Tar can be produced pretty easily; you dig a ditch, line it to the brim with pieces of birch, set the wood on fire, then cover the ditch in soil so it burns with less oxygen; pop a hole on the side of the ditch and the tar dribbles out.
You leave a single air hole into the ditch. This was how Finns produced tar in the old days. Also; soil. Not dirt. Soil doesn't suffocate the flames as much as sand.
That bit with the suicidal pries guys makes me think the makers of this movie saw that scene from Conan the Barbarian, where thulsa Dum has one of his followers walk off a cliff to show his power over people, but didn't get WHY that scene was important or powerful.
I unironically and unashamedly enjoy the Yor: Hunter from the Future theme. I also think that montage-wise it fits Spoony's Beastmaster sequence even better than it's original source.
Bragging Avatar is my favorite character. (and the big black tiger nose-to-nose with the little ferret has to be the cutest thing I've seen in a while... d'aw. I'm sure it was the picture they went with on the promotional poster :D)
5:00 I think this dude is trying to rip-off Thulsa Doom's gimmick of having an underling commit suicide to prove his power over them. This guy forgot that you need to do that when you AREN'T already outnumbered!
Well....that and he needs to let go of his sacrifice fetish. Every other scene he's just dying to sacrifice somebody. New drinking- watch Beastmaster and take a shot everytime Rip Torn brings up a sacrifice. Mayax is obsessed......with appeasing....."R" or....Ar or whatever you call that infernal god. I'll say this: "R" must be pretty badass to get a zealot like Mayax. We've seen how powerful Q is and how much of a headache he is to Picard. Imagine what "R" could do. =D Still this movie's a guilty pleasure and an old favorite of mine. Can't say how many times I've imagined what it would be like to lead an army of beasts and destroy tyrants, whacking off heads and banging warrior women. Of course, Tanya Roberts isn't my cousin in my fantasies so it's all cool.....and I have a pair of pants.....

Also, technically panther is an incorrect name for a melanistic leopard. Any cat can be born melanistic (a completely black fur coat) or leucistic (completely white but not albino) despite what their parents look like, so it's not out of the realm of possibility to have a black tiger. But Wag Man is right, the tiger they used was dyed black and ended up dying.

Honestly, you don't need a huge complex story to make the movie a good one. A simple story is good enough for me as long as it is executed properly.
