@@friendlytravelsp5516 In the 60s, the KGB did some fascinating psychological experiments. They learned that if you bombard the human subjects with fear messages nonstop, in two months or less most of the subjects are completely brainwashed to believe a false message(i.e. a lie). To the point that no amount of clear, correct, accurate information (i.e. the truth) they are shown, to the contrary, can change their mind.

THAT concrete pouring to the cellar and leveling it was worth at least 1,000 thumbs up or more :) That is a true art and one of those jobs people take for granted and have no idea how hard it is to do. Hard hard work. Love the pantry always love tours. I also stored a lot more things this year than my normal storage. Butternut squash is my favorite too. We have lovely local farms that I support every year to top up my garden crops. I went crazy this year with squash. But it feels good. Also stocked up on local honeys and maple syrup. We are fortunate to have local crops of that too and I love to support them. I also canned a lot more than normal, and I am now fermenting. But I did not realize you could ferment beets. I am going to try that really soon.

My Mom got tired of trying to get the men in the family to build us a cellar...so she put the kids to work digging a large cellar between some fruit trees. The guys keep telling her NOT a good place, but ... that just makes Mom determined. She called for cement truck after she had the wall "studs" or forms in place. Unfortunately...Mom had missed a few things in her 1970 Mother Earth magazine plans...and we had a cellar with a Mom and 4 kids trying to smooth the sides and the roof and well lets just say we had a very unique cellar. The side studs were not all up and down but some almost diagonal cause they fell over. Don't ask me how...I was just a kid being used as child labor. LOL. The floor was fairly smooth...but the top of the ceiling was a tall bald mans nightmare. And Mom thought she might as well use ALL of the cement she paid for...and added another ft on top of the cellar which meant we had a concrete bunker thing...and it was lumpy and cement dries really fast in 100 degrees...so we had the lumpiest bumpiest ugly patio looking thing sitting between the peach tree and lilac bush. Too uneven to sit and sun in a lounge chair...LOL! Dad came home and was NOT amused at what we did. WE were so proud of our cellar cause now we had a cool place to sleep thru the tornado warnings. I ended up buying the house when adult and I fixed it up as a root cellar with ventilation and better stairway access. Worked great even with crooked studs and lumpy top. Hubby thought we needed a mock machine gun turret on top to do it justice.

I love your root cellar with the concrete floor seems to make a lot of sense as far as controlling moisture. We have a dirt floor in our root cellar which we covered with a large sheet of visqueen plastic and then put maybe two inches of stones over that. Our humidity level still runs around 85 to 90% down there even though the temperature is very stable around 70° here in the summertime in Georgia. Is there anything I can do to drop that humidity. I was looking at your video about using salt in a pillowcase and wondered how that worked out for you and what kind of salt you used?

Been a "little" busy the last few months since Mr. B passed on to the next stage of existence.
Was glad to go back in the video history to see how your Root Cellar has evolved.
My son, Derek, and me have been evolving the design of the house & garage to be built at the farm, too.
Since we live in an area where tornados come thru once every 5-8 years, we have decided to build & place the Root Cellar/Storm Shelter under the Breezeway between the house & garage with an entrance from the house basement and a Bilco door from the back vegetable garden area.
In preparation for building with ICF's Derek is working for a Concrete Company to become familiar with terms & techniques for working with the concrete construction crews.
P.S. My MIL had a bench seat box that she used for storing her potatoes in the basement. She kept the potatoes in apple bushel baskets in the bench box.

Wow, I bet Stacy just loves having all that storafe space for y'alls food and future harvests. Looks amazing. I love the toy chest idea, I grabbed an old potato and onion standing box at goodwill last year and I love it. God bless!

I always enjoy watching skilled workers do their job. No wasted movements, don't stop to gab, etc. Of course, it's working cement, you don't have time to do anything but "go". I've worked a lot of cement when I was younger on barns, etc., couldn't do it now because I couldn't keep up with the other workers! Getting old is a blessing and a pain (don't HAVE to do the concrete work anymore, but I miss being able to).

Because of the musty smell, I've never wanted one even though I know the benefits. But now after seeing yours with the concrete floors....I WANT ONE 😁

FYI you can get small pallets 24" x 24" from some of the building stores to keep your buckets off of the cement.

Hey! Great video showing your root cellar. I just finished building an earthbag gravel floor root cellar! I won't be using it until next summer when I hope to build my house over it. If not a house next year I will at least put my ger (yurt) on the concrete slab over the entrance. I hope not to have difficulty with moisture since I am in Mongolia (maybe you noticed "ger" earlier) and the cellar is located in an area of a bout 13 inches of annual rainfall. I have closed up the entrance and covered up the slab for the winter so I hope there will be no bad surprises for me next spring when I open it up to air out. I am in the midst of making a few videos of the build. These will be the first major videos on my youtube channel so I need to come up with a decent name etc. Well, thanks for the information and inspiration!

My dad built a root cellar for mom 30 plus years ago. It was dug into the ground like the one you built but had a flat roof on the top exposed to the outdoors. He planned to build a canning kitchen on the top one day. The entry door was on the side of the of the dirt mound that was back field in. You went thru two sets of doors to get to where the food was. They used it for years, they even hung the deer meat for a couple days in there to cure. It burnt in 2014, she has a new canning kitchen but never rebuilt the cellar. The one you guys built is beautiful, impressive concrete guys. Thanks for showing us around. It was very inspiring.❤️

I love seeing other peoples' storage spaces! Stacy- I don't know if someone has mentioned it or not- but the apple in the potatoes- you need to keep them as far apart from one another as possible! It will have the opposite effect than you are looking. They release ethylene gas that encourages ripening (I always put an apple in with my green tomatoes to ripen them)- but always store your roots away from your fruits! :) Just FYI- would hate to see you lose those potatoes. Thanks for sharing your space! :)

My son said he didn't like beets - until he had them oven roasted. Then he had them the next day warmed up with balsamic vinegar and honey. He's a believer now. 🙂 I think the only vegetable I don't like is lima beans. It's more of a texture thing. To me, they're chalky.😝

Hi! My Grandparents wrapped their apples individually in newspaper. Just a piece big enough to cover up apple. They stayed fresh most of the winter in their basement. Just FYI. Maybe you could try it to stop apples from gassing off so much and contaminating other produce?
