I'm from Scotland and I've found lime is really hard to find. If that's the case for you, pine is also great and cheap at your local B&Q.

5:55 - Butt. Remember, Depth is your friend.
6:36 - Feet, side
7:50 - Remove edge of the wood block
8:51 - Nose, side. Go DEEP. Nose is his feature.
9:19 - Separating hat edge, V cuts
11:07 - Nose, side, making it round
12:30 - Top of nose, adding a deep shadow
14:43 - Shaping beard
15:13 - Hat again. remember to slicing cut, instead of just pushing.
18:25 - Doug is getting sunshine
18:48 - Finishing butt
19:48 - Arms
25:40 - Detailing Arms
27:03 - Back of shirt
29:32 - Front feet and legs

When I started wood carving, my dad gifted me a subscription to Woodcarving Illustrated magazine. My first ones had holes punched in the spine. My dad passed away on December 17, 2021 from complications due to several health issues. My mom has continued with the gift subscription. I've marked pages of carving projects that I want to do. I keep them in order by the oldest magazine to the most recent one. Also, I've ordered several other carving books and bought some when I attended the Artistry in Wood. Your little carvings are so cute!

I just want to tell you that you have ignited a spark in me to start carving again. I recently inherited my father’s knives and supplies. I watched this video 3 times and carved a hillbilly/Gnome. Then today I went out after watching your painting videos and bought 25 colors, boiled linseed oil, Howard feed-and -feed wax. I see myself carving lots of characters in my shop. You have been so helpful to me as a beginner carver and I thank you for your detailed teaching.
I used your teaching of how to carve the 1 by 1 carvings to make my little carvings much better than I was able to do before

Doug, these videos that even a beginner like me can follow are so great. But I find myself constantly stopping and backing up the videos so I can try to copy what you just did with one magical slice. Here’s a suggestion. When you are recommending safety gloves, recommend gloves with touchscreen fingertips so we don’t have to pull our gloves off so often. 😃
This series is exactly what we need Doug!! So awesome. I definitely have to practice on making 1 cuts in areas like the pants as I always find myself trying to make things too perfect and end up recutting numerous times and winding up with way too deep of a hole and mess!
Try using a bigger piece of wood.

I live in New Zealand, born and raised. I'm turning 70 yrs in a short couple of months.
Here in NZ we dont usually whittle. Carve yes, but whittle no.
I live in a motorhome fulltime and have access to plenty of all sorts of timber, where pine is easy access roadside, so plenty of material.
Have always had a 'bent' towards working in wood and bought a tri-set of Flexcut knives and a knife strop for sharpening.
Then I watched some tutorials with yours included. BY FAR, your easy and methodical explanations and demos kick-started me and now have quite a few carvings to my credit. I took to it like a duck to water and am enjoying myself immensely, thanks to your tutorials.
So! Much obliged Doug Linker - you're the man!

Awesome! I've carved mostly with chainsaws and power tools. Theres a simple beauty and satisfaction in creating something with just a knife. Its reminiscent of catching small native brook trout. Fishing can be very complicated with boats and gear, but I'm drawn to the simple beauty of those small stream trout that speak to the essence of fishing. Thanks for so generously sharing your techniques and knowledge

Have to say, as a beginner I love this tutorial! Started whittling in the school where I work two months ago, we made butter knives, then I made an owl from your tutorial.

I love this style of gnome so much- I'd used your previous hillbilly tutorial before, but it's great to have a simplified version for more efficient gnome production and distribution

