Each new model is less reliable, more expensive to buy,and more expensive to run ,then the earlier model. That's my experienced I worked in transport for thirty five years.
It will be a period of significant change in the motor industry with the phase-out of petrol and diesel engines. I am sure there will be more turbulence to come.
That dash with lack of proper buttons would drive me mad. Trying to adjust while on the move will be a nightmare.
I will stick with my previous model. Looks nice fhough from the outside, thats it.
I've had mine a month and would swap back to the old custom immediately , tech is absolute nonsense , all driver settings have to be reset each time, to have no stays on rear doors is bordering on stupid , mine has a square steering wheel who knows why, far more noisy than old model , seems lower and the cab doors don't close due to air trapped in cab , not for me and I have had transits every year sing 1982 😢
Sorry to hear that. Sounds like they have made a bit of a shed. Hopefully they will improve the software and it should update over the air. I agree about the door hinges.
Mine is a base van so maybe the higher spec models will be better 👍
I had the old version and i love it! ordered a new one in march last year and got it two weeks ago, it is awfull! I hate it. i spent more then 100k on extra options and its not worth it at all. Will ask the seller to take it back. it has so many errors all the time and it feels low budget, electronics is slo and full of errors. miss my old van //Simon in sweden
ohh and fuel consumption is always over 1 litre/10km
Awd diesel 170hp version
@@sharkbayboards Yep first Transit I don’t like 👍
Our company have had 1 just over a month and it’s decently good except things reset every time. Although when on a journey the maps will loose signal and takes ages to get that signal back.
Glad you are enjoying it. I still get software issues with my 2022 Custom.
100% designed for amazon drivers not trades. That side step is pants as well as the interior and still can’t load a sheet standing up
I agree, the side step will be a bit of a pain. You will get a sheet standing in a L2 (LWB) though.
Wasnt keen on last custom as the wind caught the drivers door and pushed it round and into front wing.hopefully that problem is resolved
I have seen this happen on a few vans. The tale-tale signs are usually a bent wing by the door.
Still no upgraded locks or security!
I don't really like how almost everything is controlled through the computer screen.
It means that you have to stop, in order to change settings.
There's something to be said for keeping a lot of things as simple physical switches or controls, especially when you're focus should be on the road.
I liked the operation of the controls but I agree. My 2020 Custom screen sometimes freezes so that would leave you without any climate control. It could be a big problem. Mark.
@@WhiteboxUK yes, indeed.
Computers are always having problems, and I am always wary of things that are electrical in a vehicle.
It just means you're an old fart who know nothing about technology
I see they have copied the Austin Allegro square steering wheel. I guess the designers are too young to remember how well that went down. Seems a step backward in quality with this model. They have cheaped out with no buttons for the heater controls, that would drive me mad. Also the thing about not being able to get 8x4 sheets in upright anymore, the old transits were smaller but were bigger inside.
😆. Yeh, bring back the old designs! At least it’s not like the Vauxhall Nova with an offset steering wheel 😆.
Yep. All a cost cutting exercise. 😞
my 2019 170hp transit - failed alternator at 80k, 125k the engine wet belt failed which took out my brakes on the motorway (vacuum pump is driven by wet belt). poorly built money pit that now costs a fortune. Waiting for the next repair (new engine has thrown its drive belts) so I can get rid. Landrover defender hardtop is to be picked up on Friday. Never, Never, Never will have a Ford again
That sounds like a nightmare mate. Was the wet belt replaced before 125k? I have heard of them falling much earlier and people recommending they are changed at 90k
@@WhiteboxUKo
Have them still using the wet belt or have they gone back to a chain
Wet belt remains but toughened to give less chance of snapping and degrading
Yes I believe they are still using the 2.0L EcoBlue 'Panther' engine but with the upgraded belt. Thanks Billy and Barry for contributing. Mark.
