1/ *Spiritual instinct* - This is just the most mature Alcest album with the seamless mix of metal and atmospheric groove (shoegaze); it is also their darkest album, inspired by Neige's feelings at the time 2/ *Ecailles de lune* - This is historically their most important album and still one of the very best, especially the first 3 songs 3/ *Les Voyages de l'âme* - A beautiful and mature album in the continuation of *Ecailles de lune* 4/ *Les Chants de l’aurore* - Their latest 2024 album is excellent, like a brighter and happier *Spiritual instinct* 5/ *Kodama* - Following *Shelter,* Alcest was back reuniting the smooth with the heavy; but for me, this album lacks the so elegant melodies of the top 4 albums above, but is a clear prelude to *Spiritual instinct* 6/ *Souvenirs d'un autre monde* - The dreamy album which created blackgaze (with EP Le Secret and the split with Les Discrets); more shoegaze than metal and no growls! 7/ *Shelter* - Shoegaze and the least personal Alcest album, with a lot of external influence; yet, the song Délivrance is perfect to end a concert (see Hellfest 2022) 8/ *EPs* - Le Secret and the split with Les Discrets, both historically considered among the first blackgaze attempts Let me conclude with their best live available on TH-cam, at Hellfest in 2022: th-cam.com/video/tXIICacooes/w-d-xo.html
Neige has said that many of his songs are influenced by memories from his childhood and the debut is heavily based around that. I've been an Alcest fan from the start, I bought the debut purely because I was intrigued by the cover and loved it.
Agree with you. Alcest's last two albums are the best. And if you like alcest i think you should check this out - Drudkh - handful of stars (also Roman Saenko(Drudkh) and Neige(Alcest) have side project called Old Silver Key) Cheers
I think every approach towards the style has been executed flawlessly however Le secret and Shelter always sticked out to me as the most special. I reckon you hit the nail on the head about Kodama and with then idea of balance, particularly in Eclosion where you get the harsh and the soft at one. Great video!
Thanks for the kind words! I must confess, I havent actually listened to Le Secret yet :o I was focusing on the studio albums. I'll have to give it a listen on your recommendation!
