I keep saying this, but indie developers are literally the future of keeping 3D platformers alive. Please support them instead of begging studios like Rare or Naughty Dog to make new Banjo or Jak games. They clearly aren't interested, and we're wasting our energy, hoping they do when we could go support games like Penny's Big Breakaway or Rollin Rascal.
Indie games keep most of gaming alive, not afraid to try something new, think outside the box,and because they don’t have the money to go for super realistic graphics, they go for a more stylised look which ultimately makes it look better and more fresh. I feel like lots of triple a games have a formula behind them and don’t want to do anything different because they risk some game critic who isn’t even their target audience may be thinking the game is bad. Games are still good this way but they just can’t get better or evolve this way
this will be even more true once the hard working lead artists from older chains pass away, there will no longer be a market for new games 25 years from now. Unless indie devs are the primary partners for console manufacturers 12-25 years for now, then we might see progress. Toys For Bob does need to work on Rare Remaster of DK64 and C.O.D. for Switch & Switch 2. Could we get outfits and skins from other games for our flamethrowers, characters, and banners?
we also have bfbb and spongebob movie mods that demonstrate the missed potential of what we should've been playing and given how unique it is modding a licensed game made in 6th gen this old.

@@amygeer2217 huh? Sales are what makes games get made. I'd love to live in a world where developers made all the games I wanted specifically, but that's not really how it works. Sales indicate player interest, so of course companies make games and sequels in series that sell well. While it is definitely about the money, that's what big sales numbers indicate: happy fans! You can't make every fan happy since as a business they have to make positive investments and there's literally no way to please everyone. They have to compromise, pick and choose what to and what to not greenlight. Now, a lot of the big companies like PlayStation and Microsoft have the funds to pump out all kinds of experimental stuff without really losing a lot of money, but big companies like that have so much going on under the hood that we can't really see the full picture. That's a whole other conversation, so I'm not even gonna try to explain that. But the main thing that irked me here was that you blamed the developers. Please, don't blame the devs. They just make whatever they're greenlit to create and that's that. Unless you're on a super prestigious team like the big 3D Mario team or Zelda team, you don't get to choose what you make. If you take away ANYTHING from this, remember that it's pretty much never the devs who are to blame. It's the higher-ups that put on the money, time, and creativity constraints.
It's really upsetting how platformers, 3D platformers esseptailly, aren't really respected or cared for in the modern gaming landscape. People usually go towards shooters or multiplayer games that involve little to no platforming elements and as of right now the only sucessful major 3D platformers we got on the market consitantly is Mario and Sonic. I just feel the genre has so much potential that a lot of studios arent taking advantage of cause of the declining popularity of the genre. Sure it may not be the 2000s anymore but that doesnt mean we should abandon 3D platformers as a whole. we need to give Mario and Sonic some help their backs must be hurting from all the carrying theyre doing lol.
Thanks so much for updating that Toys for Bob story it's annoying Twitter runs with a story without doing extra research. To add to it the studios building was shut down and are working from home as of right now
We can't forget about the Lego games. Their games take waaaay longer to come out now, but they always deliver. The Skywalker Saga was the 5th best-selling game of 2022. Granted, these games are always licensed; the last original Lego game was Ninjago in 2017, and I'd love to see their IPs like Bionicle get a modern game one day. Either way, Lego's still got it
It is a pretty sad state that 3D platformers are in when we only have three major AAA platformers, and Kirby only recently got his first 3D platformer. Aside from them, it's pretty much just the indie scene keeping 3D platformers alive and while they provide great games, I wish we didn't have to rely solely on the indies for 3D platformers aside from Nintendo and SEGA.
It really hurts that this genre feels so dead, sure we have these indie games but what about the big ones who were so big back then. It hurts me mainly for Crash and Klonoa, I love these series despite despite playing only the recent games it sucks that they keep bringing back these platformers and just dispose of them immediately just because they aren’t making the molah other game genres are making. I hope this genre will comeback bc I’m tired of having no games for my favorite type of games.