Just change the belt change it halfway through its suggested life £700 iir alot cheaper than a engine if out of warranty
Who told you that bollocks? Mine just went not even two years old. Who ever thought it was a good idea is mental. @@barrytemple808
The belts not really the problem its the extended service intervals, 30,000mile oil changes and 100,000 for a belt is not a good idea.
I just made a hole in my racking for the door stays
I've just had a 1 hour test driver of the 'NEW' Transit custom, Australian customer. Overall? I am disappointed. I praised the last model, and hoped this one would solve the few issues. For Euro readers, we only get basically 2 trim levels, the 'Van' and the Sport. Both are high specced compared to what you would get in Europe. This is to minimise the stock that needs to be catered for in a relatively small market. Some of my notes may only be relevant to the local market.
The Good:
- Drivers seat is much improved, the old one was garbage, the new one just feels supportive. It is also lower to the floor. and feels more car rather than van like.
- Barn doors now do not have protruding.
- The stupid half glass side windows have been replaced with a full window.
- Roof height lowered to help fit into low car parks, this is great, but obviously the internal height has also reduced. I suspect this is also because of the AWD option available in Europe.
- Column mounted auto selector save space.
- LED headlights standard (new)
- Keyless Start Standard (new)
- Automatic climate control standard (new)
The Bad:, the list is long.
- The instrument cluster is complicated looking and hard to read, its angle isn't towards the driver, its pointed down in comparison to your eyes.
- Square steering wheel, like all square steering wheels is shit.
- Brake pedal way so spongee and soft, I guess that could have been this particular vehicle.
- Van has keyless push button start but NO buttons on any of the external door handles. You have to pull out the fob to lock and unlock. Absolute insanity. That was one feature I was looking forward to. Having you hands full of crap and needing to dig into a pocket isn't good.
- Flip up roof racks were standard in the Australian delivered cars all the way back to 2015, now you have to pay $2000!
- I was told no rear lift gate option until the MY24 models. This has always been a popular option in Australia for trades vans, keeps the sun and rain off. whist working in the back. Out vans are always glazed in the rear too, so gives better rear viability.
- Dual sliding doors is an option. Again, many other competitors don't even offer one door, another $1000 option.
- Has plastic wheel caps rather than silver steel wheels. These are work vehicles. Silver steel wheels just work, they tried this before with one model year of the previous gen and soon switched back.
- Driving position HAS improved from last gen, but its not SUV good like a Toyota Hi-Ace or Hyundai Staria. The steering wheel reach doesn't come close enough either.
- Passenger seat still sucks. Its a van seat. Competitors have a full bucket just like the driver. Some of us actually drive long distances with a passenger.
- Pressing the park button in the auto DOESN"T engage the electronic hand brake, its another button to press right in the middle of the dash! Why would you have the van in park and the park brake off? When selecting drive, it will release the park brake, but its hesitant to do so.
- Just doesn't drive as nice as the previous model. The last model actually had alive steering for a commercial vehicle, this feels like a computer game.
- The thing as a whole doesn't feel as solid or well made as the last one, doors feel tinny.
Other notes,
- No more manual option for the Australian market, and this engine just doesn't have the right feel for an auto, and we get the the 2nd most powerful engine spec.
- No AWD option for Australia, sure it doesn't snow much, but driving off road for building sites and maintenance is common place.
I have waited a long time for this, I am not impressed Ford.
It's just been released in Australia the problem with it though it requires ad-blue which is $2/litre and is a 20-litre tank with 70 litres of diesel.
And why would you want a manual car for? if you're in it 10-12 hours a day and in traffic you don't want to be on and off the clutch all the time.
People will buy this as a courier van not just tradesman.
Ahh!One of those ruddy screens plonked on top the facia!
It didn’t feel too much different from the previous model.
It’s like an iPad , total overkill for a van which should be primarily for doing some graft
@@Monty-kr7py Just seems out of place in what is a working vehicle. I wonder how much abuse it'll be able to withstand in a builders vehicle, constantly full of dust and dirt....