This series came at a perfect time for me. I need to get back into simpler carvings to renew my skills and confidence.
Quite rightly, these videos are going to attract a lot of newbies, even children. So, to everyone watching this, please wear a carving glove as Doug says. Doug makes this look so easy, but his knife control and awareness of where the blade is going takes many years of practice. I cut myself very badly doing one of Dougs Christmas trees (not Dougs fault btw), due to the wood breaking. It took me a good while to get the confidence back to carve and I wouldn’t want someone to hurt themselves and not carve ever again. As a compromise, cut the index finger out of a carving glove and wear that if you don’t want to wear a full glove. Doug, you da man!
it's taken almost 2 months to recover from last darn index finger cut (xacto blades work well against flesh). This 1 x 1 attempt I took Doug's advice not only wearing my gloves but also using a 1 x 1 x 7" block and will saw off the nearly finished piece in the end then clean up the feet but the 1 x 1 x 7 leaves GOOD SAFE hand room to avoid the darn blade slips.
it's the first video of the series, but I already love it!
I'm onboard, thanks for getting me out of trying to be perfect and going back to be able to sit down with my grandson and show him how much fun carving can be. Who cares, it will be just us in the backyard.😁

I came here to say exactly that! Bob Ross opened up painting for millions of nervous beginners and Doug does exactly the same for whittlers / carvers. The man is captivating and his enthusiasm is infectious.

I've been whittling for about 3 years & I enjoy your videos .Have done some of them owl, bear, scarecrow, santa, little man, larger hillbilly not great but their not just blocks of wood now. But I was complicating it wanting to do too much & the enjoyment started to fade. At 74 I don't need complications. I sat on my porch & did 1 of the hillbilly gnome. I enjoyed it. I'm glad I stumbled upon your series intro video & it was just what I needed to hear. Thanks alot.

I carved along with you, but turned mine into a gnome. My wife loved it and wants me to make another. In the past month or so, something finally clicked in my brain and my carvings have gotten a lot better. Takes time and practice for sure! Thanks Doug!

My first ever carve. This video got me carving. Went a little far, broke some things, fixed some things, broke some more things and got to a point I didn’t have much left. But this little hillbilly put a smile on my face. Thanks Doug.

First I want to thank you for getting me started doing carvings. And as a possible help toward carvers using a longer than two inch stock, why carve the little dude upside down. That would make the hat closest to the holding hand and clear the feet from the stock. Carving the hat could done after cutting him from the working stock. Hope I said that clearly. Keep ‘‘em coming. I’m carving them for my grandchildren.

Wow 6 years already.... I remember getting so excited about the hillbilly video and how easy you made it back then... I think everyone and their dog made a Doug Outside hillbilly... Its a classic video same as the original so you wanna carve a bear video... I see a new resurgence of hillbillies being carved... I'm looking forward to carving along to this one again
I started woodcarving with your "fantastically simple" video way back when so that I'd have something to do that is light and easy to carry along on camping excursions. Then I started adding more knives, band saws, gouges, and oh so much more! Your 1" series has inspired me to get back to a minimal kit that's more about FUN with a knife and a bit of wood and less about having all the latest and greatest toys. To help keep it minimal, I like to carve a little dude at a campsite and then leave him there as a treasure for some kid to find. That way I actually end up with even LESS stuff to carry! Thanks so much for what you do!

I'm going to get a silicone craft mat because I carve at my computer desk and get shavings all over the place. I love this hillbilly project and found that repeating it is improving my carving skills boat loads. I'm so glad I found your videos!

Doug, just want to say that this 1x1 series has been my favorite by far. I find I get tired working on bigger projects and these are just right to sit down and knock out in 30 mins to an hour! I think I've made about 15 of these little guys so far.

My son wants a whittling kit for Christmas so I started researching! I’ve decided to order a Beavercraft Set S18X I saw on Chainsaw Carver Ryan Cook’s review. He said to check way better hand carver Doug Linker And that’s how I became a Huge Fan of you both!

Hey Doug. Loving your 1x1 series! Been carving a bunch of your hillbillies/gnomes for fun. My 9 year old grandson Miles was over while I was carving one and he suggested making a dude with a REALLY long beard. Ended up with a 2" tall hillbilly sporting a 6" long beard. Of course he had to be a "shelf sitter" to make room for the beard. Turned out pretty cute. If you need an idea for a variation on your hillbilly give it a try. I'd love to see your version!

"Depth is your friend". Good way to remember that, I just started a few months ago, and I that is easy to see in my carvings. I have a penguin that I have "finished" twice now, and he still looks a bit chubby. Width, height all looks good, and each time I look at him, I say I need to take more off the front and back
