    Honda is a company that likes to impress with its engineering. It frequently succeeds too. Many remember the original Insight from 1999 and its feisty little duel with Toyota 's Prius for supremacy in the fledgling hybrid market. The Prius went on to sell millions and the weird little Honda became a bit of a collector's car. Then Honda did something that was very un-Honda. They followed rather than led and the second generation Insight could well have been a Prius in Honda clothing. Sales were pretty good this time round but does a second generation Insight make an insightful used purchase? We run the rule over the Honda hybrid here.

    Hi from Australia. Have owned a 2nd ,3rd and 4th generation Prius (still have the 4th generation)a base model CRZ( picking up a top spec 2014 CRZ next week) and have just sold a Mazda 3 skyactiv x mild hybrid. Have also driven original1st generation Insight and Prius. Between them all, one set of tyres and a 12 volt battery. None required anything beyond normal servicing, no head gasket issues, no brake pads needed. Nothing broke. Keep to the oil change schedule of 10000 kilometres/6 months and ensure transmission fluid change of 6 years/ 100000 kilometre on the Toyotas on any and all models with cvt or torque converter. Honda need 40000/ 4 year transmission fluid change. Don’t know the current standard. But no such thing as lifetime fluid. Roadside assistance services found the Prius high voltage battery lasted about 10-12 years. So if you can get to that with no more than regular servicing and transmission fluid at the required intervals then if your high voltage battery needs replacing you have had a good run. None of my cars have required water pumps, a/c compressors, no starter motors to replace on hybrids, no serpentine belts to replace. They are well engineered. Also keep the cooling vents clean and open to prevent battery overheating. Maintain tyre pressure don’t be lazy. My current Prius does 62-64 mpg and has been as high as 68 mpg. Only problem is we not officially getting the new 5th generation Prius. Lack of use is as bad as abuse of these cars. Should do at least 5000 kilometres at a minimum. Cheers.

    I have been driving my Honda insight Mark 1 for 14 years so far. Replaced tyres once and the hybrid battery pack once. I be driving it for many years to come.
    Now, if you wish to drive AND you care for the environment...
    STOP BUYING NEW CARS ALL THE DAMN TIME!

    Richard Archer you're relying on engine braking in your regular driving. This is exactly what you do when driving a hybrid. The braking force is taken through the electric motor which becomes a generator putting electricity back into the batteries. This also happens when you lift your foot off the gas and coast. It's for this reason that discs and pads on hybrid cars can last 100k miles as drivers rely on them less.

    My Honda Insight 2009 gets 20 kilometres per 1 litre all day long ( 56 British miles per gallon ), and occasionally, it gets up to 24 kilometres per litre. 😊
    I never use the green Econ button . It doesn't seem to make a difference to fuel economy in my view.

    I'm considering buying one of these. Surprised he called the first Insight ugly. I thought it looked dead cool, as does this version. I'm confused about this business of the batteries charging when braking. The way I drive I try not to use my brakes, I slow down for junctions and corners instead of keeping the speed up and then braking at the last minute like I see most people driving. Of course I do need to use them, but not as much as most people. So does that mean my batteries won't get charged up or is he referring to when using engine braking?

      The Insights charges the batteries using the electric motor when coasting/slowing down. When the brake padel is pressed, the charging is increased but the mechanical brakes are used as well. They last a very long time though. My first brake pad change was after 150.000 km.

      I can see that the batteries can be charged via engine braking but how do they get charged from wheel braking? What mechanism changes wheel braking into charge?@@qnaap

    • @qnaap
      @qnaap 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      None at all. The only thing that charges the hybrid battery is the hybrid motor. The IMA system determines how much and when to charge. It charges during driving (unnoticeable) and when you release the gas padel. When pressing the brake pedal, it will recharge more to assist in braking. This way, the car feels very natural like a regular car. You can ‘trick’ the car a bit by pressing the brake pedal very softly but still engage the hard regeneration. It will not be as noticeable as an EV of course, because it’s a relatively small motor.

    Interesting to hear this old perspective with future knowledge ...
    Hydrogen fuel has been near forgotten for the push for fire-hazard Li-Ion EVs. (EVs are great, Li-Ion has done well in mild hybrids for years; the idiots making (EVs) aren't being safe enough)
    The Clarity became a Plug-In Hybrid with a 7 gallon gasoline tank.

    I have an opportunity to purchase a 2010 EX w/245k miles. We'll documented repairs and services. One family owned and most all major repairs completed. Aside from the troublesome Honda paint problem on the hood. The interior is in fantastic shape and everything functioning accordingly. The biggest issue are the extremely rusted out bottom rocker panels, is there an inexpensive solution for this? The asking price from the owner is $1,100. A bargain in my opinion, but would love to hear others! TIA

      I have owned many toyotas and hondas. Toyotas keep running. Hondas transmission tend to go bad and window regulators tend to go bad. Wonder if this ca’s transmission is reliable.
