We played this at Pasadena City College and with an Honor Concert Band in Fresno in the late 80's. The Colonel himself conducted us and I played the xylophone part with the flutes in the beginning. I remember first day of rehearsals with him at the helm after woodshedding our parts for a week only. I was so nervous playing my part by myself when he requested to hear certain parts separately- I never played under a Marine conductor before. He was straightforward and challenging and brought the best performance out of us. This piece is a very inspired magnum opus. Thank you Sir for making a better musician out of me.
It's a "fantasy-march" - It was commissioned directly by the President's Own Marine Band, that takes inspiration from the Marines Hymn, so it's tangentially a march.
