  • Learn what a drafter / BIM manager does in this full interview with Illia Karagianis, a draftsman and BIM Manager at Baukultur.
This interview was used to put together the full-length architecture documentary “Behind Closed Doors - The Life of an Architect”. The documentary gives you an insight into the life of an architect.
Watch the full documentary here: • Behind Closed Doors - ...
A big thanks to Illia for his participation in the documentary. It was great to get a glimpse into the day in a life of a drafter / BIM manager.
Do you ever wonder what happens in a day in the life of drafter or BIM manager? In this full interview, you’ll hear from Illia, a draftsman and BIM manager at Baukultur, an architectural practice in South Australia.
Illia gives us an insight into his role as drafter and BIM manager of an architectural practice. He explains his day from morning to evening, walking through the most common jobs he works on and what he enjoys most and least about his role as an architect and founding director. Lastly, Illia gives advice to students and aspiring drafters in order to be successful as a drafter.
What an architect does is typically hidden behind closed doors. But, as architecture students, how do we know what we are getting ourselves into? Why is it such a mystery as to what an architect does? The profession of architecture might not be as glorious as it seems.
In this full architecture documentary, you will witness what a day in the life of an architect looks, feels, and tastes like (spoiler: coffee). Truthfully, the life of an architect is not all sunshine and rainbows. Despite the stress, late nights and years of rigorous study and practice . . . in the end, is it worth becoming an architect? Is the architecture life rightfully exalted?
The documentary “Behind Closed Doors - The Life of an Architect” will bring you along a day in the life of architects, interior architects, interior designers, draftsmen, BIM managers, landscape architects, graduates of architecture, intern architects and architecture students.
From morning to evening, you will experience what it is like in the life of an architect. This will help you decide whether it is something you might be interested in doing or continuing. Maybe you are not cut out for the life of an architect?
The late architect, Zaha Hadid once said “if you want an easy life, don’t become an architect”.
In the architecture documentary, you will discover what Hadid was talking about. What are these big challenges you will need to learn to overcome? More importantly, HOW can you overcome them?
The interviewees in this documentary provide an insight into their lives within the architecture profession. They share their biggest struggles, favourite moments, advice to their younger selves and answer the question “is it all worth it?”.
If you have ever thought about studying architecture or becoming an architect, this documentary is a must watch. So much of what an architect does is hidden behind closed doors. So, let us open them. Let us dive into the life of an architect behind closed doors.

Cool, the advise i would give to young people still in school/uni is, learn programming, our profession benefits a lot from good programmers making tools and things more easy for us technicians.

i personally believe the top tier BIM coordinators / drafter are the ones who have the hands on field experience with their drafting trade. i am a plumbing mechanical pipe drafter. i worked out in the field as a journeyman plumber for 10 years before advancing into the office. Once i learned the modeling software it was a wrap, knowing the trade already gives me a huge advantage over others and in coordination meetings. i didn't go to school at all other then my trade school for plumbing

I'm finding my Bachelor of Architectural Design course to be less about job-ready skills, that will help in the real world, and more about indoctrination and artsy fartsy bullshit.. It's really quite frustrating.. There's very minimal taught on drafting, CAD, and especially anything to do with designing structures that can actually be built.. I'm actually looking to transfer to a drafting course, and revit courses..

    • @kylesinko
      @kylesinko  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I found that the case too, especially for the first year. Though I think it does get into more practical skills, it’s a slow journey to get there, mainly doing more practical stuff in the final years.

@@kylesinko I've actually had the opposite experience.. The first year seemed to be much more fundamental information, and I felt like I was learning the trade, but since moving onto the studios, I've found them to be ridiculously removed from reality.. I'm thinking of changing my studies to a drafting course, and doing some revit courses.. Will get me into the workplace, I believe..
