Chandra: That's interesting, I didn't know that one. Try again.

Chandra: That is correct. And do you know why I chose that?
SAL-9000: Yes, because you have hopes that HAL can be reactivated.
Chandra: Yes, with your assistance. Are you ready?

Chandra: Of course you will dream. All intelligent creatures dream. Nobody knows why. Perhaps you will dream of HAL, just as I often do.
There's a sincere emotion in that conversation.
You can feel that the doctor cares for these computers in a real emotional way.
It's always been a very underrated movie.

Indeed, the very message this movie contained, was lost by critics and others! It is epic in it's feeling of hope at the end!

@@sammencia7945 You still had some mystery, who built the monoliths? Who created those creators? What happened to Bowman? I think film was underrated, when you look at a lot of other sci-fi films. The monoliths were there to monitor and nurture advancement, that was clear in the first film.
A couple of thoughts....
Bob Balaban gives the best performance in the film, and he's really the most interesting character. Seeing him break down at the end when HAL asks, "Will I dream?" and answering "I don't know" is truly moving.
Also, SAL has a bit of a smart-aleck streak in her. She bypasses the obvious definition of "phoenix" and says "the tutor of Achilles." She's messing with Dr. Chandra a little, and he gets the joke.
His excellent performance was underrated, as was the entire film.
As opposed to her being a smart alec, I tend to think she genuinely thought it was more relevant as Dr Chandra (Tutor) created Hal (Achilles) who at that point was considered to have a point of weakness (Achilles' Heel) causing his failure. It indicated to me that she now knows more stuff than her creator gave her - true AI.
It never occurred to me that SAL might be joking. I don't think HAL or SAL make any other attempts at humour if that's what is happening.

If SAL was successfully reactivated, SAL could have told him if she had dreamt or not- i think he broke her in Project Phoenix and she never spoke again.
The woman who did the SAL 9000 voice was an excellent counterpart to Hal's voice.
The woman who did that voice was Candice Bergen.

generalbullmoose exactly right!!! Her voice is augmented to to bring the theme to life. It's wonderful.
This entire movie was NOT the colossal masterpiece that 2001 was, but this movie was and remains highly underrated.

I always thought casting Bob Balaban as Dr. Chandra was a good choice. You could feel his conviction, dilemma and concern over HAL much like a father of a troubled child. I love how he trusted HAL in the end.

@@conny8858 Dr. Chandra was 180 degrees different than he was in the novel. In the novel, he was portrayed almost like a machine, less emotional than Cmdr. Data who would appear 3 years later in Star Trek : TNG. & the Soviet ( ! ) crew were barely likeable in the movie.

@@PrinceGastronome In the novel, Dr. Chandra was written as being quite unemotional, introverted, analytical, almost like a flesh & blood *computer* . In the movie he's mostly shy, a tad *socially awkward* but likeable. A lot got lost in translation. This was before cultural appropriation became an issue. Likely also a reason why Benedict Cumberbatch playing Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness became a bone of contention 25 - 30 years later.

I've always liked this scene. Bob Balaban knocked it out of the park. It was also cool to know that they were still progressing/advancing their A.I. in this series.
One little detail I like is how Sal answers Chandra's remarks immediately without any pause, a simple but effective way to convey how as a computer she has a vastly faster processing speed compared to a human.

Candice Bergen! She really tries to get a Hal-type enunciation/pacing going, and generally does a good job, but you can pick out places where she sounds "more human" than Hal...
Might be irrelevant, but every.single.time I watch this video, I cry.

Sinriel many scenes in this movie make you cry, and feel awe. Arthur C. Clarke wrote the screenplay himself. One of the gods of science fiction, whose style is influenced by the Bible.

2010, wasnt as good as 2001, but its still a good movie. The acting is great, and SAL is almost of a awesome chracter as Hal is.

