The lyrics are not "stories and faces dearly held", but, "hard-headed people raising hell." It sets the tone for this bittersweet song. Watering down lyrics due to religious objections is unprofessional. She sings this SO well it's a shame she didn't have the guts to preserve Webb's song intact.

I agree with the previous comment. Artists who are singing Professionally for money should not do their own adaptations unless they preface it verbally or in print prior to singing it. Amy Grant's religious sentiments got in the way. I am a Christian but I think Amy Grant's strength has been in her religious music. She obviously thinks she might offend some Christians if she sings the original using the word "hell". So sad that she is swayed by her fans, Christian faith, popularity and her desire to sing this wonderful song. I also think she has a nice voice, but not excellant, just a personal preference I guess but see what you think. Listen to the full unaltered version by 3 people not afraid to sing the original version- Nancy Griffith, Glen Campbell with Jimmy Webb, and Jimmy Webb himself. I think Jesus would say singing the altered version without a preface to the version being an adaptation is a lie.

I agree with the previous comment. Artists who are singing Professionally for money should not do their own adaptations unless they preface it verbally or in print prior to singing it. Amy Grant's religious sentiments got in the way. I am a Christian but I think Amy Grant's strength has been in her religious music. She obviously thinks she might offend some Christians if she sings the original using the word "hell". So sad that she is swayed by her fans, Christian faith, popularity and her desire to sing this wonderful song. I also think she has a nice voice, but not excellant, just a personal preference I guess but see what you think. Listen to the full unaltered version by 3 people not afraid to sing the original version- Nancy Griffith, Glen Campbell with Jimmy Webb, and Jimmy Webb himself. I think Jesus would say singing the altered version without a preface to the version being an adaptation is a lie.

Oct 10 1975 After My Brother died at 10 I was 13, I Was So Alone and Lost My Best friend for life, he was My Life and Partner of a lot of ideas/Creativity.. The rest of them where we Lived Just Bullied US BIG TIME, with abuse.. I Felt like I Failed HIM Cause I Could not Protect him that day, and because of that I wish it was me that die so he could Live,, I Felt Frozen..and the Bullying never Stopped but got worst if that was possible.,
Mercy and Grace is what she sings about ....from a very human perspective. She is a big comfort. I suspect everyone on this page feels a bit like me...from the heart. I'm here living in Australia, a man in his forties just feeling like he was 18 yesterday still listening to Amy for the first time. I am married and have been a christian since I was 16. I've struggled with depression ... bad depression in fact for so long. Surely I am not the only one? "If these walls could speak" Indeed.

I understand loving Nanci's version. For me, though, having first heard Amy sing this in 1988 on her Lead Me On album, this will always be the best version. I think Amy was the first one to record it.

Do you guys ever doubt your walk and God. Do you ever doubt his goodness? Sometimes lately I just feel like God is a big huge puppeteer pulling cosmic strings. Amy knows how I feel in "Faithless Heart"...I know her feart. For mine is the same. Why would God create man knowing he would fall and why would he make an angel named Lucifer knowing he would be cast down taking 1/3 of the angels with him. Why all this struggling. Since it cost him his son. Sorry for the rabbit trail from Amy.

I do welcome everyone's comments to me...in fact I almost even plead for them. I am a Christian angry and a bit lost in my faith right now. I just wonder if there are others on her who struggle and fail and get so confused with their walk like me. Amy has been a light to me when I first became a Christian. But Christ says to me" What is that to you, Carly?" In fact I'm jealous of her. I wish I could have met married someone like her even. Thougths welcomed greatly to me.

