I'm a Workaway volunteer in Charlottesville, VA, and I'm supposed to build one of these. I'll tell you in a month how everything went! Thank you for your help :)
So informative, thank you! I’d been reading about them ahead of trying to make one and I love the quote from the permaculture man who said “if it’s far enough away from your house that you’d get your fluffy slippers wet, it’s too far!”
We used our house as an herb spiral, with each plant on the side where it does best: chives, garlic, mint, horseradish, rhubarb, strawberries, etc. The plants are stable in their positions and never need tending, except for harvesting.
Job well done Tanya and a great project idea. Keep safe and well and doing those videos. They give us suggestions that we can implement in our own allotments/gardens.
Most herbs are easy to grow and make a nice addition to an omelette or pizza for example. The herb spiral will give good drainage also. Love the new look with the lipstick also!
So beautiful! Just discovered your channel about a month ago and I love that you share very specific insights and ideas. I’m in Florida, USA, so my climate is very hot, and since I’m fairly new to gardening you help me stay inspired while I try to figure it all out.
Thanks for this. I just subscribed. I think I want to do this for the annual herbs like basil and dill. I have a major love for basil. And the rabbits don’t bother it. I want to plant some dill at the top so they are protected. Now I know how to build it. Now I will binge watch your videos. ☮️💕
My garden is at down hill land coz I am living at mountains area. Todo gardening I have to level the surface... still I love doing it. Stared last year October!!! Love your beautiful garden
So pretty and I love that it actually has a good function as well! I'm planning my backyard this summer and already have my herb-spiral layed out. So this was good timing, since I haven't got to search for info jet. I hope to build it soon, thanks!
Several years ago I saw one in a permaculture yard on a home garden tour - love the idea! Herbs have always grown well for me, in our dry summer clay soul (Western Oregon) ... One I have from a friend is Clinopodium nepeta - tastes similar to marjoram, but a blend of flavors ... She grew hers from seed, and shared after it multiplied, I love it!!
Happy Wednesday! Thanks for sharing this video! I am actually already in the process of clearing out a section in my backyard garden here in Florida to build one of these. I hope mine turns out as nice as yours! :)
Happy planting and I hope the design tips help - it’s important to position it just so and get the height and width just right. It will likely be different for every garden.
Hi Tanya! What a marvelous idea especially for a compact kitchen garden. I would suggest however for those who live in areas susceptible to ground frost in the winter to build the spiral on a bed of 6" to 12" of crush stone to help minimize the effects of frost heaving up on the spiral. This will not completely eliminate frost heaving, but it does do wonders just the same.
@@Lovelygreens I have not build a spiral Tanya, but as pretty severe winters are a way of life here in Upstate New York I've gotten into the habit of layering crushed stone under other outdoor projects to help guard against any frost heave damage.
I love this idea; it looks beautiful, rustic and super easy access. My plan was to redo my heb garden this spring. I live in New Hampshire USA, my herb garden is about 8 x 6 foot, its on the southside of my home close to the back door and with our short growing season I was trying to figure a way to plant more herbs w/o having to create a whole new bed. This would be a great solution for that! Thank you. Im very new to your channel but am loving it already. have a great day :)
Love this so much! I'll definitely be looking at putting one in, unfortunately the best spot for it is on a steep slope at my house, so I'll have to come up with a creative solution for that, or have it somewhere not as convenient. 😢
I’m trying a load of new herbs this year from seed, including Lime Basil, Orange Thyme, and Korean Mint. I’ve also managed to grow some Dill, but have learnt that I must not plant it near my Fennel as it will cross pollinate. Apparently Sage and Onions hate each other... which is odd at how well they go together in stuffing! Love the video, and I’m trying to think where I could build something similar in my garden now. 🤣
There seems to be a lot of gardening sources saying that dill and fennel cross-pollinate, but zero evidence. If you find a reputable source that claims to have a fennel-dill hybrid I’d be interested to see it. I also have Korean mint on the go at the moment. The seedlings are still very small but I have high hopes :)
Hi Tanya a little off topic here but I kept looking at your climbing roses which are growing so much faster than mine. I was trying to see what you used to secure your vines to your lovely trellis. Thnx
I wind them around the arbor but also use hessian string to secure them. I’ve also just pruned out a lot of new growth at the bottom. I want the existing stems to grow taller, rather than the plant divert more energy to new stems.
No need - the design and soil keep them in their position. I've moved since I built this feature and was then able to dig up the plants, deconstruct the herb spiral and bring it to the new house :)
You rock Tanya! I love this! Can you tell me where it originated? Did you say in the Mediterranean? Thank you for your video! Always informative and lovely!🤗
What a nice idea, but what about rain? Wouldn't mortar be a reasonal nessesity to prevent slithering? Another question is: Doesn't rain make a small lavina or and make you lower herbs dirty from the soil compost from op top?
I wish I had a garden to do this! I know this has nothing to do with this video but I was wondering how do you feel about carnivore plants? Do you have any?
Our herb spirals are almost exactly the same! I made mine a month or so ago, but looks just like yours. How coincidental..!? I did put spearmint and orange mint in mine tho, but plan to keep it under control. I made the center ( where the mint is) completely surrounded by bricks. Then the spiral continues around that tall center. Mine also sits on a concrete slab so the roots cannot spread into the ground.
If you plant two types of mint together their specific flavors will be compromised. The roots entwine and influence each other. I’d take them out as soon as possible and put them in their own pots.
If you're in the northern hemisphere (north of the equator) then the sun sits in the south. If you're below the equator (southern hemisphere), the sun sits in the north.
Thanks for the tips, really want to try this in my garden! If you ever get a chance it would be amazing if you checked out my small vegetable garden in the UK! Have a great day everyone and liked from me! 78!
The shape is not just aesthetic -- it serves a major purpose in creating microclimates for different types of herbs. Without it, you won't be able to grow so many herbs in a small space successfully
Just rewatched the video and in a *light bulb* moment, have decided to build one for edible flowers with some herbs!
Great idea!

