I was there in the fall of 1972 when the dairy first opened and cows were moved from the old barn to the Waterman complex. I believe there were only 2 silos at that time. Really sad to see it go, but change is inevitable. Time marches on. We sold our cows this Oct.

I imagine the permit and cost is really expensive for explosives when dealing with state owned jobs... I do house demolition around campus and the red tape is thick!!

they don't use them anymore, only big dairy farms now and then don't use silos such as these. Silos are sitting empty allover the country. It is grain farming now. It is sad to see them being torn down.
It's concrete. Cement is an additive. And it takes both the concrete and the steel to have the strength. Concrete is good in compression and steel is good in tension. Neither is good without the other. it came down because the operator took out the concrete.
To : osudairy, I alway's wanted to know how they take them down , I got the chance to see it in person on a abandoned farm and they also torn down a couple Barnes with very old farm tractors from the 40's ? But I really enjoyed watching the silo come down, and the old farm property was going to be a Children's Medical Center and have a CMC MEDEVAC for New Jersey? And it was great to watch them come down & they had 3 silos just like this osudairy...
Much respect to the engineers and construction workers that built that silo.
I continue to be amazed at the different approaches companies take at trying to knock down these things.

I would never guess that this was a good way to remove a silo.
A demo team from the Army would have enjoyed using it for practice.

Think I would have kept the bucket on the machine, would have been quieter at least.
No bucket means more weight in the ball
No what I meant was, keep the bucket to use to push the teeth through the concrete blocks. Much more precise and quicker, and quieter.
The first two are not stave silos, they are slip poured, meaning it is all one piece of concrete. Hence the reason for the wrecking ball.
