Gave my LDR GF a $700-900 per month budget for rent and she found a nice, modest place within walking distance of the beach where I can snorkel for about $307 per month. She is scared to death of spending too much money and always says everything is expensive. I think I may be a lucky guy.

That sounds like a great set up! And pretty awesome that you told her what the max budget was to help you find a place and she came up with something so much cheaper and also a great place at the same time! You definitely found a good one

Dude, that is almost my monthly budget for my family of five. However, you neglected to say if you gave that amount or she suggested that amount. If you are making minimum wage in the Philippines it is 570 pesos per day. At current exchange rate that is around 10 dollars a day. Most folks do not do that. They are fortunate to find work. If and when you get to phils, make a resolution to yourself..... no spending except for essentials for the first 6 months. No motorbike, car, trips, ya ya etc... just observe and see how things are..... you will make a lot less errors.... You have to learn and understand a whole new economic reality. Don't bring the US here.

Wow almost $900 USD a month? You're also long distance too and not around her. For all you know a portion could be going to her jobless brother. You getting taken to the cleaners. She will ask for more money soon

The best option is to be as far as possible from the family - if you don't find an orphan! Having lived in various parts of the Philippines, I found that the remote provinces are nice places to visit, but too isolating and under-serviced for long-term. I don't like the big cities either, as they're too dirty, polluted, noisy and busy. Smaller cities such as Iloilo, Ormoc, Puerto Princesa, Surigao, Loag, Dumaguete and Baguio are better. There's more to do, better shopping and more options for meeting people. If you're in the Province, you'll be limited in your options, and you'll be at the mercy of your gf and her family, which may not be what you want, particularly long-term or if things don't work out. Nice places to visit - wouldn't want to live there.

My experience says you are spot on. Province life is cheap and entertaining, but not permanently, and supporting a whole village gets tiring as well. It's not just money, it's energy expended with helping the less educated and fortunate learn something.

Let’s not forget that the vast majority of girls that you meet on online dating apps like Tinder, in Manila don’t come from Manila, they come from the province. It’s like the great migration of the wildebeest. One minute they’re working in Manila, a week later, you contact them and they’re back in their “hometown” in the province. Not all province girls sit around holding hands all day singing Kumbaya and are as pure the driven snow. They all have smart phones and access to the Internet and the airport. Just sayin

IMHO it's best for the new expat to live in a metro area to start your journey here. It takes 1-2 years before you can really settle in and understand how most things truly work and also figure out what you desire in retirement. For me life in the mountains is the best. No close neighbors, big land and home, great views and for the most part very peaceful and quiet. But it's best if you live away from the city to have solar power, a generator, collect rainwater and have Starlink. Also living far from the city means heading to town once a week for shopping so you will need a car or truck. The great thing is we all are different and seek our own adventure here. You will adapt and this place will change you after several years of living here. The toilet paper deal is kinda funny, trust me guys there is a much better way.

depends on your age and health, the hospitals in the provinces are scary,,,,I know 3 guys who lived in the province and had health emergency, they were scared to death. One was put in a hallway of a dirty hospital, he was having a minor heart attack. His gf messaged me for money to pay , he is now back in the USA for surgery. The other guy had a motorcycle accident, of course he hit a dog that ran in the road. He made it to cebu city, he is recovering then back to USA for better surgery. goodluck

Riding a bike …it’s just downright dangerous. I was gonna get one ..always wanted a Ducati ..but after years living here..ya know..no..way too dangerous. From animals and kids running into the roads ..poor roads ..no lighting at night, to the extreme. We were travelling back from Bataan…only a really quite major road doing 80kph…then car swerves in front ..I anticipate and there in the middle of the highway is a naked guy crouched in the middle…like what the f***.

Cebu has become so crowded and expensive. My wife is from cebu and we been discussing moving to Leyte to get away from Cebu . When I moved to Cebu in 2010 it was not bad and enjoyed it. But now it's just crazy with the traffic. It's a headache going anywhere in Cebu and even worse if you trying to or from lapulapu. Everytime we travel to Leyte it's so relaxing and cheaper also no traffic .

Chad thanks for the broad perspectives you are experiencing and sharing by traveling yourself to all these places. First hand viewpoints are the most helpful and seems most vlogers have already settled in one spot. Its hard to sort out what place checks the most boxes for personal preference. But you gave several pro/cons to narrow down what fits us. Have been to Negros, Dauin but not Leyte or Luzon so helps me target places to check out. Thanks John
PS- would be really helpful to show a reference map of all the cities you mention for those of us less familiar w the Phils islands & towns. I k its more editing but I find myself having to map them myself and get the spelling right to even do that😂.

Cities, no thank you :) If I wanted to live in the Ph, I think learning enough of the local languge to communicate would be high on my list. When it come to the actual place foreigners settle, I feel your comment about finding a girlfriend and end up staying where she are is often the case.

Since everyone there shares the three "Red Tables" I pulled up with him and we chatted. He told me, Tom, there's just 4 rules to a happy retirement here. Rule #1, NEVER open a business here, of any kind. You WILL lose your money. Rule #2, NEVER buy a house or lot. It's her's not your's and you WILL lose your money. Rule #3, NEVER get really married. There is no divorce and you WILL lose your money. and Rule #4, NEVER live on the same island, or anywhere with a days bus ride, of HER family. They will bleed you dry.