3D Platformers im most excited about: - next 3D Mario - Sonic x Shadow Generations - Tomba 1+2 remasters 3D Platformers I want to see return: - Spyro - Klonoa - Crash Bandicoot - Sly Cooper - Jak & Daxter - Pacman World 2
I completely agree. Platformers are my favorite game genre (always have been), and it just kind of hurts to see how much more scarce they've become in recent years. Games like Banjo-Kazooie and Jak & Daxter mean *so* much to me, and I really hope we can eventually return to a point where these games are thriving once again. And as far as icons like Rayman being kind of dead or in limbo... I'd actually also include DK/DKC in that. It's legit been a decade now since Tropical Freeze, with no real signs (beyond just rumors) of a new game happening anytime soon. And that really sucks. I hope we hear about a new game soon. But, yeah. Like you said, it feels like the genre is barely holding on outside of Mario, Sonic, and (more recently) Kirby. I just want to see more. It deserves to be more.
The one thing I hate with big companies is their need to try make everything as big and expensive as possible instead of doing lower sized budget that might have an easier time making a decent profit plus they have to market them better if they want platform Mets to sell well The platformmers I want to return the most are Jak and Daxter Ratchet Spyro Crash Banjo Rayman
My most wanted games: - Spyro 4 - Banjo Threeie - a new open world donkey kong - a GOOD open world pokemon game - Tomba 3 I won't buy the new halo, or cod
Kirby selling so well makes me happy. I’m sure games like this don’t need the ridiculous budgets from other AAA games. I would love to have a proper Astro game in PS5 but Sony just works in third person action adventure games with a parent figure.
Sure, in terms of _AAA_ 3D platformers, it pretty much _is_ whittled down to just Mario and Sonic (and Pac-Man World if Namco cares to continue that series), but that's where the boom in _indie_ 3D platformers comes into play. And trust me, in the long run you won't wanna dismiss indie games, and the kindsa people who do are weak, their bloodlines are weak, and they won't survive the winter.
Nintendo, sega, and indie devs help alot, mario oddessy, spark 2 and 3, sonic frontiers, rollin rascal, mario 3d world, kirby and the forgotten land, i can go on
3D platformers are my favorite game genre and ill always try my best to support as much as i can i recently bought new super luckys tale and psychonauts 1 during playstation's sale and god they're so good man i love kao the kangaroo, sonic frontiers, bfbb rehydrated... it's a massive shame they're being shafted so hard
I think the current state of 3D platformers is due to the current state of the industry as a whole. A good chunk of companies now have the mindset of "Go big or go home" and while usually that's fine, the bad part is it's for EVERY. SINGLE. GAME. Every game is now required to be the next BOTW or the next Mario 64. It has to revolutionise the industry, it needs to have a budget of 150 million dollars MINIMUM, file sizes are off the charts (There is NO reason for FF7 Rebirth or COD to be hundreds of gigabytes), etc. Companies don't realise people just want a good 3D platformer to chill out with and have fun, we don't care if it's revolutionary, as long as it's good and not another Sonic Forces or Balan Wonderworld Mario Odyssey and Kirby & The Forgotten Land are such beloved titles and considered must-haves for the switch, but they aren't revolutionary. They're just really fun games and that's all they need to be.
i feel everyone needs to just realize to just play the indies and give them the same level of respect as the big boys if not more, you'll probably get an experience better than what the big studios could provide for a third of the price. yall gotta stop relying on the big studios for your fix and throw the small guys a bone if you really want that genre. especially this year and going forward theres stuff like penny's big breakaway, billie bust up, rollin rascal, the plucky squire, and much more. if you want 2.5D stuff theres doubleshake and restitched. if you dont wanna wait theres a hat in time, demon turf, bomb rush cyberfunk (even if thats a different audience), lunistice, and the toree games. the genre will only thrive if we stop acting like its dead and embrace what we have. if folks want more 3d platformers and say "no ones gonna play that indie shit" and devaluing them, yall are part of the problem straight up
The only Indie games I don't like are the ones with large followings (this is just a personal problem) but I'm the most interested in Penny's Big Break away .