Had a second look at one yesterday, build quality has dropped, definitely going flimsy, the fuel tank cover hinge arrangement is definitely gonna snap off
Some of it felt good quality but I agree some quality has dropped. I wonder what the VW version will be like? Definitely more expensive! Mark.
@@WhiteboxUKThe VW is a rebadged transit custom built by Ford alongside the transit
You need to upgrade your camera the picture quality is very low, I was drawn to this because of the model.
It was filmed in HD, but unfortunately, it was exported in 720p. We didn’t notice until it was uploaded, by then, it was too late 😣 . We will be more careful next time. Thanks for your interest. 👌🏻
My diesel engine siezed last week less than two years old. Waiting for a new engine from Ford. Could be 8-12 weeks. I want out. I’m going to buy a MAN TGE 180 4x4. The diesel is shite wet belt crap. The new PHEV is £750 plus vat per month. New MAN £550 with arguably a better engine, more power and AWD. no brainer for me.
Sorry to hear that. That’s not good news.
The new VW Crafter will be based on the Transit common platform, so I wonder whether the MAN will stay independent or follow VW?
I’m going 2023, so will have VW engine not wet belt. @@WhiteboxUK
The new Crafter will stay as a VW design and build, the same as the Caddy. The Transporter and Amarok are the only disasters that Ford are getting their grubby hands on !,a decision that will come back to haunt VW.
@@Metal05the current 2023 Transporter has a conventional cambelt that lasts 100,000 miles without issue.
So the new Transit connect is a VW Caddy common platform. I though that the new Crafter was going to be based on the Transit but cant find any info to support this.
The new Custum looks tiny and cheap next to the old ones.
The quality does feel like a downgrade
Feels like a step backwards not being able to stand a 8x4 up in the back - I recall Ford making a big deal about that with the mk6& mk7 transit saying they listened to trades ect. another small annoying custom feature- the rear rubber door seal being on the van as appose to to being on the rear doors like on previous transits mk7 backwards - it just catches the crap and tears loading
The rear door seal is a pain. You can stand a sheet up in an L2 Custom if needed. 👌🏻
What a bunch of negative idiotic comments
Had mine almost 2 weeks now. Same as on this vid. Love it. Solid as anything and drives like a High end SUV.
it’s a superb van. Love everything about it.
They are still nice to drive. Apart from a few items, I didn’t feel the quality had slipped that much. We will surely get some teething troubles as you always do with a new model. I am glad you are enjoying yours.
The only thing idiotic is you, thinking your opinion is more important than others, or it’s your first proper Van , ie not French ,either way it’s nothing special
nice one mark 👍
Thank you mate. 💪🏻
Great review. I've currently got one of these on hire as someone decided to drive in to the back of my VW T6. But give me a transporter or older shape transit any day, Not a fan
Thank you. Lets hope the new T7 is of better quality
The T7 is a rebadged transit custom that is built alongside the transit by ford. @WhiteboxUK
I wouldnt want the wet belt. Why oh why have they kept that.
They probably won’t spend any money on developing new diesel engines now. They won’t be able to sell them past 2035 so will be putting all of their efforts into alternative fuels. That's if current legislation stands. 😎
They’ll just spend stupid money replacing loads of engines rather than just developing a simple chain kit. 🤷🏼@@WhiteboxUK
I know, it's mad!
Great Thumbnail! *Totally not made by me*
Why thank you. And thanks for the great thumbnail.
Are they any more difficult for thieves to get into? That’s the most important thing.Basic functionality should be on buttons and dials.
I had a Renault upon which the display died, had the heating and whatnot been on that STUPID touchscreen I’d have been knackered.
Sadly not. We will be making some videos on van security soon.
You do have to spend extra on van security to protect your tools and equipment.
Yes the touchscreen could be an issue. Especially with the software issue we are currently seeing.
