This deck seems crazy with something like Beseech the mirror as an extra 4 copies of whatever you need. Plus with all the tokens made by things like investigator and spyglass siren you can kinda bargain for free
@@AgentFransisdefinitely a consideration but vein ripper is in there too, and is cast with minimal issue. The treasures also help smooth it out too. Still, it will probably feel bad on those times you can’t cast it
This deck, if nothing else, is proof of this actually being an awesome standard format... The fact that you can have success with a panharmonicon style card in a mid-range shell (AKA a 4 mana do nothing), is really really cool
Thats like not true tho? He says it after beating a popular meta deck, and esper midrange is one of the decks considered tier one in current standard. Other vids where he says it, it's usually against scam in a modern video.
If he beats any of Esper Midrange, Azorius Control, 4 color legends, or Aftermath Nissa, I’d say he has grounds to say he beat the best deck in standard because those are all tier 1 decks right now. They were all in the Pro Tour top 8.
@@chris7372 it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't an upgrade for the dimir rogues list I built around it. Maybe it works better with more of the newer cards. If I could stick 2 of them, it was a win. Double cloning grizzly bears would make them good lmao
I've built my version of the deck on archidekt and it seems fun. I don't know I'd play it on arena though. I went izzet with terror of the peaks and clones. There's also the miner that I'd a 3 drop that gets you a treasure. My version is definitely more jank though.
I've been brewing this in mono blue for standard, getting consistent draws off of loan shark and bounces from psychic pickpocket is really satisfying! Plus you can use visage bandit for easier copycombos. I slam all my blue rogues in there, but most of the deck's engine is uncommons.
Awesome deck Seth! The biggest brain play in that game 3 against monoR 29:00 is to use the first kitesail to hit the siren for a treasure like you did, the second kitesail hits nothing and the third turns the second kitesail in to a treasure. That way if you drew a land like you did you'd have had 2 mana to Go For the Throat your own kitesail to gain 6 from the triple Ripper 😄
I played a Necroduality deck back when it first dropped. A few tips for this style deck. Greedy freebooter, with a sac outlet, is a must. Getting the copy effect up and running quickly is key. With the enchantment triggering on cast, using a few spells to get creatures back in hand from discard could actually be worth the slot.
Idea for Against the Odds: Return the Favor copying the trigger of Arcane Bombardment, if you have a copy of Return the Favor and a treasure making spell under it (Flick a Coin/Big Score) you can go infinite and draw your deck. Urabrask or Quintorius turn your looped Bombardment spells into damage.
43:25 Not to be discounted there is the value of mercenaries in combination with evasion like flying - they were 100% dead, but even if it was a turn out of play and they had their three blockers, you can add 4 power to your flyer and go around.
This deck is sweet... but now I'm wishing that there were a non-singleton format where we could play the Prowl cards from Lorwyn alongside Double Down without it being embarrassingly slow. A doubled-up Morsel Theft or Noggin Whack would be such a punch in the gut...
As several times you mention Doubling Down on a Double Down and not being able to play Legends, I would love to see this deck "Doubled Down" with the addition of Mirror Box, rebuilt around Legends.
If you're looking for a fun combo, I drafted a Grixis list with this and Rakdos, the Muscle. Rakdos specifically mentions sacrificing another creature, so when both he and the cast copy end up on the battlefield, the state-based action of saccing one triggers him; it's hilarious.
So the way you had game on the Grixis deck is that you could use all 4 of the tokens from Hellspur to pump Vein Ripper making him a 10/5, then you just attack with all remaining creatures. He can only block 1 creature, so you are atleast hitting for 4 on the ground for a total of 14 damage when he only had 11 health.
I think this deck has opportunity to splash legends though even with double down. IE: Vadmir, plus Tinybones Joins Up, plus double down, just casting Vadmir will give him two +1/+1 counters because one Vadmir will see two Tinybones triggers before legend rule kicks in correct? Same is true for the new Gisa etc. Doubling down Kitesail is also two crimes (for two treasures ideally) which can double trigger Kaervick with your two extra treasures to sneak a couple cut downs, a go for the throat, board wipe again, reanimate creatures whatever, will also double trigger any other non once per turn triggers you have. Pair this with Magda even, you could create some crazy ramp and payoffs/'storm off' outlaws and crime post turn 4. Slow but Tinybones Joins Up, Pickpocket, Vadmir, Kaervick, Preacher, Gix maybe even give you turn 1, 2, 3 value. Deep Cavern Bats possibly to slow the opponent down more and make them remove a 1/1 before you cast a legend. Grind the game to turn 5 and hopefully steal it away with double down value.
My initial thought about Double Down was basically "ah, so you plot an outlaw on turn 2 and 3 and then drop Double Down and cast both of them and get a huge board" but it turns out the outlwas you can plot on turn 2 and 3 are actually pretty bad... that does make it a bit more awkward to play and i suddenly understand why i haven't seen more of it.
That oppo in match 4 had a real weird deck.. trying to play 3 colours with colourless lands, playing agro creatures but blast zone and mirrex? How on earth does that deck ever function?
Yeah. I didn't know this until just now. And I have a pirates deck with larcenist. *facepalm* Granted, my pirates deck almost always has treasures or maps to use, so I dont know how much that would have altered my past play
Honestly I don't feel like thunder junction is a strong set. The big score has some solid cards, but most of them feel better in larger formats and still not as strong as lost caverns or any of the older standard sets.
In what way? Double down works on cast while Rakdos returns to the battlefield. And the damage on death only works for legendaries, of which this deck has none.
@@AgentFransis Even one copy of Double Down with Rakdos Joins Up means you're either getting a crime trigger from every legendary outlaw you cast (since the death trigger from Rakdos Joins Up is targeted) or your opponent is having to spend more resources to keep a particular legendary from sticking. Wasn't thinking about it for this deck (since no legendaries), but it seems like it could be a fun brew.
Seth has betrayed the Stan-harmonicons. He avoided legends to get the value off the bodies but he didn’t think about the value of doubling etb/ltb effects for legendary outlaws
1:16:57 close games between two Black midrange decks, thus removing the fun of an interactive game by putting it in a pile of miserable one tone decks. Rotation needed to happen, Gix and Sheoldred needed to be banned.
Next time take note of the deliberate comedic bugle sound to accompany the "bugler rat". Which isn't to say that Seth doesn't routinely mispronounce shit. He do. But "Bugler" is a thing.
I could tell you from having played the Zombie version of this anyone who wants to: stick to Commander for 'Double Down". There's just not enough that discounts enchantments while also playing into your theme in blue. It's fun don't get me wrong but other than a handful of free activations it's not gonna get there in best of three.
this seems kinda fun too bad the deck cost on playing anything but brawl on arena is too much also double down with legends still might be good... they almost all have an effect that will go off twice on entering
Seth at the beginning of each match: “uh oh, our opponent is playing a really good deck, this may be a bad matchup for us…”
Wins anyway
This deck seems crazy with something like Beseech the mirror as an extra 4 copies of whatever you need. Plus with all the tokens made by things like investigator and spyglass siren you can kinda bargain for free

Seth always complaining about Snarlands... also Seth keeps playing tapped fastlands almost everygame.
The arch priest reanimate creature with backup is so good. Because all the flying and haste
I think Hostile Investigator needs to trigger the discard on attacking in order to feel fully mythic. That'd work better with the name as well.
