Making a Meteorite Ring With Glow Resin Liner

  • In today's video, Patrick Adair designs a meteorite ring with a custom glowing resin cast liner. The green glow liner replaces the traditional carbon fiber liner. This accents the exotic nature of the meteorite with a unique glowing accent. The resin is hand casted by Patrick allowing it to be the perfect formula of glow and daytime color.

I was thinking the same thing. Recast them in a clear resin and make a ring out of that. Could be really cool. You could even use multiple colors of threads

Have you tried etching prior to putting a resin liner? The semi-transparent appearance of the resin may show the meteorite lines on the inside too, which may look nice. Just a thought. Looks badass!

I don't know how well it would work but if you hung a ring at an angle so that it is only partially dipped into the acid you could get a really cool finish with part of it etched and part of it still flat metallic.

    Hi Patrick,
Your work is amazing but with this Ring isn`t there an issue with the light absorbtion because the glowing part is covered by the finger so it can`t reach out to the light well enough.

Have you ever considered doing a controlled etch? Instead of dipping the entire ring in acid maybe you could suspend the ring by a wire and add drops/lines of acid to control the etch to make some sort of design. I don't know what kind of time commitment that would require or other difficulties but I just thought I would put the idea out there. Good work on this ring, it looks fantastic.

Patrick, An Idea. Try carving or tamping designs into the outer surface and filling the channels with clear glow resin. The polished glossy resin itself would show out the design against the backdrop of the metal, then when it's charged it would really glow!

For your little lathe is that just a Harbour Freight Lathe? Also it might look cool to etch the meteorite before adding a more transparent resin layer on the inside so that you can see the etching through the resin.

    Beautiful work!
Thank you for sharing your techniques and process, very interesting.
I have a curious question regarding the meteorite... Have you ever taken a radiometer to it to see if it's radio-active? And if it is, how much and is it safe to wear?
I'm sure it's fine, but noticed that it's probably mostly iron, but could also contain other elements that may be radio-active or has absorbed enough whilst drifting in space prior to finding home on Earth that it emits some.
    Thanks again, Patrick!
