My bf made me a cake once, and it wasn't even my birthday! It was a heart-shaped white cake with vanilla frosting and coconut with fresh orange zest mixed in, and then halved maraschino cherries scattered around the outline of the heart.
That flavor combo was so good! It remains one of my flavorites!

Actually, they did [the leveling] right. The cakes turned out pretty flat to begin with; but normally, the top part that you cut off becomes the very bottom. Then the middle is automatically flat because the original bottoms are facing together. That gives it the structural soundness it needs. Then the very top can be as rounded as you want. The icing was the issue [of it sliding around].
