For me, Anime just lives in the same bubble as regular TV shows. If it's a good show I'll watch it, regardless of the format. People who exclusively watch anime and people who say "Oh I don't like ANY anime" are either a little too obsessed or are too closed minded

To be fair I can understand why people can say “I would never watch anime” because even the ones commonly regarded as amazing often have distasteful tropes. Like 80% of anime fans will say MHA is amazing but also it has 15 year old girls being sexualized, and that’s just not factored as a negative element.

My Hero is great, but it's great as a recent shonen anime that heavily caters to people that have seen every other popular shonen anime and are either desensitized to or actively into the problematic tropes (hopefully more of the former with this specific show, a lot of the objectification gets pretty fucked with how young many of the characters are). As just a general TV show however it's... fine. The setting is neat and the characters are interesting but it has all the usual issues of shonen anime (overexplaining simple things, constantly repeating what just happened including the overexplained bits, recycling scenes outright to pad time, predictable narrative arc where the super special main character is always the center of attention and keeps getting more overpowered, etc) that would keep me from strongly recommending it to any random person.
On the other hand I usually recommend Cowboy Bebop (to borrow another example from the video) even to people that have never seen anime, since I don't think you need to be actively invested in the tropes of anime for that show to work (and on the flip side, when the tropes pop up they shouldn't get in the way they way they would for a show like My Hero). It's just an interesting, well-written show that happens to be in the medium of anime. A lot of great anime is like that, but a lot of "great" anime is only actually that to people who are already heavily into the genre and it's more "great that we get more of the same thing we love, even if it's nothing special." It can be difficult to tell the difference between the two when people don't make it explicit most of the time.

It's kinda amazing how quickly he digs to root causes of behavior, aka anime fans being very defensive because of the prejudice they're exposed to. A lot of anime doesn't exactly help their cause because so many shows are seemingly aimed at young children, but contain ecchi elements aimed at adults. Whereas western media is violent ( at least the illusion of violence) anime isn't afforded the same illusion.

The thing is in american shows theyll have a relationship and just actually have sex, in anime its like all they can think about is sex but no one ever actually gets together and has it they just obsess about every hint of anything inappropriate by getting nosebleeds and like half the jokes are about how someone is being put in a situation that looks like its inappropriate but dudes just trying to live his life. American shows might be more casual about just throwing sex in to hold certain peoples attention but compared to anime its relatively contained, its not suggestive its blunt and the rest of the time its just drama or comedy or whatever.
I can say this because ive watched too many slice of life series, i wish slice of life would include something like on the road by Jack Kerouac but ill take the cgdct in the meantime at least its relaxed and unstressful.
As someone who considers myself a bit of an anime fan, but the type who's not really ever been deep in the community itself. I gotta say, NL is right. The type of people in chat going on the defensive are being a little silly. Any anime watcher taking a rational unbiased look at the stuff they've seen, will know that:
A: Most anime are really bad, and that's okay. A lot of the anime I enjoyed I know are bad.
B: Anime is pretty damn horny.
Yes you can definitely point out many good anime that aren't *that* horny. But that's usually just compared to the average anime... Like NL said about sex in American shows, you've just become desensitised to it. I could get the need to defend anime, I personally get a bit sad seeing someone dismiss all of anime, when I know how many amazing ones are out there. But you can't just go around on the defensive either, because that's not gonna convince anyone and just gives a bad impression.
I personally think "Frieren" as a recent anime is an absolute master piece that I'd want everyone to watch, its message is something everyone could benefit from taking in. But I also accept that it's still anime, so even if it's not "as horny as most anime", there's still a lot of stuff there that will be hard for someone entering anime for the first time to swallow. It's not even just horniness either tbf, even things like typical anime humour is something that can be hard to get used to for a new viewer. So let's all just try and be a little less defensive, and take our personal media enjoyment a little less seriously. You should be able to watch and enjoy Gurren Lagann and still laugh at how stupid the plot really is when you think about it.

