Nice! I have two of these, a Farm an Field and a Tidioute that I have because I collect GEC. I've never whittled in my life, but I've been watching your videos to learn how. Nice to know I can put them to work.
I think the shape of the handle is part of the Farm and Field 'brand'. The Tidioute Pocket Carvers are more rounded. So it depends. There's one other choice, and I have done it twice - the Sambar Stag. I have chosen the Stag models of some other GECs just to get 'rounded' handles. Not all GECs with stag handles have a rounded grip, but some do. I think the Pocket Carvers are a neat model. Liked your video. Appreciated seeing the Pocket Carver in use. Take care. Stay healthy. Thanks.
Nice! Glad you like the knife. That’s the same version I have. Fair review, and I agree that would’ve preferred some roundover on the sides, but not a big deal. Keep up the good work... will stay tuned :-)
Thanks for the video. Just ordered mine. I kept looking for a pocket carver but the flexcut just didn't speak to me. This looks like it'll fit the bill nicely.
They sure know what they're doing at GEC. It's hard to beat. Great review, thanks Brian. 👍 Have you ever seen a Congress pattern knife? I doubt that you'll get one with as good steel (perhaps a Böker or GEC), but you may like them.
100% the GEC. I carried all the flexcuts, the GEC and a few others for at least a month and the GEC came out on top. Just needs te edge updated and you are golden
@@CarvingisFun Awesome! I'm glad to read this because I just bought one, it is in route. Hoping that stropping will get it sharp for me as I don't have any other sharpening skills yet.
Stropping will help, but I do reccomend reducing the edge grind angle of the bevel a bit with 1000 or 2000 grit sandpaper or stone for best results. Contact me on Instagram (if you have it) and I can send some picture examples
Great review. You mention that you ground down the blade a bit and then honed it to make it to your needs and sharper. Do you think you can do a demo on that, I would love to learn how to do that. Thanks
Thanks! I actually have plans on making that video and hope to have it out on sept 7th. Just need to make sure I block out some time to make it properly and get the right camera angles.
I’m new to the hobby and wanting to learn as much as I can as I go along. Is there any concern about the blades not locking in place? Does that in any way limit their usage or increase the likelihood of injury using them? Thanks for posting these very useful videos!
I have found no need for the blade to lock in place if you arent being overly agressive with the knife and if the knife is of decent quality. For example, the GEC pocker carver and flexcut whittlin jack both don't lock but I feel very comfortable carving basswood with them. Even then, I personally like to wear finger guards just in case.
I want this knive so so badly! But to get it delivered to me in the Netherlands , would cost me a total of €135. Converted to USD that would be around $160. Those prices make me so sad😔 I'm a user not a collector. I whittle every day.
Yep, I've been hearing the same things. Someone mentioned that GEC usually does one run of each style of knife and doesn't make any more, which is a shame because they are really nice knives.
i’ve used this knife for several years now and it really is the best all all-arounder pocket knife for whittling. great orange peeler too.
Just bought this knife on the secondary market, should be coming in the mail tomorrow, can’t wait to get it in

So I picked up one of the #38 English Whittlers and can't wait to try it out. Even tho it was like 170 here in Germany...
Ooch! That was a little expensive! They are good knives though!
Awesome review!! I’m pretty sure I’m going to get one now. That’s for the honest review
You're welcome! They are indeed great little knives.
@@CarvingisFun it’s a great tool but I never be able to afford it 🐾🦊🇮🇹🇬🇧

Never thought about that, but makes sense!

I'm happy I caved and picked up the knife, it's really nice!
I just went for it. Ordered me a #62 orange delrin.
Nice! I'm sure you will like yours.
Thanks for the video. Just ordered mine. I kept looking for a pocket carver but the flexcut just didn't speak to me. This looks like it'll fit the bill nicely.

I really like mine, they are just a well thought out and well made pocket knife.

Seen, yes. Owned, no. Maybe one day I will pick one up if I find one that I like :)
Would love to have an update on the GEC if you kept using it or decided on the Flexcut instead.

Have you used the GEC 38 english carver? Would love to hear your compare and contrast.

Ouch!! You check out ebay or contact GEC for a local distributor?
@@CarvingisFun ckecked ebay daily. And the nearest distributor sells it for €110 I believe. Plus shipping. So that's a no go either. 😕
Darn! Maybe after this covid stuff clears up, shipping may get a bit more relaxed and you find more distributors to pick from.
@@CarvingisFun those prices where the same before covid.
Double darn!
April 2021, hard to find and starting at 140 on eBay.

Are they single edged blades?
I live in canada - does anyone know a good online source for this beauty?
They are becoming excessively hard to come by, even I am having trouble finding them anywhere except on Ebay.
Why does no one sell this knife & the few places on eBay you can find one, it's like 5 times the price?
Theres a bunch of price gougers buying them up and selling them for more on ebay. Its a shame
Nice knife but as with all GEC knives by the time you find out about them they’re all sold out.
Isn't that the truth....
👍👍🤠🤠🎯🎯
What name pocket knife would you suggest for mini clay sculpting projects. Example: I carve accessories for vintage toys. Thank you.
I have a feeling some stockman style knives will give you a good variety of blades to use
