  • Episode 8 in this beginning series for pastels dives into Color Theory. Learning and understanding values of colors can make or break a painting. But how to turn colors into a gray value, and why beginners need to learn how gray values relate to the colors they want to use is important to making a painting in pastel or any media work properly. Color value is often a mystery to beginners and pastelist Avon Waters addresses the basics of how to develop the skill to look at colors and find their gray scale value equivalents.

Thanks, a lot of my videos will touch on values since I am a values painter.

Oh heck yeah I subscribed and next I'm watching the understanding the color wheel. I learned what that grayscale thing is for, what else does it do? I just learned how to make nice purples a couple years ago.

Great….I am helping people, I wonder sometimes, lol. The gray scale is used for lots of things but a future video will show how to use it to set up your colors in a tray or palette box.

Actually in another video you used the term colorist and I was about to google it because I'm not sure what it means but started watching this first. I like color but where I get tangled is when I want to use an unusual color lets say pink green and orange face, I think it's the value I have trouble with? If it's black and white I'm fine or regular normal colors I'm fine but I like paintings with wild colors but mine when I try everything is the same intensity is the only way I can describe it so it looks wrong.

I think you can solve the issue by setting up your palette into five values. Then work out of only 1-2 of the five zones that you have broken your color values into. You can place complementary colors next to one another and they will work so long as you use 2-4 analogous colors and their complements. My next video this weekend will address how to set up a palette into values