I still pray for Spyro 4. After the Crash Team Racing n Crash Team Fumble, Spyro deserves a new game at this point. I hope Toys For Bob are still alive n for the devs that lost their jobs are able to find new jobs n maybe help out on producing new 3d platformers
@@lemon5000-tj6nv Yap, reminds me of how Sega Nights is basically a Sonic character at this point. Tho with Sega announcing that they will reboot their old ips, maybe Nights might get a break n gets his/her own game. Just hope for Spyro's case that Toys for Bob is still around n are able to make Spyro 4. If not, then at least a new team
I think the meta era of the franchise was probably the blame for this. Of course it could be many other reasons that don’t have to do with the meta era, personally I still stuck with the blue blur even through that era and even after forces because Sonic was always one of my favorites, granted I didn’t pay as much attention, but Frontiers really brought me back :) Hope this answers your question!
@@theinfinitesoul4480 Not really. When people say they've "outgrown" something, that usually implies that they're too old for it. How does poor quality make someone too old for something? Then again, maybe (ex?) Sonic fans are using that term, not really knowing what it means, which wouldn't surprise me, considering they call Sonic characters like Amy a "Stalker", Shadow an "edgelord", Rouge a "slut", etc, etc, and other have pointed out how that's not the case.
Well Phil Spencer has said in the past that they at Xbox leave it up to the developers as to what games they want to develop, including Rare, but sadly, Rare isn't interested in developing anything Banjo related nor do they really have any interest in remaking Banjo, but rather new ideas. Hopefully an Xbox studio like Toys for Bob can make a new Banjo like they did for Spyro and Crash. The main creative head at Toys For Bob, Paul Yan, has said if he had the chance to make a new title for Banjo he would.
Platformers in General deserve respect in general because if it weren’t for the first Super Mario Bros which saved the video game industry we may not have any video games at all. I just wish companies besides Nintendo or Sega could go back to making great masterpieces.
@@GamesCage Also the problem is that Companies are just not listening, no matter how vocal we are. They need to stop thinking about profits and start thinking about their fan bases because we just want to see our favorite characters again more than anything. To be honest I’m just at my wits end with modern gaming, don’t worry I’m not abandoning it unlike most people, in fact I’m only supporting games that are actually good.
Yeah, it's a real bummer that every time we might get something new, or some of the other icons might get a second chance, it's taken away from us. For the good things this timeline has given, it's situation like this that remind me why I also hate it.
I've always been of the general notion that 3D platformers are what carry gaming. They're very fun replayable, and never really get stale (at least if they're good). They also have so much accessibilty since they aren't as complex as other genres. I've always loved and preferred 3D platformers, and I would love to actually make one too. Indie games have really sparked an inspiration in me to see other IPs and platformers through to fulfillment. I'll always have a deep love for games like Mega Man, Spyro, Crash, Pac-Man and other IPs, but they all seem so... dead. It's kinda depressing... (Also, I know they aren't 3D platformers, but since we're on the topic of indie games, I think everyone should go play Heart&Slash and Owlboy, both of which came out pretty long ago. They have different tones and playstyles, but I think they have so much potential. Especially if you like Sonic or Mega man, I would highly recommend Heart&Slash, it's got the story and edge of those series)
the problem with gaming is that little kids don’t care about platformers. They want their multiplayer phenomenons like fortnite and don’t have the attention span to spend time on platformers
Even in indie games, I feel like a lot of them are going the sandbox collect-a-thon route. A Hat In Time, Yooka-laylee, Clive & Wrench, and so on. That's why I'm looking forward to Penny's Big Breakaway. To put it in Mario terms, it looks less Odyssey and more 3D World.
@@GamesCage Same, I'm not too worried though they both only just came out within the last 2 years. If we don't hear anything by 2026 that's when I'm gonna start panicking.
I feel like the genre could definitely be expanded on which Nintendo is actively doing with their latest Mario game. Sonic is one of those that need to get better with level design before they start innovating new ways to improve the genre. I haven't played nor watched Rift Apart and have been saving it for a time where I can play it, I heard mixed opinions but yeah. Sad the only two that are putting out games is Nintendo and Sega with Sonic and Mario, wished there were more competition tbh.