As you Talk about your Great Grand Mother. ..Back When I was Younger Still Living in Brooklynn Park, a Strange event, Happened, Well My Grandfather Gifford Arntson, While living in a apartment, As My Dad Roger G Arntson told me, his dad Gifford ha been Pronounced Dead 3 Different Days, Even one time he was placed in a BLACK Body Bag and Zipped up, He released all his body Fluid And stuff, Well he came back Breathing all 3 times before leaving his apartment..Around The same time, I Was 15 Years old, I would go to the farm with my dad, him saying his Red Convertible Mustang was Stolen from him 3 Times, Every time it was found it was repainted every time, Once blue, (a I Meat Shelly Miller She Had The Same Mustang, Dab Cranston From Distronics had one too, ....Remember when I got kicked out From Janes cause Kenny Wanted me to give my only car 1998 Black Sunfire to Kayla Jane and Kenny s Daughter, Cause he claimed I Owed him. about $245.00, Well it Started, First I pulled up in the drive way and i was on Mainly on the dirt, But I was a Inch on the edge on the grass to the right, Well Kenny Really Yelled at me like it was the end of the world, so I Straightened it out, anyway he asked me what is wrong with my Car, I Told him it Was Not Running Right From The Last time it Was Suposed to be repaired, (Kenny Knew A Guy Rate out of Town Down S65 to the right up a hill, Kenny Took My Car There, He Came back to the house and said that the Serpentine Belt needed to be replaced, ,, when it was done kenny picked up the car after a week, and said he fixed it but kept it awhile to drive it and make sure it was running ok.. Kenny Gave me a Receipt From the repair that he him self paid for, About Around over $200, So I Wrote him a check I think, But Yes I Paid Him,, anyways I Got in my Car I and drove it and it sounded like Crap and now Rattling, So He took it over there again and brought it back, and said that I need a Tension Pin Replaced, (Note I thought you only do this with a timing belt), So He Told me Where to Drop the car back off, This house was so bad it Smelt/Dirty like i never seen before and Horders big time with no space and a large dog in bad shape..Kenny Brought me back to his house,, When Down he picked it up and paid for it and brought me back another invoice, But this time I did not pay, Why?? got back in my car and it was running even Worst, every time it went in it was more Destoryed,, anyway Back to Getting off the inch of green yard..I got out of the car, he asked what wrong with my Sunfire, and why have I not Paid him, I said cause it is still running like crap, and i am tired of paying and taking my car in for repair that does not get fix, I Was Not to happy about my car but Calm..anyways He told me I might as well give my car to Kayla his Daughter cause she needs a Car, And I still owe Him Money, Like $245.00. I said NO.. REMEMBER WHEN I SAY NO....He wanted to leave Janessa and I Without any Wheels to get around to Doctor or School ect..to be helpless,, He was all ready pist about a inch on th lawn,, keep in mind everyone there that has trucks cars ect, all part directly on the whole lawn..So Ya A little Confused at this point..anyways, He was Pist, and told me that I was Kicked out because I would not give Kayla My Car, and that I needed to pay him,, So I Told Him what about the $1000.00 I Borrowed You and Jane To Get Your Truck Back That was concidered terroristic Theat, when he tried to take out my Green car as I Caught him as I was out side before i got the black sunfire,, He was a crazy person as Jane just stood and watched, He never went near her, But she Watched Calmly, He drove around the drive a mad man, He parked in front of the sidewalk to the house, Jane is just on the other side of the porch just watching Than He got out of his truck and Reached the back of his tool chest of his black Truck Grabbed A Hammer, came up the side walk, at this point I went into the house, Do not know were shawn was, but Kalya was Crying bad, I told her do not look and I Shut The Curtains, She Freaked, Tim (Janes Son) Called 911, His Best Friend Chad Next door the Policeman, They went to school together, After Tim Called He Grabbed 3 Softball bats out of the closet that I did not no they were there, (Note 2 of them Disapeared from My Bedroom That I Brought From TX, He Picked out the I believe my Black and Gold Bat End Loaded, He went outside to meet kenny on the sidewalk, anyway Tim Stopped Kenny, Kenny then went nuts again around the drive way, and ran into the left garage door and destroyed it, Jane made it sound like he was after her the whole Time,, He was not, She did not run from him but stayed outside, Note, She has Told me More Then Once He would never hurt her, but then I would SAy, But its ok to Hurt Me, Beating me by Jorden, Kenny and Jane, Like Kidnapping me to force me to go with them agaisnt my will, like a rolled up grappy carpet.that had a bat taken to it,,anyway, Kenny went to jail so Im told, Lost Truck,,Janes borrowed 1000 to get Truck Back,,.and needed me as a witness, Get to Court and Jane and Kenny told me to sit in the Hall, They went in court room, Tim her son never came or even was ask to, as I sit there Tired I was going to Tell the truth,, Will They came out and said court was done and Kenny gets TRuck Back, They Never used Tim or me as Witness, Without Witness How could he get off and truck back on that kind of charge,,even Chad The Police Officer never Showed up, Up Jane and Kenny Strange Right, Makes me Wonder what the case was about... Back to Sunfire he wanted me to give to Kayla, Anyways, With all the abuse and Possible Rape and sexual asault, I was so pisted that no matter what happened to me,,,, i was going to in my mine beat the shit out of him, by first getting nose to nose just screeming at him, well what about the 1000 you guys owe me, he said nothing and janes got between us and i stoped,, later she back him up by saying he never knew about the 1000 for his court case,, if he did not not know then what court case did my 1000 go for?????

Go Figure,, I Do Know Whle living in Brooklyn Park I Always Wanted a Red MUSTANG, But never got,, Years later they all did, Also Jeff Johnson, and Judy, Jeff had one in one of his open buildings that also was his Brothers, ???Where are they getting all these cars off the same, if not that black Truck, Also Jeff Johnson, Bought Judy Golden a Really Nice Brand New White Conv MUSTANG, It is like they say they have no money but buy Spendy cars and trucks, I know once when with Jeff walker I was going to get one in TX, but the insurance was going to be more then the car payment, cause it is a sports cars, and I had Really good insurance