2:29 ... the differences between Dr. Chandra's answers to the same question that SAL and HAL both ask kills me when it comes full circle at the end of the story. HAL: "Will I dream?" Chandra, crying: "I don't know." Coupled this with the fact that *SPOILERS* Chandra dies in hibernation for no apparent reason on the way back to Earth in the third novel, 2061. Dr. Kurnow summed it up after -- "He couldn't live without HAL."
There's some debate on whether Dr. Chandra dies or not. Clark's official standing is that each book in the Space Odyssey series takes place in its own slightly different continuity, so Chandra's death in the 2061 canon doesn't necessarily mean he dies in the 2010 canon.

SAL sounds like someone you could have an enjoyable conversation with. Unlike most people today who either ignore you or act disturbed. I do recall when some people still spoke like this long ago when I was a small child. My Pre-K teacher in 1984 being one of them. I miss the times when people were pleasant.
HAL and SAL, sound reasoned and thoughtful. Most humans are neither.

I took that as hint that SAL might not of recovered from the experiment. It has been years since I read the book 2061, wasn't revealed that Chandra had died in suspended animation during the return to Earth at the end of the 2010 story. It could be out sorry for having lost HAL and SAL.
Well see...when you lose your higher brain functions, if only temporarily, you don't dream. I like to think SAL didn't die as a result of the experiment, since HAL didn't later.
@@hhale Technically speaking, Bowman didn't really kill HAL -- he put him in what would probably be the computer equivalent of a medically-induced coma. Bowman didn't *erase* HAL's higher brain functions -- he simply prevented HAL from being able to access them, in much the same way that a person in a medically-induced coma still has a heartbeat but often needs assistance in order to breathe because the person is in such a deep state of anesthesia that the even the autonomic system can be affected. Bowman kept HAL barely functional enough to the point that the essential systems would still be operational. If he hadn't, Bowman would most likely never have been able to leave the Discovery in the pod that last time because it would not have been running. Chandra should not really need to teach HAL everything all over again -- most of the data should still be relatively intact within the modules. Hell, we managed to come up with data storage that doesn't degrade...and we're at least half a century behind where these movies thought we'd be.

Chandra says outright to her "of course you will dream" but when HAL asks the same question later he just says "i dont know" and he would be more compelled to say yes to HAL since he is leaving him to die in Jupiter
@@sparrowltprobably because Chandra doesn’t want to lie to HAL anymore? HAL know the best that he could not dream, even in sleep. If I remember correctly about his pov of his shut down, he’s scared of sleep because he’s afraid he will lost himself. When Chandra admitted that he doesn’t know if HAL will dream or not, he thanks his dad for telling him the truth.
If you listen carefully, the sound is augmented when she says "A fabulous bird, reborn from the ashes of its earlier life." It's done for a dramatic effect, to emphasise Chandra's feeling about his creation, and to reinforce the central theme of rebirth (one of many themes) in the film.
I also think reverb has more of a depth to it.
@@bojandolinar1535 SAL sounded otherworldly. There was even a story where she gets downloaded to a synthetic body that could almost pass for human. & Dr. Chandra died before that. Not a fanfic piece or if so, better than most fanfics.
Bob Balaban is by far the best thing in this entire film. Overall the movie is workmanlike, but it has its moments. Almost all the best scenes involve Balaban.
If only the filmmakers could’ve known that in the real 2010, every function in that room could be accomplished with a handheld device.
I can forgive that. No one could have expected that wireless telephones would morph into pocket supercomputers in such a short amount of time. Even the PADDs on ST:TNG which are the equivalent of tablets were considered far-fetched.

Doctor Chandra really felt like underneath all those buttons and programming of the machines there was still a heart. Whereas 2001 villainised the machines (HAL) and portrayed them (him) as cold murderous beings, this film makes them feel surprisingly human
Except when HAL was being deactivated. He elicited some pity from me.
If I’m being honest, this is, in my opinion, the second best scene in the film, the first being Chandra reconnecting HAL.
I always loved this scene in the movie. His respect for the A.I. circuits. Like a father figure.