These are some other 3d platformers that appeared in recent years: Pseudoregalia (movement is some parts similar to Mario 64, and maybe other influences) Corn Kidz 64 ("Corn Kidz 64: A NEW 64-bit 3D Platformer! - Petronious" 6m40 - 6m54. Petronious describes it as "somewhere in the middle of Banjo Kazooie and Super Mario 64". ) Cavern of Dreams (the dev Bynine Studios for this ever posted in reddit BanjoKazooie) But yeah, Penny's Big Breakaway OST Balearic Birds is nice. I gotta listen to more of them.
I'm personally pissed that Ubisoft refuses to bring the Prince of Persia; Sands of Time Trilogy back in some way. They ported it once on the PS3 and that was it when those 3 games are beloved and were ahead of it's time...instead we have this generic killmonger unnamed looking guard that's supposed to "save" the prince like he's some damsel in distress smh. Then again they can't even treat Rayman right so my hope is lost for these games to be revived...
Thank you man for telling us your thoughts about this situation, to be really honest i never know the platform genre is not fully respected and how much trouble it might have to face, it hurts more to me to know how crash, banjo, rayman isn't really given that much chnace to try and shine to help the genre grow great again maybr likr in the 2000s, anways stay positive there is always a way to a problem.
And they're still going to find some way to downplay Sonic even after Frontiers, we can't afford to be stingy anymore Sonic Mario Kirby and the Indie title they're all we have
I love indie platformers like A Juggler's Tale, Bramble: The Mountain King, Deadlight, Black the Fall, Somerville, and Inside. I know that they're cinematic platformers, but they still count. Penny's Big Breakaway and The Plucky Squire look interesting. Even the Rugrats Adventures in Gameland releasing next month looks good.
3D platformers are such a pure expression of game design when done well, so it is sad to see the genre not really popular in the mainstream BUT the genre is alive and thriving in the indie scene. games like penny's big breakaway, cavern of dreams, corn kidz 64 and pseudoregalia are doing things that we would never get from nintendo or sega or sony, even at their peak. furthermore, there are so many older indie platformers that are worth your time from years ago - grow home/grow up, snake pass, supraland and its expansions, a hat in time, etc. if you want to see this genre flourish, don't beg these super corporations to make the game you want - buy these indie games at full price and leave a good review!! taste is subjective but these games are some of my favorite games of all time and deserve your attention. (and if you have any other suggestions hit me up i'm always looking for new ones)
Microsoft's bizarre choices confuse me more then Nintendo sometimes, they have all of these IPs at their disposal and almost every single one doesn't get ANYTHING anymore and it pisses me off when I hear how they want to keep buying studios up because they already have so much they dont even use ever but they just let Banjo die and the future of Crash and Spyro are now uncertain. I may not care for every platformer series out there but just seeing very few options left is genuinely depressing when this genre use to thrive for the past few decades.
What you said at the end is exactly my thought. I don’t get why these big publishers feel like sales need to be in the high millions to be considered a success. I don’t understand the whole picture, but it just feels that games are getting so expensive to produce or people at the top of these publishers are taking in too much profit that their expectations just grow to absurd levels. If a niche platformer returns and sells a million with no marketing, that should be celebrated. It’s such a shame that the genre has fallen off in the non-indie scene.
The first platform game that I played was Super Mario Advance. Literally my first introduction to the Nintendo gaming universe. And my first 3d platform game was Super Mario Sunshine. Since then, I've been hooked on the 3D platform games genre, especially collect-a-thons. Haven't looked back since. Speaking of, have you played the most recent indie 3D platform games, Fadel? You know, like Pseudoregalia? Or Celeste 64? Man. Indie devs are goated.
I haven't paid much attention to Klonoa, but Pac-Man World Re-Pac does seem to have sold fairly well. It was in the top 10 of the Switch eShop's best sellers list the week it came out, and they recently did a survey gauging interest for more Pac-Man World games. The fact they're even considering doing more means it has to have done well. At the very least, Re-Pac seems to be the best-selling Pac-Man game since Championship Edition DX back in 2010.
