What most people/fans may not realise is that Angus was actually a classically trained stage actor before transitioning to screen.
It goes a long way to explaining why he was such a presence on screen with such little effort, he was immensely talented.

I think that is one of the most underrated shots in cinematic history.. .in regards to horror flicks anyhow. I saw phantasm in the theaters as a ten year old. There are so many things to admire about the visuals in this scene. One such visual that doesnt get discussed but deserves mention is how clueless and carefree Reggie is here. He has no idea the man who will haunt him for the rest of his life is right there behind him. Also us viewers were equally clueless how Reggie the ice cream seller would transition into a badass crusader with shotgun and chainsaw in the future.

Actually makes sense this is a boy being chased by death is so cold and waiting. they would ruined the idea as there is a deleted scene, that shows the Tall Man is afraid of the cold because he is from a hot planet, thanks to the director Don he left the idea out.
There is a rare version that a fan put all the deleted scenes back to the movie.
It is a surreal nightmare, he is the only one alive from his family and he's playing a game with the Tall Man until the end, unintentionally or not this is a great movie, difficult to interpret, more you watch more you find meanings.

Actually even without the scene it did incorporate the cold weakness. Him walking down the street was more or less an effort to maintain his cover as a local mortician. He didn't have to socialize, but he had to at least act like he was familiar with the town to take a stroll down there. He sees Mike here, and the look on his face when he sees him, gave me the impression he was gonna walk across the street and grab him, but then he realized he was in a cold spot with that ice cream truck. The whole scene is similar to the 1931 Dracula scene where Van Helsing confronts Dracula after knowing full well he's a Vampire. Both characters were stopped by mundane yet powerful items a cross and a freezer respectfully.

This scene was actually cut from the original film and used as a wraparound for the end of Phantasm 4. There were several scenes not used in the original film that ended up as flashback scenes in the sequels. Pure genius using up those old scenes in this way

This movie is so surreal and dreamlike. As someone who loves those sequels i honestly still think this one is absolutely the best by far. Every single scene of this movie feels like it could just be a dream, which is why the ending catches you off guard. Those sequels feel a little more straightforward about what's real and what isn't, Phantasm III dives into more weird surreal shit but that second movie has it's feet more firmly set on reality with most of the weird sci fi stuff going to the side. I haven't seen 4 or 5 but i plan to this weekend.

the 1st part fo the scent where he is walking with very long strides was creepy enough. Then the straight on shot with reggie in the picture in the cold mist coming from the truck... oh man. The tall mans walking became irregular.... out of stride and his arms were swinging out of sync with his steps was a master touch to the scene.

This movie came out when I was 9-years old and remember having to see it on TV because my parents and my cousin's parents did not want us to see it. Ironically, my aunt, that cousin's mom, couldn't resist and watched it with us at 9pm when it played on TV and recall she was more scared than us and looking back, she added to the suspense as she couldn't watch, but she couldn't look away, LoL. I always remembered this scene, though and despite the years (I'm 53 now) it still grips me as the combo of the music, the Tall Man's gait and the tone still disturbs me. That's how you know you made a good movie when you remember these kind of details.

This scene was eerie and creepy as hell when I first saw it 28 years ago, and after watching it again today I get the same chills I felt then. It's amazing how a simple scene like this manages to scare the audience today just as much as it did in the 70's. There was supposed to be a scene somewhere in this film which explains that the Tall Man is intolerant to cold temperatures, hence his reaction to being near Reggie's ice cream cooler. It coincides with the detail that it's very hot in his home world. Unless the viewer pieces it together themselves, that detail never quite makes it into the first film but is used as the basis for their plan to try and destroy him at the end of Phantasm III. Since there was about twice as much material shot for the first film than what was actually used, they had a lot of leftover ideas and extra scenes they could add to the subsequent movies to flesh out the lore.

If Tall man doesnt like the cold why is he inhaling the cold vapours as if he is relishing it? Also in Phantasm 5 , in other dimension the girl Reggie met on the highway had different name while for rest of the characters the name dont change.
Im sure the directors after making the first film didnt expect it to reach such cult status. So they made it a franchise themselves wondering how to make more sense of this movie while still leaving everyone confused till the very last installment, in the name of making people think about it forever.
    And still …. I love Phantasm! 😄

1:02 that is just the scariest walk ever right there. How does he do that?! Try and walk with your arms moving out of sync with your legs and at a different pace than your legs. It’s nearly impossible! He had to have practiced that in order to do that. This simple weird walking scene made this movie 10 times scarier than it would have been otherwise.

Visually, there's an interesting contrast between the strength, certainty and direction of an adult man and the wanderings/uncertainty of an adolescent boy.

Cold is deadly for him. And he just stopped to ... enjoy it !? Same if Superman stopped to enjoy kryptonite. Can you imagine that? Tall Man is a one of biggest badasses ( in every way) I've ever saw.

That explanation/weakness wasn't invented yet, so I don't think it's like that. What I think he's supposed to be doing is intimidation, doing something that is clearly unnatural to Mike, but would look natural to other people. To others it'd probably just look like a guy enjoying the smell of ice cream, but Mike knows he's looking right at him.

What i like the most on that scene is the fact this is a double meaning interpretation. You can understand the first you saw the Tall Man stop his walk because he knows Mike look at him and man to scare him. But the second time (when you saw the third one) you understood he just hate freezing and react about Reggie open the ice cream door. So much good!

My favorite scene, just to have Angus Scrimm swagger in so that he can enjoy some ice cream smells (that or he just really liked Reggie's cologne that day). 🤓😆🤓😆🤓😆

I watched this movie for the first time a few months ago and I really was not a fan of it. I sat there after it was over for 10+ minutes confused at what I had just witnessed, but this one scene stuck with me, I couldnt stop thinking about this scene and my strange love for it. I found myself literally deciding to watch the movie a second time the next day just because of that one scene and upon that second watch I fell in love with the movie. It was like I still thought it was a bad movie and yet something about it all forced me to love it. This is one of the greatest scenes in horror movie history.

I saw this when I was about the same age as young Mike, and as my name is also Mike I was literally paralyzed with fear. This scene and the bug in the hair haunted my entire childhood. I used to do that same thing with the payphone btw, good add on that was a sign of young adulthood at the time.

I honestly thought this was Mike and Tall Man's Dracula moment. In the 1931 movie, Van Helsing confronts Dracula in a battle of wills. With Drake trying to hypnotize him only for it to have no effect on Abraham. Then when he decided to just kill him physically, Dracula approached Van Helsing only for Van Helsing to pull out a cross and send him fleeing.
Phantasm, basically the same situation. Tall Man notices Mike, was about to cross the street and kill him, only to be stopped by a cross in the form of the cold air of Reggie's Ice Cream truck.

It made no sense because they deleted all the scenes that pieced everything together perfectly. When I had the opportunity to see the deleted scenes, I was baffled as to why they would take them out in the 1st place...but then again if the finished product made TOO much sense, maybe it wouldn't be the classic it became known for. And a side note: this was the only in the series I truly enjoyed.
