Fuel strategy is all part of it. Logano and several others were able to make one less pipt stop and that was the difference. It helps that Joey is real good at it.
Talk about a dichotomy of highs and lows in the last week, for Joey. Leaves the track last week outside the cut line and out of the run for the championship. Then hears the news a few hours later that he’s back in the chase for the cup. He shows up this week to Las Vegas and gets points in the first two stages, but it’s not a dominant car. He wasn’t too happy with the way the 22 car was feeling at the beginning of the third stage, and then a very timely caution comes out barely in the zone of the max fuel mileage of the car. The team gets a decent set of adjustments applied, and that set Joey up to do what Joey does best. This lets him run just hard enough to maintain a good position, but to also maximize fuel economy. What a race, what a week.
Logano has always been great at doing these things. a great call from his crew chief.bell had the dominant car,but we all can names many races where the dominant car didn't win
Yep! Larson and Hamlin for example. If Larson doesn't get his laps back he finishes in the thirties and would be closer to about 15 points above the cut. Now, he can still have a bad race and still make it. Hamlin somehow pulled a top 10 out of his @ss. He looked terrible. There was one point where Jimmy Johnson passed him for like 26 or 27th place on pure speed. That 11 team has just had too many races this season where they have been completely off. Also, look at the last round at the oval where Joey Logano gets crap for not being a great road course racer. He got a ton of stage points and had a good finish. If he just had an average race even with Bowman's disqualification, Bowman probably would have still beat logano
As. Joey fan let me correct you Kenny. He stayed up in the top 5 top 10 all day until 3 stage. Another correction- this is Joey’s 4th win at Vegas. Won Vegas in 22 to Championship. In 2018 Joey won Martinsville to go on to his 1st Championship!!
He didn’t miss the other wins. He was pointing out, that with each championship, he won @ Vegas. That’s because that win gives the 22, 3 wks to a prepare & plan for the final race. The next 2 races, they can test strategies, w/o having to worry about where they finish.
absolutely and people say about his points. if ur still racing points throughtout the season and it isnt win and your in snd u worry about points then they wouldnt take the risks they do after they win one amd no they are in the chase cause that point race wins and stage wins are more important cause they start your points in. the chase not your reg points so they run the season differently now!
Anyone of these drivers can win with the fastest car but a team win is my favorite type of race. Paul Wolfe heart must have been pounding like he was dealt a royal flush when the 20 pitted and Joey spotter did an excellent job. Blaney never would have helped Logano if he hadnt hit the wall so Kenny is right, it was just luck that happened.Congrats team 22
I can see a pattern, It is mostly Hendrick vs Gibbs by the end of the season then Penske came running down and taking it all like in the previous 2 season with the next gen
It was exciting. Great strategy that they worked perfectly. The decision to go from fuel saving mode to full throttle, and pass Suarez was timed perfectly.
Joey has learned the art of going fast by going slow - managing the throttle by avoiding using the brakes and allowing coasting and gently applying the throttle over and over again until he needs to start pushing things. As someone who practices smart throttle application on the real roads and gets upwards of 7 mpgs more than highway ratings on my own car, it is not difficult. You just have to let the other clowns beat you to the stop light or to think they've won the race by pulling away from the stoplight quickly. And I don't even hypermile. I just treat the accelerator like there is a raw egg in shell under my accelerator foot.
Im from oklahoma so im pulling for bell. But joey is great. penske is a great team their drivers carry themselves in a different way than any other team.
Im just mad that Haley's crew chief said he was good on fuel, but then they still pit. I almost won a bunch of money with him in the top 10 lol. Still a good race. I've been watching the in-car cams and listening to the radio broadcast since I dont have TV, and I love it. Seeing out the windshield instead of an overhead view really shows a better perspective of what's actually happening i think
From now forward it’s ‘Lucky Logano’. At the end of last week he wasn’t even in the round of 8, now he’s in the final 4. I thought when he made the 8 what luck, and if he makes the 4 his nickname should be Lucky Logano , well he did it . 🏆 That’s my man. Do I like the play off system, No, Larson or Redick would/should probably be champion this year but it’s all about making the final 4 and how you finish the last race. But if Lucky Logano wins another championship I’ll take it , that’s the rules.
Well, the 48 team cheated again - just like they did when James Mae Johnson was driving and earning and being penalized 14 times for cheating. Karma payback.
yes but people arguing about points is stupid because its win and your in so the points dont mstter till the chase and if u get a win u go for the stage wins and wins because those points u take with u in the chase not your reg points as long as u have a win u take those chances becsuse they help your chances in the chase why would u worry about the reg points when they dont matter anymore. u might think not but it actually makes races more exciting cause u have people taking bigger risks because wins matter for those who have and dont have wins. look at the advantage larson, bell and byron has now because of the points from wins
In terms of the teammates working together. We saw something like that earlier this year with Joe Gibbs cars at gateway. I think it was Bell and truex working together. We also saw this last year with Reddick and Wallace. If I remember correctly Bubba was a few laps down but had new tires late in the race and he was pushing Reddick. I'm surprised we don't see more of this 😅
Logano has always been the fuel mileage expert. He perfected coasting with his engine off during caution flags, only starting it to keep up, then shut it off again. There are no rules against it! Most everyone does it now. Saves a lot of fuel.
I loved the finish of that race. I'm not illegal fan. I was just happy to see a more natural finish instead of overtime where someone gets crashed on a restart or something dumb happens. From Belle running one second faster and gaining like crazy to Ryan Blaney pushing his teammate and helping them pass Suarez. Those last several laps were thrilling to me. On that graphic with the racetrack showing the dots following each other, you would think there was absolutely no way that Bell get to him. He did. Joey Logano is like a cockroach. He just somehow survives and keeps going
This was an exciting race. Bell had the dominant car, but dominant cars are afraid to take risks. If Bell had stayed out like Logano, he likely would have finished ahead of Logano. But that's risky, because a caution could have ruined that strategy and turned it into a bad finish for Bell. Coming in for fuel was the safe thing for Bell to do, but that doesn't make it a winning play every time.
Well my thoughts are, if Hendrick would have appeal the weight requirement with the parts coming off the car and mind you here were parts of the car when the 48 made that huge jump, Joey would not be in the final 4
Steve L was spot on with when Bell would catch Joey and he said the second to last lap…. Bell I feel is second to Larson on wheeling a car…. No one has the right to pick apart on Bells minor mistakes coming through the field bc he is a boss
Media said everyone was afraid of what Joey could do if he got in the round of 8! Fear confirmed!!!! lol Nice job Joey!
Joey is the man!!! Great race and great call by Joey's crew chief...
Joey Lagano is a boss!
Happy for Joey. Nice job on win 120 Kenny!
Joey in it to win it!! Have love him and am a fan for many years. Go get em, Hugs from Barbara.
Those Penske guys are closers .They get the job done at the end of the day.

Kenny, this was an exciting race today.
I like the suspense of fuel mileage races
It’s referred to as Team Penske, for a reason
Can we also give credit to how cool that Pennzoil car looks. Give me an old-school vibe.
Paul Wolfe and Joey Logano ran a great race and a perfect finish! Love it or hate it they are moving on!
That was an awesome race Larson also recovered really well all things considered