As someone who grew up during the Golden age of 3D gaming, there's something heartbreaking about watching such a beloved gaming medium fade into obscurity. Mario still makes quality 3D Platformers, but they only come out only other Blue Moon. And Sonic hasn't had a FULLY 3D Platformer since Sonic 06 (Holy crap it's been over 18 years: send help), which is sad😢 Thank goodness for the Indie scene, otherwise I bet people would have forgotten about 3D Platformers
Sonys lackin the most imo. Xbox is definitely shitting the bed by not doing ANYTHING with Banjo, but Sony hasn't done a damn thing with Sly Cooper, Jak & Daxter, Sackboy, Medievil, Gravity Rush, and probably way more. At least Nintendo keeps pushing the envelope with Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Bowsers Fury. And you can bet the next 3D Mario will be a banger
I got a real good feeling Spyro at the very least'll be coming back soon, 2024's the Year of the Dragon and their social media accounts have been oddly active lately, way more than normal at least, not to mention putting him and some other Spyro characters in Crash Team Rumble (for whatever that's worth lmao). I feel like we're not too far off another 3D renaissance though, here's hoping
I've pretty much lost hope for a spyro 4, last year was spyros 25th anniversary and he came to ctrumble on the same day as the game awards, if spyro 4 is real then they had the perfect opportunity to announce it but they never did Geoft Keghley was also in the celebration video for the anniversary There were also teases years before this like the spyro 4 sign in the crash 4 artbook If it happens then good, if it doesnt then it doesnt matter
@lemon5000-tj6nv Nah I get that, I'm probably too optimistic and will be let down again lmao. My way of thinking is maybe they initially wanted to announce it then but the Activision buyout and management shifting delayed some things a little, not to mention how long it took from Rumble getting leaked to actually releasing as well, could just be a long development and they dont wanna announce things early just in case. I'm holding out my last hope for Summer Games Fest though, if it's not there, then it's depression time
I find it weird when people talk about 3d platformers people dont talk about action platformers like Titanfall 2, Kena Bridge of Spirits, Jedi Fallen Order and Jedi Survivor. Jedi Survivor was the 9th best selling game and it was a platformwr theoihh and through.
It just really sucks. Platformers as a genre just went from the top of the pile to something that's honestly kinda niche these days. But platformers CAN thrive. Even outside of the constants like Mario like there's POTENTIAL here. Maybe they won't sell as much as the big "AAAA" games but they don't need to, and they don't need to be big budget projects either. And the indie scene is basically keeping blood pumping in the genre at all. It really felt like we were starting to see a 2nd Renaissance for the genre. It still does (I mean christ even GEX is coming back in some form) and I hope and pray that doesn't get cut short
@@GamesCage Grab a seat and some scented candles and we can wait. I been waiting 15 years for a new Banjo. And at this rate I'll be waiting 15 more 😵💫
pac man world is the only one i feel like has the chance to stick around, its a lower-mid budget game so it doesnt need to sell millions upon millions to do well, and other bamco series like digimon and tales of still get new games even tho they dont sell massive AAA numbers
I was shocked seeing Spyro sell 10 million on copies 😮 if he’s selling that many, than no doubt Sonic Frontiers will be a major success and surpass 5M+ given its good rating and how Spyro RT was released six years ago… so it did eventually get to its 10 million mark 📈
Is it just me or are 3D platformers more successful on the Switch than on other home consoles? I mean I’ve never met anyone who has played a 3D platformer on an Xbox or PlayStation since the PS2 and original Xbox. I’d say the only platform that holds a candle to the switch in terms of playing Indie games and smaller less popular forms of games like 3D platformers is PC Gaming.
If microsoft didn't own the rights to the rare titles we would've seen a bunch of classics being brought back a long time ago. I would personally love to see a new Banjo or even Conker game.
Y'know, horror and point and click adventure style games were in a similar boat not TOO long ago, Amnesia: The Dark Descent came out in 2010 and sort of revitalized the genre, in large part thanks to Let's Plays becoming a big thing around the same time. Point and click adventure games had a big resurgence thanks to a bunch of dedicated fans of the genre seeing the huge gap deciding to make their own. It might not take shape the same way with 3D platformers, but videos and discussion like this can only help. WIthin the last few years, we're already seeing a minor resurgence in the indie scene, more 3D platformers are coming out now than they have in decades. I know that's like, 10 games, but the genre really was THAT dead. Keep being vocal about the genre and who knows, it might inspire more indie devs to take their own shots at it, and we know how the mainstream gaming industry likes to chase trends.
