    Best rooster we ever had was Buddy, our Black Jersey Giant, and boy was he a giant. He was super sweet and gentle with us, but a terror to the foxes, raccoons, opossums, skunks, and other wildlife that were a threat to our chickens. The iridescence of the sunlight off those feathers was gorgeous, too. Then hens were also delightful.

      Awesome!! We had too many roosters that were in the batch of 60 we ordered, and boy was it a pain watching them try and tag team the hens! We have about 3 or 4 total left out of about 17 of the 60! They calmed down a lot now but they aren’t as big as I thought they would be. In my head they were HUGE but they weren’t lol. I love them but the meat isn’t what we were looking for so we just ordered more Cornish cross chickens. So hopefully they will serve us a little bit better

    The roosters are at LEAST 13 pounds & frequently 18 to 22 pounds at maturity,the hens are at LEAST 10 pounds at maturity…which takes at least 18 months to grow their frame & another 6 months to fill out their frames.
    American Standard of Perfection describes this awesome breed of “Gentle Giants”.

    Goat meat tastes just like canned roast beef when you can it. Canning makes it magical. We canned 6 year old frozen caribou and it tasted like canned roast beef too! And goat milk can taste like armpits or the best milk you’ve ever had, depending on 2 things: if you leave the buck near the does and the breed of goat. GO TEAM GOAT!! Oh wait, did I say that already?

So meat wise, other than the legs, they aren’t that great. But eggs, they are freaking awesome!! They lay tons of them and they will bread with your other chickens which makes those eggs a lot bigger! So there are pluses and minuses. I wish you good luck my friend!!

I've had goat meat before & it was fine, except that I knew it was goat going in. 🥺 I think Miss Chrystal & Mr Reeve can vouch for me on why that couldn't be a diet staple in my kitchen! But I've gotta say that baby goats dancing & side hopping with happy butt is something I can't get enough of! The next most entertaining thing for me is to have a flock of chickens or geese RUNNING! I'm glad you included that today. Great video, interesting about your Jersey Giants!! The iridescent feathers are really striking! Good job - waiting for the next video! God bless... take care. 🙏

We opted to go with the American Bresse breed, as they lay nearly as many eggs as a good egg-laying breed, and they have great meaty bodies. I live in Jersey, and the township I’m in doesn’t allow chickens in our yard. However the township I’m moving to, they do allow chickens. And I have always wanted chickens!!! But when you’re born and bred in Philly it’s kinda hard!!! So we have a decent shed, my husband is in construction and he’s watched a couple videos, he’s confident he can turn the one shed into a very nice coop, as well as making a run for it. For him he feels he could do it in a day, bc the shed may have even been used for that in fact. The sellers are already out, so it’s not like I’ll be meeting them to ask since they’re now out of state, but we will make it work. Or buy a bigger shed. I seem to like using a shed over a coop. I feel like you can make it more your own that way.
    I’m just not really where to start when it comes to GETTING the chickens in NJ!

    • @thetinyraptorfarm9649
      @thetinyraptorfarm9649  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well first off, get only a few hens and a rooster if possible. Check the eggs every day and make sure the are fed and watered twice a day unless you have enough property the can free range. Whatever you do, do NOT get feed from tractor supply! We are learning the hard way dispite warnings from other farmers, that their feed will make them stop lay. Find an organic farmer like ommish people who sale feed. It will be all natural and tons better all around for them. So, after you get used to those chickens, gradually add more and even do research on incubating your own eggs. Hope that helps!!

    Goat meat is tasty. Even dairy goat males are good for roasting, but must be castrated right away and raised as a wether. Do not leave a trace of goat's hair on the carcass when processing and then freeze the cuts immediately. Delicious meat and milk depends on how the goats are raised, fed, and processed. Just be clean. Loved your raptors running after you! Mine are just like that. I have Delawares and Buff Brahma chickens for meat. Both hens can go broody and raise chicks for me with the Delaware hens being the best moms. Had some accidental crosses, Buff Brahma roosters on Delaware hens this spring. The cross was happily a good thing, and the resulting meat is excellent. The roosters grew faster and took on the Delaware color, feathered legs and about thirty percent larger than the parent roosters! I may add white Jersey Giants to my flock this coming spring.

      @@thetinyraptorfarm9649 You are wise to consider a well-rounded meat source, for sure. Diversity on the farm insures survival (and pleasure!), and gives the animals we care for a purpose and opportunity to exist in a world where certain breeds are disappearing at an alarming rate. My goal is to raise poultry for eggs and meat using hay and pasture, with some whole grain I grow or my neighboring ranchers can provide and birds that thrive on this type of diet. Heritage breeds all the way! My fields provide pastures and hay for grass-fed cattle and chickens at present and it is working out pretty well. • @waywardstrays
    @waywardstrays 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I used to raise goats for meat and milk and I can tell you that flavor is dictated by their diet. Beyond that just process young enough and fix males/ don’t have them around mature males. Mature male goats (bucks) stink and that smell permeates the meat and milk of all the goats around them. If you decide to try out goats I strongly suggest getting something in the mid sized range as far as breeds because they are less destructive to fences.

    Just found your video. I have 4 black Jersey Giants that I'm brooding in the garage right now. I have my coop nearly finished, but I haven't installed the door in it yet. I bought an automatic door. So you think it's big enough for the Giants to use? It's not too late to send it back. Thanks in advance!

      Awesome and welcome brother! How big is the coop? It should be fine. Mine is 24x24ft and have 88 total chickens and it’s plenty.

      @@thetinyraptorfarm9649Thanks! The coop itself is 4x8, with a 12x16 enclosed run. I plan to let them graze around the run most of the time. I'm looking to house a dozen or so chickens. I talked myself out of a small auto door and just bought an actuator and controller so I can make the door to my liking.

      @@jeremymcjunkin8954 oh that’s perfect! Also plenty of room for them to roam around when you can’t let them run. I made a video, I think it was a short about putting a compost pile in the coop and when you have scraps, throw them on it and when you put them up for the night, throw the feed on it so they can stir it and poop in it. Hope that helps!

      We’ve thought about it actually. But we have a final decision on weather we really want the jersey giant. They are fully mature and they literally have a tiny bit more meat than our egg layers. It’s just not worth it to us anymore and will be going a different direction. May give those brohmas a try! Thanks for the comment!!

      If your “Giants are not at least 13 pounds at two years old,maturity,then you do NOT have purebred REAL JERSEY Giants.
      American Standard of Perfection is the “go to” for describing this chicken breed.
      18 pounds + is normal for cockerels,11 pounds + for pullets.
      If they don’t have yellow soled feet & yellow skin,and significant width,length,height…they are NOT real Jersey Giants!
      Hatchery birds are not bred to Standard & seldom if ever approach the description of a real Jersey Giant…& will forever be doomed to disappoint .