Clannad is the best show for me (that is an anime) While Mushoku Tensei is tied for best anime (that mostly only anime viewers would enjoy)

yea, and its not just stuff like fanservice that can change that for me but some anime I'm not able to recommend just because there's like a big cultural gap. Like world trigger is one of my favorite shows of all time but I can't recommend it as a first time show because there's so many japanese names that people mix them up since they use both first and last names to refer to people which doesn't really happen in america

The answer to this is that 80% of the anime that you see and gets recommended are late-night broadcasts, increasingly marketed towards smaller and smaller niches. Anime films tend to go the opposite direction, trying to cast the widest net possible, something that Kimi no Na Wa succeeded in like none other, so you'll find those being generally much more digestible. Just different approaches to producing as much profit out of a work as possible, it's all very calculated.
I feel like shows like Highschool of the Dead and Highschool DxD would kill NL.
I think that watching anime you get inoculated against the horny moments, but if you're watching it for the first time it sticks out like a sore thumb, plus NL is the exact type of guy who wouldn't ever suspend his disbelief unless it's about the multiverse of madness or the quantum realm, so even good anime with a weird premise wouldn't appeal to him

I don’t think that’s the issue, NL loves many different types of movies and some of them have absolutely absurd premises. The real issue is that so much of anime is so obviously immature, primarily targeted at an audience of teenage boys. When you get recommended the rare anime that isn’t literal high school drama it’s most likely something trying to appeal to a fantasy rather than trying to be a thought experiment. What’s the point of the main character living in this otherworldly realm? To give him big swords and a collection of girlfriends.

A lot of anime is definitely made with teens and young adults in mind as the main audience. A lot of middle or high school-aged main characters, a lot of self-discovery and coming of age tales, some mildly sexual content at times that would appeal a lot to that group. So with that in mind if you're in your late 20s and beyond and/or not particularly used to that media it might not be likely you find a lot of that stuff appealing. Which is OK. And like NL said, there's still anime shows and movies out there that may appeal to you: it's a diverse medium, there's a lot of stuff out there. It's just that you have a lot of stuff that probably won't appeal to you to look past to find it.
What I’ve come to learn is that most of the huge anime (like basically anything adapted from a shonen manga) is just a glorified 2-D marvel movie and/or general hospital for teenage boys . They definitely have their merits, I mean Ive caught up to or finished all of the big 3 and many of the huge jump series that have came out since. They’re garbage but they’re great at spectacle.
If you want the equivalent to “Breaking Bad” or whatever prestige TV series / A24 film you need to look for shows that were adapted from light novel / seinen publication. Those are targeted towards adults and people that actually read books so you don’t run into the same problem of every single character in the series having a sub 70 IQ besides the 1 “genius” character with an IQ of 110. _Berserk, Vinland Saga, Black Lagoon, Baccano, March Comes Like a Lion, Katanagatari, Monster, Ergo Proxy, Kaiba, etc_ are all genuinely amazing pieces of art. Some that imo surpass peak American TV in part bc their audience is so used to insanely ridiculous TV from all the bad anime that comes out that they have way more room to experiment.
And yeah NL is right, anime does have a bit of a horny problem. In most cases the shows I love are good enough I can just ignore them but sometimes it’s just too much. Like I didn’t include the monogatari series in my list because even though I think that series just bleeds style (the dialogue, character writing, cinematography, setting, animation style and directing, and story are all just 😙👌) the series is almost ruined because of how horny the original author was. If he was castrated as a young man I would be able to recommend it to everybody I know but he wasn’t so I’m just going to have to live my life pretending I didn’t watch 100+ episodes of that series (with the exception of anonymous public forums)

A lot of anime appeals to pedophiles, not teens and young adults. It is a diverse medium, but the shows that people choose when trying to argue that rarely ever support their point. Like anime fans can't just recommend something actually good like FLCL, Paranoia Agent, or Satoshi Kon movies. It's always either a drawn out shounen show, Evangelion(sludge), or just implicit child porn. The entire isekai genre is actually baffling, even with the escapism excuse. Just read modern superhero comics if you want escapism that isn't just a rape fantasy. The one thing not diverse about modern anime is the voice acting, though. I can't stand hearing male guys make the weirdest sound effects constantly in my ear and then the women in the show sounding like alvin and the chipmunks.