3d Platform games are like other genres I love like 3d fighting games (Not just Tekken or anime Arena fighters), Hack n Slash/ character action games, and heck even 3D beat em up. You'll always have the popular series but I feel like we see less and less of those genres in AAA games and heck even the Indie scene because sadly it's all about what's gonna make the most money and not about trying something different or even smaller now.
That's why mario been carrying for so long. Without him, I don't know where 3d platformers would even be for me. It's important that he continues to do so, leading as an example. He's the godfather of platform characters after all.
I'm so excited to see what Gears of Breakfast does next after A Hat in Time, it's been 5 years since Nyakuza Metro came out, they must be cooking something
Recently been putting a lot of thought into this. Especially on the PlayStation front, and the platformer series they own. Because they're literally sitting on a goldmine of IP's that they just don't intend to use. As you said, Sly Cooper. People have been begging for a Sly 5 for 11-years. Tho Jak & Daxter are getting a movie, so there's some hope for that series. Hyped (after seeing the leaks) for the next Ratchet tho! But it's also the experimental Sony IP's, that technically aren't platformers that seem to get neglected too. Stuff like MediEvil, which got a remake...then nothing else. And Gravity Rush, which leaves itself open for a 3rd game, despite the ending feeling definitive. But likely won't happen because Sony shut down Japan Studio, tho they are making a movie for that too. And instead defaulting to "realistic, console pushing, movie-level graphics" game every time we turn around. Because they sell WAY better than anything else that has a standout style, which Nintendo's IP's (being the polar opposite) excel at! Not saying realistic games are bad, cuz I enjoy Horizon, Spidey & Uncharted. But when you have so much of that put together, it seems like there isn't much variety in genres. Which is something the PS1, all the way to early PS4, had in spades! With A Hat in Time & SpongeBob: Cosmic Shake fitting right in with! I don't know, to me there appears to be an imbalance between sylized, cartoony games & the cinema-esque type of games from some of the big names in the industry. And I wish it could level out a bit.
Great video, and I agree I really hope some of these larger studios show platformers some love! I am developing my own solo indie game which is a 3D platformer inspired by some of these older titles! Come check it out, it's nowhere near the scale of the titles mentioned, but it's very early days! :D
Didnt super luckys tale not sell well on switch? Also there being no banjo game i blame on xbox for not finding another studio to take a crack at it and in general all of rares ips
Yea i agree its kinda sad other 3d platformer never get a sequel and some developer just leave the series into the dark and make another game like last of us and insomniac spiderman games we just only get 3d platformer from like Nintendo/sega and Indie games only but for others we never get it like naughty dog and insomniac just focusing with they own games other than just bring back with spyro and crash same at namco too they just only focusing a lot of anime games only and never make another 3d platformer games and just only remake the old games

When I think back how people were angry that Mario Bros Wonder was nominated fot GOTY, you definitly have a point.
Jedi Survivor is a 3d platformer too and it was the 9th best selling ge of the year
Sony are being really aggravating by not bringing back sly and jak.
Super Mario Odyssey is an experience I'll never forget, it was peak!

Indie devs really do be our saviors in keeping platformers genre alive beyond the main two of mario and sonic

Either way, Lego's still got it
We need franchises like Rayman, Banjo, and Crash back in the spotlight again!
Mario, crash, and kirby all proove that 3D platformers can still exist and be amazing
ONGOD
It is a pretty sad state that 3D platformers are in when we only have three major AAA platformers, and Kirby only recently got his first 3D platformer. Aside from them, it's pretty much just the indie scene keeping 3D platformers alive and while they provide great games, I wish we didn't have to rely solely on the indies for 3D platformers aside from Nintendo and SEGA.
Man
It really hurts that this genre feels so dead, sure we have these indie games but what about the big ones who were so big back then.
I know man. I WANT THEM TO THRIVE
3D Platformers im most excited about:
- next 3D Mario
- Sonic x Shadow Generations
- Tomba 1+2 remasters
3D Platformers I want to see return:
- Spyro
- Klonoa
- Crash Bandicoot
- Sly Cooper
- Jak & Daxter
- Pacman World 2
and then there's Rayman...

