  • Two things: First, had I bothered to let the waffles cool off a few minutes they would've come right out. Second, towards the end of the video I was paying more attention to my waffle than the camera so I didn't notice it was out of frame. Sorry about that.

      I can't remember if I broke it in before I sent it, probably not. If so, don't be disappointed if the first couple waffles don't come off short of using dynamite. And like I mentioned in the description, let them cool off a couple of minutes first and they come off much easier once it's been used a bit.

    Cook bacon on the waffle iron and then cook your waffles. This eliminates heat differences in the iron and greases the waffle iron for waffles. Thats how my grandmother and mother used to do

    This was great! I'd love to have an old cook stove like that! Especially for the winter months. I own and still use a circa 1880's Griswold "The American" waffle iron 100% complete with the original wood peg handles in each plate and it's matching cradle ring spinner. You are right about the waffles made in old iron, it makes the best waffles I've ever had! I love it, and I try to imagine all the families that it could have served in it's time. 👍

    Another benefit of a wood stove waffle iron is that any overflow will fall directly into the fire instead of all over my counters!
    I got the chance to cook on an outdoor, wood-fired stove this past november. Each morning it was freezing cold out and starting that fire was a bit of a pain, but for whatever reason anything cooked on it came out 100x better than stuff I'd make at home, pancakes being the absolute best I've ever had.

      Wood does cook different, it's a more evenly distributed, radiant heat than gas or electric.

    Hello from our NH farm. I have a 1908 Griswold #7. I am grateful that mine has dual spring coil handles. Found it in VT in mint condition to use on our 1930 Home Comfort kitchen wood stove. I had to restore our Great Uncle's wood stove, but not the waffle iron. It was worth buying. Someone had used it, until it was aged to glossy perfection. Antique dealers here usually want the #8 Griswold, so I lucked out.

    Going to look at a Wagner waffle iron for sale later today, so fingers crossed I have my first cast iron waffle maker to maybe complete the wood stove cooking dream one day. Your two are super freaking cool. I can only hope to find one of those one day.

    Thank you for the demonstration. Bloody waffles not cooperating though.
    I brought mine out the other day after several years. The first two were messed up but the rest were very nice. Mine is a Taylor Forbes from Guelph Canada. Wooden handles and it has a ball pivot mechanism for turning. I'll have to search out the history, like you have for yours, that's a very nice touch. Cheers.

    I restored a beautiful 1908 Gris. Greased that baby up just like you, with a natural paint brush and butter. I got lucky... wife and kid sitting there in anticipation, and the waffles popped right out.

    Thank you for the realistic video, Mudbrooker. Remember how you recommended cooking potatoes to season iron because of the starch? I wonder if you cooked some hash browns with the waffle iron a few times if that would help them. Anyway, I've always wanted an old cast iron waffle iron. I'll resume looking when yard sales/estate sales resume some day. 👍🏼

    • @TheMudbrooker
      @TheMudbrooker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I couldn't notice about the video but when I use my cast iron waffle maker and when I use a spray of some type or oil or butter on the grade I always make sure that it's extra hot and that the oil actually stems before I put the batter on and I learned the hard way that that's what it takes to keep it from sticking and waffles will come out almost perfect every time

    Love it. I’m tempted to get one like this. Unfortunately I don’t have the fitting stove.
    Though I did just acquire a modern semi-pro Belgian waffle iron which also makes brilliant waffles. So I’m pretty good on the waffle front. But the experience with an antique is of course something else.

    • @TheMudbrooker

    You are so knowledgeable about cast iron, I enjoy all of the history of your treasures. I just purchased my first cast iron dutch oven from Lodge, it says that it is pre-seasoned. I haven't used it yet. What would you recommend, should I accept their seasoning or redo it ? I want to start out right.

    • @TheMudbrooker
      @TheMudbrooker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The factory seasoning from Lodge is usually good. Just wash it good with soap an water, dry it by warming it up on the stove and rub it down with a light coat of whatever fat or oil you usually use. Do that every time you use it and you'll be good to go.

    Just discovered you. Thanks for being there for us. I have a high frame Griswold. Why did they make a high frame and a low frame?? Was the high frame made for 'modern' stoves ?? Thanks again.

    • @TheMudbrooker
      @TheMudbrooker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the high base allowed you to flip the iron on a gas stove without lifting it up.

    Could you use these on a regular stove?

    • @TheMudbrooker
      @TheMudbrooker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The way these really old ones are designed they would be hard to flip over on a regular stove, you'd have to lift the whole base and iron to turn it over, but most waffle irons made after about 1890 have handles on them and can be used easily on gas or electric stoves.
