    It's really amazing how violent microbursts can be and how quickly they can go from rainstorm to raging hurricane! It's a good thing they only last a few moments.

      AZ over CA or FLA any day

    • @cz180p
      @cz180p 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AZDC99 eh, I don’t agree with that. The storms in Florida are pretty tame compared to microbursts in AZ. Besides hurricanes of course. Plus Phoenix feels earthquakes from basically every surrounding state.

    Microbursts can be deadly like a tornado or hurricane. My neighborhood and a few other nearby neighborhoods were experiencing 100 mph wind gusts, and just 2 miles away there wasn’t any damage at all. Microbursts are 2.5 miles or less in diameter.

      I got to watch one from my dad's house in Desert Hot Springs. NE corner of town, up the hill about 1,000 feet above the valley floor, looking across to Palm Springs. When the rain bomb hit the ground everything south of DHS proper disappeared. Just this gray sheet of water and plenty of lightning. Perfectly calm where we were, and just a mile south on Palm Drive it was like this video. And yes, it was in August of 2005. 116° out, temp dropped about 30° when that microburst hit.

    In 1978 I was caught in a microburst in Custer’s State Park. We were at one of the highest areas of the park and had just got in our big Ford Torino when the storm hit. The car was pummeled by hailstones and we thought the car was going to flip over. And then it was gone. As quickly as it started. When we drove back through town, we saw that a semi truck trailer had been pushed into the window of a restaurant.

    The term ‘microburst’ is puzzling. There is nothing ‘micro’ about this phenomenon. Why do they last so long if they are just a temporary downdraft of cold air? They seem to be driven by a long-lasting mechanism with sustained effects.

    • @briane173
      @briane173 ปีที่แล้ว

      The term "microburst" is used because its effects are so localized. Most of these microbursts are barely a mile wide; it's just the outflow from them that makes it so intense on the ground. Pour water from a bottle onto the ground and you see how fast and how far the water spreads outward when it hits the ground, all from a column of water barely a quarter inch in diameter. Same concept.

      A microburst is totally different, trust me. Just experienced my third this year on the south coast. The sound of the wind is like being in a hurricane which I’ve been in previously. It just drops on you. Like being at full spin inside a washing machine, going in all directions. Terrifying noise, we got 2 inches of rain in 5 minutes, plus hail.
      And I used to live in Glasgow, and in their wettest winter on record lol, so trust me, I can tell the difference. Sadly got outside so had no chance to video.