The one thing I hate with big companies is their need to try make everything as big and expensive as possible instead of doing lower sized budget that might have an easier time making a decent profit plus they have to market them better if they want platform
Mets to sell well
The platformmers I want to return the most are
Jak and Daxter
Ratchet
Spyro
Crash
Banjo
Rayman
Kirby: Forgotten Land and Mario Odyssey were PEAK
My most wanted games:
- Spyro 4
- Banjo Threeie
- a new open world donkey kong
- a GOOD open world pokemon game
- Tomba 3
I won't buy the new halo, or cod

Companies don't realise people just want a good 3D platformer to chill out with and have fun, we don't care if it's revolutionary, as long as it's good and not another Sonic Forces or Balan Wonderworld
Mario Odyssey and Kirby & The Forgotten Land are such beloved titles and considered must-haves for the switch, but they aren't revolutionary. They're just really fun games and that's all they need to be.
Man😧
i feel everyone needs to just realize to just play the indies and give them the same level of respect as the big boys if not more, you'll probably get an experience better than what the big studios could provide for a third of the price. yall gotta stop relying on the big studios for your fix and throw the small guys a bone if you really want that genre. especially this year and going forward theres stuff like penny's big breakaway, billie bust up, rollin rascal, the plucky squire, and much more. if you want 2.5D stuff theres doubleshake and restitched. if you dont wanna wait theres a hat in time, demon turf, bomb rush cyberfunk (even if thats a different audience), lunistice, and the toree games.
the genre will only thrive if we stop acting like its dead and embrace what we have. if folks want more 3d platformers and say "no ones gonna play that indie shit" and devaluing them, yall are part of the problem straight up
Nah I agree, we gotta start thriving indies
The only Indie games I don't like are the ones with large followings (this is just a personal problem) but I'm the most interested in Penny's Big Break away .

Has anyone noticed that Sonic The Hedgehog seems to be the only Platformer franchise which people say they've "grown out of"? Why is this?
Cuz they are HATEEERS
@@GamesCage you sure? Some of the people I heard saying that (SPD64 and Stephenknux) seem/seemed like genuine passionate fans
I think the meta era of the franchise was probably the blame for this.
Of course it could be many other reasons that don’t have to do with the meta era, personally I still stuck with the blue blur even through that era and even after forces because Sonic was always one of my favorites, granted I didn’t pay as much attention, but Frontiers really brought me back :)
Hope this answers your question!
@@obd9660 ah yeah makes total sense.
That Intro was actually FIRE!

Platformers in General deserve respect in general because if it weren’t for the first Super Mario Bros which saved the video game industry we may not have any video games at all. I just wish companies besides Nintendo or Sega could go back to making great masterpieces.
MAN
@@GamesCage Also the problem is that Companies are just not listening, no matter how vocal we are.
MHM….
Man
Even in indie games, I feel like a lot of them are going the sandbox collect-a-thon route. A Hat In Time, Yooka-laylee, Clive & Wrench, and so on. That's why I'm looking forward to Penny's Big Breakaway. To put it in Mario terms, it looks less Odyssey and more 3D World.
MHM
Both Klonoa and Pacman sold better than anticipated actually.
good
I hope they continue them :(
@@GamesCage Same, I'm not too worried though they both only just came out within the last 2 years.
Agree. WE NEED MORE
These are some other 3d platformers that appeared in recent years:
Pseudoregalia (movement is some parts similar to Mario 64, and maybe other influences)
Corn Kidz 64 ("Corn Kidz 64: A NEW 64-bit 3D Platformer! - Petronious" 6m40 - 6m54. Petronious describes it as "somewhere in the middle of Banjo Kazooie and Super Mario 64". )
Cavern of Dreams (the dev Bynine Studios for this ever posted in reddit BanjoKazooie)
But yeah, Penny's Big Breakaway OST Balearic Birds is nice.
Man
Thank you man for telling us your thoughts about this situation, to be really honest i never know the platform genre is not fully respected and how much trouble it might have to face, it hurts more to me to know how crash, banjo, rayman isn't really given that much chnace to try and shine to help the genre grow great again maybr likr in the 2000s, anways stay positive there is always a way to a problem.
