This is very informative, thanks! One observation: I believe it's carte de visite (vih-ZEET)

Very nice! I run into similar situations as the examples you gave often. Do you know of any online resources that lists obvious things (mainly fashion and technology) that preclude a photo from having been taken earlier than a certain date?
For example, I ran into a photo posted today that claimed to be of a man who died in 1855, but several of the men in the photo were wearing long neckties (and mass-produced suits). I've read several articles that state those kinds of ties weren't worn in America until after about 1865, and weren't common until even later. But I'm just some guy on the Internet editing FamilySearch. Somebody who is emotionally invested in believing that photo is of *that* person probably won't take my word for it. It'd be great to have an objective reference that we could share. The articles I've found are a bit too wishy-washy and only cover one or two examples, and trying to determine the photo technology used in a low-res photo that's been scanned, edited and posted online often isn't really possible.
I'm also thinking about all the stuff I don't know I could be looking for, like certain inventions -- light bulbs, radios, building materials, or the earliest we'd see a casual photo at the beach or somebody walking down the street. Anyway, thanks!

That cleared up a lot of questions I've had. Very helpful.

Very cool and interesting, if you’re a old history buff like i am..