@@WhiteboxUK We should should be able to get basic things offered by the manufacturer. Those lock plates should be standard or a manufactured option.
No disrespect to Ford because in general they are a very sound and solid car maker and definitely know how to advertise.
But I get that Ford are trying to make the Transit much more like the VW Transporter - this is why they have asked the German company for their input.
The reason for this is the popularity of the Peugeot Expert and with that you can include a) Citroen Dispatch, b) Vauxhall Vivaro and c) the Toyota Proace.
But it's very much the Peugeot that are selling more than Citroen, Vauxhall or Toyota.
You see the Royal Mail, Police Scotland and many others using the Peugeot Expert these days and of course Peugeot took their lead off VW when re-styling the Expert and it would seem that they have found a winner, that's why many other Van makes have followed suit.
That's a good insight, Neil. Thank you.
It will be interesting to see how this sells compared to its predecessor. The last Custom outsold every other van on the market. At one point it was the best selling vehicle on the road. It is a tough act to follow.
Can't believe they still got that wet timing bet
I can't imagine they will change it now as all the focus is on renewable energy
@@WhiteboxUK Save those pennies from your 1% fuel efficiency gain for when you need to replace the engine.
really also on 170nhp diesel? dont think that is wet belt no?
@@alessandro-on9zz defo a wet belt. Same as the last one
Wet Belt jelly lock garbage
At least when it does get nicked due to the unreliability the thief wont get far
Yeh security is a big issue. I don’t think any of the manufacturers will sort this. We need to be looking at additional security to secure our livelihoods.
minuet 10.1
Looks like a transit custom only smaller, cheaper, flimsier, same crappy engine, and more expensive. I'll pass.
Unless you have one you can't say that, you don't know. Every vehicle in the world is more expensive than before so that's irrelevant and you need to go for the more powerful engine, my 170 has never let me down ever in 7 years.
I think the load volume is the same, if not more. It seems all vans have a cheaper feel due to cost and weight reduction. We will have to wait and see if this one stands up to the test of time.
@@kevinhurst2527 I can say that, actually. I’ve been driving multitudes of types and sizes vans since 1997 so I think I have a pretty good idea. I have owned and operated as well as hired, borrowed, and contracted so have seen them running and broken, maintenance them myself and had them in workshops. Speaking to mechanics about the different vehicles is also a freat insight since they work on them day in, day out. The consensus is that Ford vans haven’t ’t been good since they moved production to Turkey. I’ve owned Ford before then and since and can agree. I’ve currently got a transit Custom and although I like the space and comfort of the cabin, the overall quality just isn’t there. I’ll be going back to VW next I think or else just go cheaper. I’m not a fan of overpaying for something.

Yeh, that happens a lot with my current Custom. 😆
I will keep to my van wet belt engines are crap.
Sounds like a lot of people have had problems. I haven’t had any with mine.
My wet belt transit still on original belt 189k miles no issues.
I would look at getting that changed ASAP. For the sake of £700. it could save you £££££££
Not if it’s got that shite engine in it.
We will be making a video on wet belts and how to avoid expensive engine damage. It is due to be released at the end of March. Stay tuned.
Still got that stupid wet belt... it’s a no from me
👍
It sounds like a big put off for so many people.
Fords solution to prolonging the wet belt is special oil and oil changes every 10,000 miles.
@@jasoneldridge4738 I was told by a Ford mechanic, that belt failures are caused by any unburnt diesel being dumped into the engine oil. (This is standard practice for modern diesel engines) The belts are designed to be proof against engine oil but unfortuanely breakdown under diesel.
Belt isn't the problem, driver error.
@@stuartcraigon2003 There is a lot a van owner can do to help the situation. Such as regular serving, including the optional interim service.
Better getting a transporter before they turn into ford !!
I have a few customers that have done just that.

The new VW is a rebadged transit custom