And they're still going to find some way to downplay Sonic even after Frontiers, we can't afford to be stingy anymore Sonic Mario Kirby and the Indie title they're all we have
GRAAAAHHH
Sad to hear "Cosmic Shake" didn't do well in sales. I really enjoyed it, one of my favorite recent 3d platformers.
😭
Microsoft's bizarre choices confuse me more then Nintendo sometimes, they have all of these IPs at their disposal and almost every single one doesn't get ANYTHING anymore and it pisses me off when I hear how they want to keep buying studios up because they already have so much they dont even use ever but they just let Banjo die and the future of Crash and Spyro are now uncertain. I may not care for every platformer series out there but just seeing very few options left is genuinely depressing when this genre use to thrive for the past few decades.
Give us MORE
It’s crazy how Kirby is out selling sonic
RIGHT???
What you said at the end is exactly my thought. I don’t get why these big publishers feel like sales need to be in the high millions to be considered a success. I don’t understand the whole picture, but it just feels that games are getting so expensive to produce or people at the top of these publishers are taking in too much profit that their expectations just grow to absurd levels. If a niche platformer returns and sells a million with no marketing, that should be celebrated. It’s such a shame that the genre has fallen off in the non-indie scene.
Agreed 😭
5:17 I was eating Taco Bell and that caught me off guard LMAOOOOOOOO
As someone who grew up during the Golden age of 3D gaming, there's something heartbreaking about watching such a beloved gaming medium fade into obscurity.
Mario still makes quality 3D Platformers, but they only come out only other Blue Moon. And Sonic hasn't had a FULLY 3D Platformer since Sonic 06 (Holy crap it's been over 18 years: send help), which is sad😢
Thank goodness for the Indie scene, otherwise I bet people would have forgotten about 3D Platformers

I PRAY
I've pretty much lost hope for a spyro 4, last year was spyros 25th anniversary and he came to ctrumble on the same day as the game awards, if spyro 4 is real then they had the perfect opportunity to announce it but they never did
Geoft Keghley was also in the celebration video for the anniversary
There were also teases years before this like the spyro 4 sign in the crash 4 artbook
If it happens then good, if it doesnt then it doesnt matter
I pray….
I still prefer games like Super Mario Odyssey over Marvel's Spider-Mid or some other cinematic ass bs.
@@pinhe4d321 I do too.

10090% they should definitely have more on there
Not only Banjo, but Conker as well.
If microsoft didn't own the rights to the rare titles we would've seen a bunch of classics being brought back a long time ago. I would personally love to see a new Banjo or even Conker game.
Mhm….
Rayman; I feel like it never got its limelight. Also, there needs to be a line drawn between adventure and platforming.

Oh LMAO
MY BOY FADEL IS BACK!

So we just gonna ignore the next sonic game?
No LOL?
Such an F-in great video, thank you fadel for this, it's these videos that hit hard which makes being subbed that much more sweet. You mentioned my GOAT Rayman, I've been simping for that mofo since I was 6.
why do these gaming corpos hate platformers so much 😭
All we got left from big publishers are mario, sonic, kirby and ratchet, the only one that could potentially stick around is pacman if bamco decides to follow up on the world remake
Toys for Bob first went through the cod mines shortly after crash 4 and now they already being treated like shit after the microsoft buyout
All Crash has is a dead online game nobody cares about instead of a crash 5 like everyone wanted
Spyro is pretty much a crash character at this point and the fans have been staved to the point grasping at straws for the potential of a new game for years
Megaman is back on life support even tho 11 is the best selling game in the franchise, and the battle network collection did really well
Rayman is dead, and only makes appearances outside of his own games
Pretty much all of the playstation platformers are dead outside of ratchet and little big planet and even those dont see them same amount of releases as they used to back in the ps2/3 era
Xbox has no intentions of bringing back banjo even after his comeback in smash
Indies are straight up carrying the genre rn
MAN WHERES MY MEGAMAN 12 GEAAAHHH
I really want a to kao the kangaroo 2022, bueacuse I love that game!
