  • Birding Costa Rica Part 1 of 2 videos.
Photographs taken throughout Costa Rica primarily January and February 2018. Also photographs from a brief trip in December 2016.
"Cover Birds" are a pair of Rufous Motmots photographed at La Selva Biological Station in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, on the Caribbean side of Costa Rico. La Selva was the first stop of our self-driving 2018 trip. Observing these unusual birds in this synchronized posture was unexpected. So glad we have a photo of it.
    Featuring:
HUMMINGBIRDS scattered throughout the video-Long-billed Hermit; Violet Sabrewing, Charming Hummingbird; White-crested Coquette; Purple-throated Mountain Gem; Magnificent Hummingbird ; Black-bellied Hummingbird; Green-crowned Brilliant; Coppery-headed Emerald; Scaly-breasted Hummingbird; Green Violetear. We consider the male Fiery-throated Hummingbird, beginning at (22:19), outstanding.
    A Quartet of EUPHONIAS-Spot-crowned, Yellow-crowned, Yellow-throated and Olive-backed
    Also a Quartet of TROGONS-Gartered, Slaty-tailed, White-tailed and Black-throated
Content includes hummingbirds, motmots, tanagers, cotingas, quetzals, trogons, woodpeckers, warblers, kingfishers and many more.
Look for a perky Flame-throated Warbler (03:19), Resplendent Quetzal (22:42), and a Turquoise Cotinga (16:03) to name a just a few standouts.
Also appearing are Two-toed Sloths (08:48), Howler Monkey, iguanas, Eyelash Viper (13:15 with closeup following); Poison Fart Frog; Pizote (18:01); and a very confident White-headed Capuchin Monkey (24:11).
Locations included La Selva Biological Station, La Paz Waterfall Gardens, Carara National Park, Tarcoles River, Herradura, Jaco, San Isidro de General, Los Cosingos, Bosque del Tolomuco, Quetzal Paradise, Parque Nacional Los Quetzales, and the Scarlet Macaw Sanctuary in Puntarenas.
    Our excellent local guides:

This is a tough one. Both incredible. I suppose Ecuador is #1....with a combination of "NE, central mountains and Western" Costa Rica 2nd. Best times for Costa Rica is in the winter (Jan-April). Used a guided tour in Ecuador....but did it on our own in Costa Rica....just researched the places to go on our own.

@@global_birding I was just asking about in Costa Rica. But I'm always open to other ideas and adding to my never ending list of places to go and things to do haha

In Costa Rica specifically: La Selva Biological Station; La Paz Waterfall Gardens; Carara National Park and the Tarcoles River; Jaco; San Isidro de General; Bosque del Tolomuco; Los Quetzales National Park; Scarlet Macaw Sanctuary in Puntarenas. We've heard great things about Monteverde, Costa Rica but haven't been there yet.
As for other places to add to your list that were fantastic for birding and wildlife: Ecuador; Thailand; South Africa; Panama and Eastern Australia to name a few that gave us a lot of birds for the effort. We'll be posting photos from those trips as we get to them. In the US we recommend Southern Texas and Magee Marsh in Ohio both during migration.
