They make more. Let's say it costs 1k to mine the ounce. Would they want to sell that ounce for $1400 or $3k? The answer is 3k. The leverage can be crazy too. Let's say there is 100 million ounces mined. The price goes up $1. That's 100 million more dollars made on a $1 increase. Now imagine a significant increase in the price..
