    Kudos to Condoleezza Rice for finding the time in her busy career to keep her chops up at a level that she can share the stage with renowned dedicated musician like Yo-Yo Ma. Condoleezza Rice’s career in public service is already amazing but to be able to play piano at a high-level on top of that is extraordinary.

    Condoleezza is amazing in whatever she does. Wow! She was so humble referring to this accompaniment as "not because I was a world class pianist, its just that I happen to be the former Secretary of State".

    What a fantastic performance!!! You can never achieve perfection just aim for it. I think the hall was a bit dry but what a lovely performance. Imagine performing with one of the best Cellists in the World. 👏🙌🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    I'm no pro recording engineer, but the mic-ing and mixing is horrible. I've never heard a real piano and cello sound like so plasticky and artificial...

    I quit performing at my church when they kept micing my cello like this. It makes it so hard to get good sound out.

      @WaterFlame957 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      🙄🙄🙄 You should be so lucky to even have had a sound to be heard...
      In my church's orchestra, the sound guys only had mics over the brass and woodwind but none to pick up our small string section. It was almost like a joke. 🤔

    Technically it's a horrible recording though both of them are perfect performers. But one should not forget Steven Isserlis who has a perfectly thoughtful and romantic access to that piece which I personally prefer by far.

    This is great but I can barely hear Condoleezza. It sounds like the mic was inside the cello. Too bad nobody checked the mix beforehand. I love to hear the two of them playing again but with the microphone situation a lot better. Thanks

    Interesting! Glad to see a collaboration between two fine people of different political persuasion! However, as stated in a number of earlier comments, the balance in this recording is horrible and Kennedy Center should have done a better job presenting this performance to the TH-cam audience.

    I like Mr. Ma's take on the piece, but he does sound like he's be a challenge to follow, especially sitting sort-of behind Dr. Rice. They do their best to telegraph intentions, and the ensemble is really rather good. As others have noticed, the recording isn't as good as the performance.

  • @suesmith2183
    @suesmith2183 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The cello completely drowns out the sound of the piano; Ma is sitting too close to the piano and microphone so the piano part is totally lost. This just never happens with Brahms!

  • @RedTheCellist

  • @stevenpaulniles

    It's as if Ma is reading off Rice's score. And why is the balance so cello-dominant? The lid is even up all the way. He needs to come out of her space, both physically and musically. And she shouldn't be so intimidated by him.

    • @feraudyh
      @feraudyh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Possibly, but the microphone positions must be taken into account as well.