Shounen anime is made with young men as the main intended audience and is of the most popular anime/manga genres. Even stuff beyond shounen featuring casts of people in their teen years is made in large part to connect to an audience of similar age range. There is some perversion and questionable content in the medium but I don't think it's quite accurate to say "it's made for pxdos." Also odd to mention "rxpe fantasy" with isekai, that's not inherent to isekai at all...
Also FLCL and Satoshi Kon movies have massive recognition by people fairly familiar with anime... I mean they might not be quite as readily recognized nowadays as a Demon Slayer or whatever but just because their popularity doesn't match more easily digestible / currently relevant stuff doesn't mean much, that's kind of to be expected.

I think the biggest problem with the criticism that anime receives online and how people take that criticism has more to do with it obviously coming from a place of ignorance. It's just a very easy kind of thing to say if you want a bunch of people to agree with you, and the worst part is it's somehow both unfair and too lenient at the same time. There are so many valid ways to criticize anime, and no one is making any of those criticisms, because they aren't actually familiar with any of the material they're supposedly talking about. And then they capitulate, and say something like "Oh, I liked Attack on Titan though." It's just a combination of vapid toothless criticisms misdirecting from actual criticisms and the perennially irritating behavior of someone who clearly knows nothing about a given subject pretending like they have authority just because they have an audience who will listen to them.
Just, like, watch one (1) anime that isn't in the first five things netflix suggests to you. Watch an Oshii movie or something.

Like, no, you've watched 4 anime in your entire life, and you chose 4 anime that were meant for horny middle school boys. There's definitely a discussion to be had on the overuse of certain tropes that undercut tension for sexual titillation within certain genres of anime, but that's never really the direction that the discussion is ever being taken. And again, trope overuse is prevalent in all mediums of entertainment; it's not unique to anime.
That being said, there's definitely some weird-ass anime out there, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Weird is preferable to boring.

I feel like my anime taste is very similar to NL's. I loved cowboy bebop but find it really hard to get into the ones that are a bit "too anime", you know, where every character is either unnecessarily well endowed or its set in a high school .
If you resonate with that, I recommend checking out Monster. It's not supernatural, it's like a serial killer psychological thriller that looks good and has a cool story. No ladies with booba that would cause life altering back injuries, no talking swords, just a serial killer and police work

Gurren Lagann is still great, there's nothing else like it. Even Kill la Kill didn't reach the same heights. Just a constant progression of world, stakes and character at a breakneck pace. It doesn't reward cynicism at all though. Let Gurren Lagann hit your heart before your head and you'll have a great time.

Not to be that guy, but the only way to consume Jojo content is to skip to Steel Ball Run and read the manga. Idk how that anime has gotten such a fanbase, when parts 1-3 and partly 4 are tedious monster of the week shows where the plot moves forward .5% every episode and the stand powers don't sound like they were thought up by some dude a week into a PCP binge. SBR and Jojolion are artistically (when SBR switched to monthly) and narratively some of the most profound comics ever written.

I love anime that is not anime. Like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. No cute sidekicks, no over the top bullshit, just a really really good emotional story showed in the anime artstyle. And even there, I get annoyed by over the top anime shit from time to time.
I liked Attack on Titan before it became full on anime shitfest with long conversations saying absolutely nothing, everyone is an edgelord and nothing happens for 4 episodes then it ends on a cliffhanger. Never saw the most recent episodes cause i just dont care anymore, my time is a little too precious for me to watch 40 minutes of nothing.
The exact other side is stuff like Fairy Tail. I absolutely abhored that. Loved the setting, liked the art, then the anime bullshit started happening all around... please no. Same with Bleach. Naruto is so slow you could die of old age before you get to a conclusion of an arc. Why?
