums by one of my favourite bands.
My favorite part about the album's production is that they recorded the cymbals and the drums separately so that they could compress them differently and get a really punchy drum sound but still have a really clear cymbal sound. It's really expensive by way of studio time to do that but they decided it's worth it.
The reason the riffs sound different and unique is that when Josh Homme was learning guitar, he would take scales and take out some notes and put in ones that werent part of the scale, thats why his sound in QOTSA and Kyuss (please do a video on Welcome to Sky Valley by Kyuss, its a banger of an album) sounds so unique. They're HIS riffs, they're HIS scales, and distinctive.
Damn, I really don't know how you cut this vid between Hanging Tree and Go With The Flow. I feel like those two tracks NEED to be played one after the other. Can't wait for part 2!
claus phoenix I was really questioning why he had Lil Yatchy of all rappers, be on a track. I thought the first half was boring, then it started to pick up midway through with all the singles then kind of went back to boring
Loved this cant wait for part 2. Love this album and was awesome to see the big intro grab you. I recommend IDLES - Brutalism or Viagra Boys - Street Worms for some quirky rock from recent times.
I love this album. I can’t ever listen to it for the first time again, so I come back here every so often to relate to the reaction. Then I jump in the car and put this album on full blast
try Blues for the Red Sun-Kyuss, Josh Homme was their guitarist. Honestly it's one of the best albums I've listened to in my entire life and it's also stoner rock.
Hey Brad listen to Modest Mouse's "The Lonesome Crowded West". Isaac Brock is a Fantastic lyricist, the instrumentals are raw, and it's certainly seen as a classic in alternative rock. This album is probably their best but all of their first 3 albums are great (4 is really good too). The opening to TLCW is one of my favourite songs of all time, although I hated it for a while because, despite how amazingly Brock's vocals suit the music, they certainly take some getting used to. Anyway, great album great band, potentially interesting video idea, give'm a listen. Edit: Tom York

The bassist (Nick Oliveri) coming into the album felt that the songs were too loose, too different and that it could really do with a concept to hold it together. So, here's the story:
Songs for the deaf is about the drive from LA to Joshua tree. There's a great video from Middle 8 about this if you want more info ( th-cam.com/video/PgW8UolRrl4/w-d-xo.html )
It was a huge success and really thew QOTSA into the spotlight.
I love six shooter. One of my favorites, the hilariously aggressive lyrics and vocals and the short run time make it oh soo sweet.
My favorite part about the album's production is that they recorded the cymbals and the drums separately so that they could compress them differently and get a really punchy drum sound but still have a really clear cymbal sound. It's really expensive by way of studio time to do that but they decided it's worth it.
What amazing timing on that pause 13:29
The reason the riffs sound different and unique is that when Josh Homme was learning guitar, he would take scales and take out some notes and put in ones that werent part of the scale, thats why his sound in QOTSA and Kyuss (please do a video on Welcome to Sky Valley by Kyuss, its a banger of an album) sounds so unique. They're HIS riffs, they're HIS scales, and distinctive.
Damn, I really don't know how you cut this vid between Hanging Tree and Go With The Flow. I feel like those two tracks NEED to be played one after the other. Can't wait for part 2!
Omg he stopped perfectly for that "EHY" on song for the dead, blessed timing
So glad you enjoyed this!!!
is this where the red headphones/shrug and smiley ball rating system was established?
I’m guessing so
"Seems like its gonna be pretty chill"
Song: "TENTOFOURWIHTALIQOURSTORE!!"
Just waiting for three parts of Joji's Nectar lol
Ngl wasn’t really impressed on first listen. Maybe it’ll change
@@elijahmoon5057 I enjoyed the first half of the album, the second half of it was really boring
@@elijahmoon5057 i think all the feats sucks, but enjoyed most part of it. Kinda long, ngl
claus phoenix I was really questioning why he had Lil Yatchy of all rappers, be on a track. I thought the first half was boring, then it started to pick up midway through with all the singles then kind of went back to boring
Rick Harrison Joji and Yachty had a little bit of a past. they did an interview together and it was pretty funny :)
The album is about a road trip into the desert after a fight or confrontation of some sort, on drugs.
"Its got a stoner rock feel too it"... Well... The singer... He kinda invented that genre... So... Yeah maybe a little bit.
Just a bit
Man, we're all waiting for Era Vulgaris. Cmon, please
Dude I was watching a video on Queens creating this album and they literally mention ZZTop as an influence to some degree. Good ear!
Loved this cant wait for part 2. Love this album and was awesome to see the big intro grab you. I recommend IDLES - Brutalism or Viagra Boys - Street Worms for some quirky rock from recent times.
Highly recommend their album ...Like Clockwork, easily their best along with songs for the deaf
I didn't like like clockwork
I love this album.
I can’t ever listen to it for the first time again, so I come back here every so often to relate to the reaction.
Then I jump in the car and put this album on full blast
I knew Brad was gonna love Millionaire lol. You can thank Josh Homme for those incredible riffs and guitar tones.
Good shit, Bradley. Love this album and it's fun to see you react to it. Looking forward to part 2!
try Blues for the Red Sun-Kyuss, Josh Homme was their guitarist. Honestly it's one of the best albums I've listened to in my entire life and it's also stoner rock.
And the circus leaves town is probably my favourite tho
This is what reaction videos should be.
What do you think of their albums past their earliest work?
@@matiasbosques3002 I like most of the songs on good news a lot, we were dead is very hit or miss but also has some of my favourites on it. And then there’s strangers, which I haven’t fully listened through. Lampshades on fire is pretty cool though.
I’d say it’s more of a classic in indie rock than alternative rock.
@@rashotcake6945 You’re probably right, I have no fucking clue what most of the genre labels mean.
Dude Josh (the lead singer) was part of the biggest stoner rock/stoner movement band ever KYUSS
4:28 fun fact, Dave Grohl
this was in my recommendations and holy shit i love your energy dude
Interesting, I'd say Hanging Tree is by far my favorite on this album. Loved the reaction tho!
Ayy, I knew you'd be here! Hope Brad checks out your reaction to this album as well.
It’s definitely up there, so smooth.
Alain Johannes is really a good compositor