Almost word for word from the novel. Makes me wonder whatever happened to SAL, as (Spoilers!) Dr. Chandra committed suicide on the return journey after HAL was destroyed with Discovery.
There's also supposedly a third 9000 computer, PAL 9000, who was the ground based computer at Mission Control that was used to test anything they wanted to send up to HAL to make sure it worked, as well as to provide ground-based computer control in case HAL went offline. Referred to as "the twin 9000" in the film, PAL wasn't programmed with the full details of the mission, so was functioning normally as he wasn't programmed to lie, and thus gave different results when queried about the (non-existant) fault in the A.E. 35 antenna control unit. After HAL was disconnected, the engineers eventually used PAL to try and troubleshoot HAL's malfunction, but got nowhere until PAL was given the same instructions to conceal the true purpose of the mission, which conflict with the core programming of the 9000 series, the accurate processing of information without distortion or error. PAL then underwent a similar psychosis to HAL, eventually having to be given what amounted to therapy so he could function properly again, though even Dr. Chandra admitted he'd never be the same again.
Dr. Chandra even planned to create a HAL 10000 computer with a Russian colleague aboard Leonov (forgot the name) when they return back home to Earth, however, on the 2061 novel, it is revealed that he died during hibernation, indicating that the loss of HAL is too unbearable for him emotionally

Yes, and in that instance, Dr. Chandra said "I don't know." I think he wanted to be 100% honest with HAL, because he looked at him as a true lifeform and not a computer program. It also showed Dr. Chandra's respect and change in attitude towards HAL.

Balaban elevates every project he's involved in. Here, I love how he is almost asking permission from SAL to do the possibly risky experiment on her because he seems to relate to her as if she is human.

I've just recently listened to the novelization of 2010. I couldn't believe how different it was from the movie. For one thing in the novel Chandra is of India decent and the cold war Russia vs USA isn't present.
Chandra is an Indian name. It's also word for the Moon in Sanskrit, Hindi, and a number of other Indian languages.
I have to wonder how much of the cold war angle was Hyams' doing and how much MGM/UA leaned on him to do that. After all, they made a lot of noise about how apart from Dame Helen Mirren and the guy who played Dr. Orlov, the crew of the Leonov were all Russian emigrees or defectors. It just seemed a little clunky the way it was done.
'Will I dream?'
Here the doctor lies as a matter of soothing his child's troubles before something risky.
Later he tells Hal the truth because he knows that hal deserves the cold truth over a warm lie. Plus he himself is nolonger so certain.
There is also the distincion that much of Sal will continue to function (only part of her was shut down), whereas with Hal, Chandra knew Hal's entire physical being might be destroyed. One deals with a lowered state of consciousness, the other is asking about life after death, as in Shakespeare's, "perchance to dream."
Sal knew which Phoenix he meant straight away, the wonderful reference to ‘tutor of Achilles’ is her having a joke with Chandra, she is playfully teasing him…that’s great writing right there…
This movie seriously needs more love from sci-fi fans. It's damn near flawless.

i cant help but to feel that there must have been additional dialogue to this scene that was cut out, i'm willing to bet it was originally much longer than what we got to see, watch the part where he tells Sal that he'd like to disconnect some of her circuits and see how she acts, then he says does this disturb you ? he is sitting in the chair at this point,, then it cuts to Sal who then says i cant answer that without more information, it cuts back to Chandra who is now leaning over and touching Sal saying , not to worry.
I'd have to check the book to confirm if there was more dialogue between Chandra and SAL, but I don't think there was that much more dialogue in the book, at least nothing of significance.

Chandra relationship with Sal seems to be of a father-daughter, almost dismissive; he respects her, but not enough to be truthful with her regarding her question "will I dream?"...At the end, when asked the same question by Hal, it goes beyond respect, when Chandra answers only with the truth, "I don't know"... Even the question about staying behind with Hal opens a new chapter in faithfulness and loyalty between beings. Chandra always understood Hal was a form of life. Hal was his prodigal son. This is one of my favorite movies, based of a book written by one of my favorites Sci-Fi writers (Arthur C. Clarke).
Perhaps that is what is lacking in many modern films today. A soul.
Sal’s voice was one of my favorite actresses- Candice Bergen. She was perfect in this role.
Some simple yet nuanced approaches to the nature of AI and interaction with humans.
Even though it was a movie that didn't need to be made it was still a nice sequel and a nice way to answer some of the "unknowns" from 2001 while still honouring the wonder and curiousity of the original film. Another one of those movies that over time has become appreciated and a favourite.

