Got one sitting on my deck table top gobbling up sunflowers seed and peanuts. He/She's been around about two years now. Surprising because we have hawks and foxes and coyotes and stuff.
I have a miniature red squirrel in my yard in Toronto Canada. It’s the size of a chipmunk. We mainly have black squirrels here , and fewer grey as they aren’t as assertive as the black squirrels. I’ve never seen a red one before .
👍 #906 Hello friend, I love those wonderful opening scenes showing the stunning landscape and the wonderful Caledonian Pine forests. I find Red Squirrels one of the most enjoyable mammals there is to watch in nature. I have just spent 5 full days filming Red Squirrels in a small UK stronghold and there was never a dull moment. They just don't seem to stop for more than a few seconds and are so funny and cute. I love the Squirrel leaping from tree to tree and the footage showing them trot and hop along fallen trees is fabulous! . It was well worth all your efforts out in nature and the editing involved to produce this video and thank you for sharing 👍◕‿◕
The red squirrel is locally extinct in Southern England except for the Isle of Wight (15 x 20 miles), off the Hampshire coast, the Scilly Isles, 30 miles SW of Cornwall, and the "cause celebre" of Brownsea Island. Brownsea Island measures 1 x 2 miles and is in Poole Harbour, Dorset. In those cases, the grey squirrels have not crossed the water.
@@povilasvoveris2594 the grey squirrel , which was brought here from North America is to blame … they carry a disease that kills the native Uk red squirrel..
Only in Britain and Ireland. In the rest of Europe the red squirrel is by far the most common species. I live in Germany and we have dozens of them in our village near a forest, I’ve never seen a grey squirrel in my entire life, I thought they only live in North America.
I call them orange squirrels because they look orange. The ones I see in my yard don't have the fur sticking out the top of their ears like the one in the video. They're very hyperactive.
The red squirrel is the major cause of power outages on Islesboro. They climb power poles and short out wiring resulting in blowing fuses. This will disrupt power to one of more houses. It saves the transformers from exploding. On 8-28-2020 at 8:30 am we heard an explosion which sounded like a gun shot. At the same time our power went off. We assumed that out transformer had made the noise but out neighbors still had power. We called Central Maine Power and they were already aware of the outage but it only affected two houses. CMP keeps a truck on Islesboro but they had to send over a worker from the mainland. Fred, the worker, was on vacation, but came over anyway. He had the correct address but was at the wrong house. I found him and directed him to my house one block away. Fred soon located the problem. The noise we heard was caused by a red squirrel shorting out our power line and blowing the fuse to our house and one neighbor’s house. Our neighbor had workers at his house and needed power for his nail gun. Fred had the power back on in 15 minutes but it was three house from the time the power went out until it was restored. We were lucky that CMP sent someone over at all. We could have existed with our 5K generator but our neighbor was too far ways for us to extend a power cable to him.
I live in the south of England and I’ve never seen a live red squirrel in my life (I’m 32). I’ve been to the Isle of Wight several times and never even seen them there! I’m going to purposely go to the countryside there look the next time I go!
How did they get that shot from inside the hole in the tree? And they knew ahead of time that the squirrel would look in that particular hole so they were ready for the shot?
They probably film for hours then compile enough interesting footage to make a decent video. And I'm guessing they have tiny cameras hidden all over the place? Maybe, idk.
Sir Klopp the pine marten I believe would do the job, it evolved alongside the red so the reds smaller size would make them harder to get than a grey for a pine marten. it is a native species too
That is correct. Restoring the pine marten population in the UK will also help restore the red squirrel. Pine marten are often associated with predation on red squirrel but they mostly catch easier prey. You can't beat nature :) No need for introduction of others. That is the biggest mistake.
But why?? What makes the grey squirrels evil pests and red ones innocent poor angels in your opinion? They’re the same bloody animal. I just don’t get this illogical hatred.
Liusila grey squirrels are a non native species and they have pushed red squirrels out of their native range in lowland britain. In reality many people especially in Scotland want to see red squirrels but if they are going to see red squirrels they need to prevent grey squirrels from spreading north otherwise the red squirrel will go extinct in Britain.
Red squirrel are cuttest thing i have ever seen 🥹sadly now they are endangered all because of so called animal rights releasing grey squirrel into red squirrel Territories

It was hilarious when it’s face showed up at the hole entrance. It looked gigantic

It’s so sad to see the red squirrel being very close to extinction.
why?
Only in some regions. On the continental Europe it's common and thriving.
