Written and directed by Academy Award® winner Sofia Coppola (2003, Best Writing, Lost In Translation), Marie Antoinette is an electrifying yet intimate re-telling of the turbulent life of history's favorite villainess. Kirsten Dunst portrays the ill-fated child princess who married France's young and indifferent King Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman). Feeling isolated in a royal court rife with scandal and intrigue, Marie Antoinette defied both royalty and commoner by living like a rock star, which served only to seal her fate.
This movie got some bad reviews at the time of release, with people getting bent out of shape about the modern references. For me - all those touches hit home how young and immature these people actually were. The music and modern sensibility of their behavior, speech and conversations really made that click. It's an underrated movie.
Still there are many things that are accurate like the ships in the nearby lake trying to cannon down each other for their amusement or Marie Antoinette’s gambling

i think, this movie is pretty well done.
Sofia Coppola’s a genius for putting a teenager-y soundtrack in a period drama film of a teenage queen, it’s a nice twist and makes the audience more aware of how sheltered, blissfully naive, impressionable, and happy-go-lucky Marie Antoinette was, just like how a lot of privileged teenagers are today.
Amazing soundtrack, this movie does not pretend to be an accurate historical representation, this is all about the romanticism.

In terms of music the word "romanticism" is specific, not general. The first of the "Romantic" musical composers was/is Beethoven. And Beethoven, who was born in the 18th century, is known as an early 19th century composer. The "Romantic" era for literature began in the late 18th century; the era as music, in the first decade of the 19th. Some music historian could just chime in with a correction concerning exact years. This is the accepted way to discuss "Romanticism" in terms of music. Except for Beethoven, the Romantic composers all started their careers after the close of the French Revolution. Marie Antionette died (was executed) prior to the start of the "Romantic" era for music.
This film shows 18th century dress and manners as extremely constrictive and formal. Musical composition for this time period was aligned with manners, traditions, and formalities. It was only in the time of the final phase of the French Revolution, that the "Romantic" composers started to present work which was highly emotional and innovative. Marie Antionette never heard any of this, while she was here on Earth. For Marie Antionette, music and dance was as bound by tradition and manners, as the clothing.

He meant by "romanticism " that the music from The Cure, which is an 80's band, is here to embellish, to idealize, so to romanticize the Marie Antoinette fantasy from our modern imaginary. So you also lack of a vocabulary precison in a way.
for some reason this scene with this particular song playing has really stuck with me. It's the happiest she ever is, and yet the song makes me so sad for some reason. You're not there with them, you're on the other end of history, knowing they're all on the way to ruin and tragedy.
The reason it makes you sad is probably due to a Pavlovian effect. When the (I'm going to use the general term here since I'm not familiar with this) East Asian performers come in, there's a particular noise overlayed in the track. This happens before things that are "wrong" happens throughout the movie. (Affair with Count Ferson and the estate getting broken into by the mob later on in the film.) On rewatches, this affect will grow stronger, and even the song removed from the movie might start triggering that feeling of everything coming to a head.

Especially when he subtly blew out the candles after she laughed it off. It gives off the same energy as the part where the servants clean the eggs before she collects them. She doesn’t have a clear view of reality because people protected her from it. Until they couldn’t.

It took me three viewings to finally notice the sneakers. It was a truly important movie to depict the youth and immaturity of the court and especially Louis and Antionette. And the way Coppola depicted the way they found their own romance was intriguing.

I love this Marie-Antoinette version so much the soundtrack, the screenplay, and every interactions. Superb. And also the Oscar winning best costume!
When I was younger, I didn't appreciate this movie, I actually hated it I thought it was trying to be "edgy" and felt it was pretentious. But it was only cause I didn't understand it like I do now watching as an adult, the creative decisions the director made, made a whole lot of sense. It was a way to connect this particular time in history to the modern age. It was to convey how young and naïve Marie was, and how she was oblivious to what was going on around outside the palace, like most teenagers and young people nowadays. Younger folk, especially the ones who live in first world countries tend to be naïve towards the living conditions in poorer communities. Marie and the King were no different. People generally have good intentions, like Marie, she did a lot of charitable things if you dig deep into her history. She was just naïve, sheltered, and too young to govern, she was taught a lifestyle I feel like she felt she needed to adapt to, to be accepted by the French court.

Hands down the coolest birthday party ever
People who say that it was a bad soundtrack, only exposes the bad taste it has. How u even dare to say that The Cure, Joy Division/New Order, Siouxsie And The Banshees or Aphex Twin are even bad? It may look a bit strange but in the title of the movie it highlights "Marie Antoinette the TEENAGE Queen" There's even a scene where a pair of Converse are with the rest of the shoes. It wasn't a mistake, doesn't seek to be historically accurate and the actual music thing it's just to prove the point that she was just like a regular teenager but with power, a power that she never chose.
No one invites me to parties like this.

The recent dislike on this movie is odd. I thought everyone knew it by now that this movie is not supposed to be historically accurate?
Hell, there is even a scene in this movie where Marie has a party in her room, trying on shoes. And the scene briefly shows a pair of converse shoes in the pile. Apparently, I heard this was done to remind the audience that Marie Antoinette, was still a teenager back then.
I honestly feel like having these historical figures act like the way we do in these modern times, makes us relate or feel for the characters more. Maybe what they acted like back then was completely different to us. But I think this movie tries to paint said feeling, in a way we could relate.

I think that Sofia tried to bring Marie Antoinette story to this century and capture young people, it's very hard to be exact in the time's protocol, the public would never understand the nuances, it's another kind of value and thought. I think the film is brilliant yet completely unreal.
I was amazed Marie Antoinette eventually got along so well with her husband and the king loosen up to his wife. Too bad it will all fall crumbling down in a few short years with both losing not only their fortunes but also their heads.

Crazy how Duchess De Polignac had the least worst death out of all them here even tho she was the most rebellious and free spirited of Marie Antoinette’s trio, the princess de lamballe got stabbed multiple times and then beheaded despite being the reserved one in the group while the Duchess de Polignac just got sick and died of sadness in her bed.

Somehow a period piece with modern music just doesn't work...
With enough suspension of disbelief you can see that it’s trying to emulate modern Rom coms where Theres a montage cut of the protagonist enjoying life in between the drama as a bit of a breather. In the historical context, it’s to show that the royals are a bunch of drunk gossips that like to party

I heard something about a Knight's tail and they explained why they used modern music in it. I think the same applies to this. They said they used music to give us the same feel as their music did back then. You would not get the same feeling hearing a song from that period to hype up a crowd as you would hearing we will rock you. It's not saying that is the music that would be playing. It is communicating music with that type of energy that would be playing.

@@examichelle None of which will be known of 300 years from now, nor will their "music" be played, unlike Bach, Mozart, Handel, Beethoven or Vivaldi, etc. who actually wrote and performed at the time depicted in the film. A distinctly period piece should have distinctly period music. Again though, the visuals were nice and the acting was poor.