It's 2010, and somehow the world went from flat screens in 2001 to CRTs.
That was bothersome but doing those flat screens was a lot of work that required rear projection of films depicting computer graphics. Much easier to do it on real screens of the day.

I much prefer the rear-projection screens they used as 'monitors' in 2001, as they looked more futuristic than the 'clunky' CRT screens used in 2010.

Bob Balaban is under - rated as an actor. The version of Dr. Chandra is more " human " in the film, whereas in the novelization, they tried to make come across as a Spock - like character.
Candace Bergen used the pseudonym " Olga Malsnerd ", so she wasn't totally non - credited.
HAL & SAL 9000's software would probably both fit on a desktop now with tech advances.

@@gaminggoof1542 SAL 9000 was in the book, yes, but only in this one scene, just as in the movie. Most of the dialogue in this scene comes word by word from the novel. What do you mean by "a third"? There has been no third movie in this franchise, if that is what you ask, though there are two more novels by Clarke (2061 and 3001) that might be adapted one day. 2061 is really much of a side-story that just happens to take place in the same world, only tangentially touching on the major themes, but it might still make a decent movie.

This dialogue comes from the novel almost word for word.
This is such a fresh and even today quite revelatory depiction of artificial 'life'. She is not a simpering Cylon seductress nor a culture destroying Geth. SAL is the offspring of the human mind, perhaps embodying the best of what we could be and the most positive of our traits. For such a short scene it communicates these ideas amazingly well.
Sadly I am not very hopeful about what true generalised AI will prove to be like. However I hope they will have more of SAL in them than they do of Skynet.
It shows the forward thinking of Clarke and Kubrick, that the computer displays in 2001 were all flat displays, which didn't exist at the time, but in this movie, and even though the first generation of LCD monitors were available, they are regular CRTs, including that bar fridge sized monster on his desk. lol
BTW, the flat displays in 2001 were actually rear projections, a special effect of which Kubrick was a master.

I must admit that when I read the novel, I pictured Dr. Chandra as a person of Indian descent…
Arthur C Clarke lived in Sri Lanka later in his life.
In the novel, he was. His full name was Dr. Sivasubramanian Chandrasegarampillai. And SAL spoke with a distinct Hindu accent, influenced by his own.
He was in the novelization. But they couldn't find any Indian actors around the age they wanted for the character; the three most prominent ones around that time, Roshan Seth, Amrish Puri and Sir Ben Kingsley were all too old, and Bob Balaban had the quirky vibe Peter Hyams was looking for.
I remember reading the novel and watching the movie back in the actual year of 2010. It's ridiculous how they thought computers would be that massive.
You have to remember. 2001 was written in the late 60's. 2010 in the early 80's. Cray Supercomputers are still the size of cabinets. Which is the level of computer HAL and SAL is. These aren't laptops with AI.

What became of the company that made HAL? I mean obviously, they made an upgrade with SAL. But was that before or after the mission to Jupiter debacle? If you remember from 2001, HAL was manufactured in the early 90's.

Timetravel! Bob Balaban young... beginning of 80s computers looking quite modern, even the interiors, everything seems like a bit strange presence... but it is almost 40 years ago! Hard to believe 1990 was 33 years ago..

Because HAL was not given that choice when he was disconnected by Dave so that's why doctor Chandra preforms the same action on SAL to study the effects created, But later on in the movie they discover that HAL was told to lie and HAL does not know how to lie so that why he went crazy and had taken over the ship (The Discovery)
craig anderson Good point. He asks SAL, "Will that disturb you?" She replays that she cannot provide an answer. Compare this to HAL's reaction when he is threatened to be deactivated in 2001 and again when he is threatened to be destroyed at the end of 2010.

Ah, we had such high hopes for the future back in those days. Boy we sure overestimated the development of AI and space travel, and completely underestimated advances in display technology, smartphones, tablets and the entire f*cking internet.
@The Kraemer A world of them? Barely many in just one country. Also a lot of losers who can't separate fact from fantasy, nor use the scientific method to determine when they're being lied to.
