High Spirits Pocket flutes in G are the only flutes I play. Whether I’m recording at home or performing live. Playability, durability and affordability, you just can’t go wrong with a High Spirits Pocket flute in G.
Finally got around to watching the video. Sweet flutes. The new, "larger" size of Odell's pocket flutes also seem to sweeten the tone. Thanks for sharing!
I have the same 5-hole High Spirit flute that you briefly show. The block on mine broke in the exact same way. But it doesn't affect the sound in anyway and it's still a nice little flute. I guess a pocket flute needs a sturdier block design.
Just now got a chance to watch, was at a flute circle when it premiered. Sorry Jonny, but my flute circles win out ;) I've been looking to get some higher pitched flutes like that, thanks for this. I really like the look and sound of Brad Youngs flutes, he has some beauties on his page. I like the newer designs on the High Spirits pocket flutes, and the fetish isn't glued down on the G now, so you can get that little bit of adjustment.
Johnny, a big fan here. Would you please show us how to play bird calls on these pocket flutes. I like the Brad Young, and the HS, but would love to find high A in a pocket flute.
Would you consider an expanded video with just the Little Crow and High Spirit? I'm rather interested in them, but concerned they may be too shrill. A video featuring their full range and unenhanced sound would be helpful in making a decision. And do NFA flutes overblow to a second octave as a penny whistle does? Thanks.
10:30...what time zone? I'm assuming CST where Jonny is. Might be a good idea list that though. 10:30 CST Apparently, this TH-cam format automatically defaults to the viewers time zone. I must be overthinking this. Typical of me. : ))
Thanks for watching! Much appreciated! You should contact the maker of your flute for the best advice. There are many different finishes for the outside of flutes. Usually a flute paste wax made specifically for flutes is fine for the outside. The inside is specific to the maker and some flutes need no care on the inside other than keeping the SAC clean of residues from your breath that build up over time.
Try moving the totem more forward toward the splitting edge. Then try reducing your breath. Some flutes require no more than a breath versus a blow to play their best.
Are you supposed to be able to see through to the other side of the flute? I just had a G minor pocket flute arrive, and I've never played a flute before, but I can't get any sound to come out? If I look in the hole I can't see through to the other end, is this normal or did they make this thing wrong?
No. Native American Style Flutes are not made with a single bore. There is one at each end. The air travels through the moutpiece side (slow air chamber) up the ramp outside of the flute through the flue, which is under the block (totem, bird, fetish, etc.) and back down into the sound chamber. It is possible that the block has shifted during shipping. I would check with the flute maker for their suggested block position, since it is slightly different for each.
We are in Iowa, USA. I don't deal much with international shipping but if you are interested in a particular flute that I have reviewed, many of the makers do ship internationally.

It might be cool to show us how to do some bird calls with them
I would really like to hear how to play them as well.

Wish I could join you live, but I've got two classes I'm leading that morning. I'll catch the replay, though!

Well, this is a new thing! 😀
Are these tiny flutes tuned to precise pitches so i could use it with any other 440hz instruments? Thnx ❤
Yes most are, although it depends on the skill of the flute maker.

Pocket flutes make your fingers dance.