Laying it out with the flour is a fantastic tip! I was struggling to start one up but that makes it a lot easier.
Great idea. My wife plants all of her herbs very close to our home too for easy access.
All natural and simple design that anyone could make in an afternoon with all materials on site. Very handsomely done Lovely Greens.

As always, your videos are so inspirational with simple to follow instructions. I made one of these today and it turned out great. Thank you! 💚
You are so welcome!
Dear Tanya, you are an inspiration to me. Love you!
I’d love to learn more about the microclimates you created at each point
Thank you! I'm inspired!! Now I want one!

great project well done
Very interesting information!!! Thanks SO MUCH for your knowledge and time for Us 😊😊😊 So helpful ! Thanks 😃👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I bet it's already smelling wonderful!

Well Done, Lady of Lovely Greens
You’ve inspired me to make my own business of planting

Good idea with the full and enjoy the videos :)
I agree.... And note where the water is going.
That effect can be played off of,, maybe a garden that the watering of gives extra to a fruit tree, etc..
I love this video, so I built one 😊
Excellent Spiral idea. Thank you Mam.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way 🙂
My garden is in Sapa, the north west of VIETNAM, border to China, yes there is a will and found ways
Lovely Greens land in America is so big for each farmer. A lot easier than a small downside land

Good luck with the build 🙂 Have fun
Good idea. I advise you turn the bricks and plant a flower bricks hole.
Very helpful tips Tanya.
great idea never thought of things like that but that great thanks
Welcome :)
Great video as always Tanya, and I love that you love Calendula as me. Thank you for this video.
It turned out so great. I’d love to do this.
This is a wonderful idea, Tanya! I’m inspired to make one :-)
Wonderful video with wonderful info. Thanks!
Thanks, Lovely Greens !!!!
Oh, I just noticed you have one flower Chamomile, they are great.

Very nicely done!
Lovely idea, thanks. Never heard of this but love it!
Awesome idea
Love this!
That's very creative! i like it
Very beautiful
Great DIY job
Oooh beautiful just like you 💚
Just love this idea! We are getting ready to planning our back yard!! I want to build this❣️❣️❣️
A lovely idea. I believe it's an ancient design - the spiral - found carved on rock.
Eek, love this idea! Planning one now!!

love your garde ad ideas ...keep it up
I love this so much! I am now thinking of a good spot to make one!
Lovely 🌹

Amazing! Love this idea... also, love that red lipstick on you! :0
Love this idea! So cool - I just planted my herbs outside too 😊🌱
Love your DIY suggestions.
Thank you for the video! It helped me a lot 💜

I always wsnted to do something like that but raising up towards the center higher
Gonna make one of my existing beds into this... more fido resistant
Does the dirt fall through the crevices between the bricks?
Really amazing! Thank you for this tip. It's great! Bless you.

This is a gorgeous idea❤️
Perfect 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Would this be good for strawberries

It originated with Permaculture gardening but I’m not sure who/where

None of your concerns are an issue :)
How do you keep your diet from washing out of the spiral?
It doesn't erode from the spiral if you build it the way I show.

What do you mean about where the sun “sits”? My home’s yard is on the South side of my house and I am in a sub-tropical climate.
If you're in the northern hemisphere (north of the equator) then the sun sits in the south. If you're below the equator (southern hemisphere), the sun sits in the north.
Where are the Herbs you speak of, I only see an herb garden. :P
Uuurrrb 😂
This is beautiful. Does soil wash out from the sides when you water the spiral?
None that I can see but I suspect that it would do over time if one were made without a layer of mulch.
💚😊💚
I happen to have a 20 yr old pile of bricks from when our house was built. They have finally found a purpose!
I'm sure you'll be pleased with it!
Thanks for the tips, really want to try this in my garden! If you ever get a chance it would be amazing if you checked out my small vegetable garden in the UK! Have a great day everyone and liked from me! 78!
I just subbed
That looks like an ACNH fossil to me!
Want to make this, but my husband doesn't like the design . oh well....
Maybe I'll just make an oval.

Do not use cardboard as it contains too many harmful chemicals
Sorry, but the "study" floating around is misinformation. Plain brown cardboard is non-toxic and perfectly safe in the garden.
