english translation:
The Sun had not brought
The day to the world yet,
When a maiden
Went out of her dwelling.
On her pale face
Grief could be seen,
Often from her heart
A deep sigh was drawn.
Thus, treading upon flowers,
She wandered, now here, now there,
And lamented her lost loves
Like this:
- O Love - she said,
Gazing at the sky, as she stood -
Where's the fidelity
That the deceiver promised? -
Poor her!
- Make my love come back
As he used to be
Or kill me, so that
I will not suffer anymore. -
Poor her! She cannot bear
All this coldness!
- I don't want him to sigh any longer
But if he's far from me.
No! He will not make me suffer
Anymore, I swear!
He's proud
Because I languish for him.
Perhaps if I fly away from him
He will come to pray to me again.
If her eyes are more serene
Than mine,
O Love, she does not hold in her heart
A fidelity so pure as mine.
And you will not receive from those lips
Kisses as sweet as mine,
Nor softer. Oh, don't speak!
Don't speak! you know better than that! -
So amidst disdainful tears,
She spread her crying to the sky;
Thus, in the lovers' hearts
Love mixes fire and ice.

Bravissima Kristen ❤
Monteverdi is where it's at. That dissonant cadence in the intro is wonderful.
my favourite part, too!
what a marvellous soprano!
Tanta bellezza, meraviglioso. Monteverdi dovrebbe essere contento.
Marvelous match between singers and instrumentalists, Kristin is lovely
It's so beautiful! Who else got here because of "LE PONT DES ARTS"?
me :)
I did as well.
Una delle interpretazioni più emozionanti e coinvolgenti che abbia mai sentito. Suono, amalgama, sentimento profondamente espresso che riesce a smuovere le lacrime. Monteverdi sublime e artisti degni di lui.
Grande Monteverdi..canto sublime
The instrumentation in this version is so lush, my goodness

I,too !
She really shines, hits those high notes like a nymph
dat doet iets met een mens.... prachtig!
Beautiful work from Claudio Monteverdi, listen to the dissonance at 1:07, fairly un-precedented for its time I am sure. Just love the ground bass from 2:07. I use this harmonic device to teach my students here in India composition. The way he introduces suspensions and dissonance in the melodic line must have been revolutionary in the Renaissance me thinks.
perfeito

As an alpha patriarchal heterosexual Republican, i must say i love this cacophony
@@tescheurich You must be mistaken somewhere - either you're not all those sad things you said about yourself, or you don't really love it. Perhaps you just think this is how love looks like. Monteverdi certainly wasn't like you... Better return to your Village People and Freddie Mercury! ;-)
