Draft a good QB? Hasn't that been the Brown's plan for like the last 100 years? And THEN, when they FINALLY drafted a good QB -- they run him out of town so they can suddenly change strategy and make the worst trade in modern memory for a veteran QB with _a few_ off-field issues.

Baker was TERRIBLE in Cleveland. They had top 5 defense, top 5 O-line, a top 5 supporting cast of weapons to utilize at WR, TE, and RB and he still underperformed. It was not until he got canned off the panthers that he started playing good. Baker just took way longer to develop and the Browns bought into “Win NOW” instead of win in 5 years, cause they had been trying to win something for the last 20 already

In his first season as HC, Dan Campbell's record was 3-13-1. 2nd Season: 9-8. This season 14-2. Bill Belichick's first season record was 5-11. Very few Head Coaches of rebuilt teams turn things around after just one season. In my view, the losing record is not why Mayo got fired.

But they knew who he was when they hired him. He was green and the roster was terrible. Kraft and the NFL better hope who ever he hires next is able to win more than 3 or 4 games because if they aren't and they do not get fired after 1 year like Mayo did, that lawsuit Flores has is going to get a boost.

I understand the narrative of people saying Jerod’s firing was unfair to him, but when you have a chance to hire Mike Vrabel rather than wait for a rookie head coach to develop, seems like a no brainer. Especially given the potential of Drake maye. Give the young stud a proven head coach and go to work. No time to cry for Jerod Mayo, who genuinely hasn’t proven that he has what it takes during his first year

No, the hate for Mayo is warranted. What got me was: 1) Calling the team soft when he should be building the culture 2) Playing a most geriatric offensive scheme 3) Appearing to have zero passion as a coach on the sideline 4) Losing the #1 pick (turn that into three picks 🙄)
The whole front office of the Patriots need to be swept away, even the Krafts. This team is slowly becoming the Browns, but with a QB.

I am pretty sure ownership saw Mayo going on to talk shows after bad losses where he was smiling, goofing off, and having fun and got more and more frustrated as the wheels came off. He didn't seem to take the job very seriously when it comes to what us outsiders could see. He seemed to insult his own team more than anything. I believe that if he hadn't done the above he probably would still be employed even with a poor record.

I compare him to the most recent coach who undisputedly deserved 1 and done, Urban Meyer. and in comparing Jerod and Urban and asking the question "what mistakes did Urban make that I can confidently say Jerod didn't make?" the only answer that comes to mind is "well Jerod didn't kick nobody" and while that's good.....that's just not enough.

When it comes to the Jerod Mayo situation while I understand coaching is one of those positions that receives a lot of flack no matter whether it’s deserved or not, however, I feel like this is a bad move for the Kraft family & the Patriots. I say that because they put him in an unwinnable situation meaning there's only like 5 or 6 people worth anything & there was no way they were going to win their division.

    • @don_5283

He might have the potential to be a good coach, but he kept committing unforced errors in the media. It's not about the record; he is at the very least undercooked. This is why it's a good idea for a guy to spend a few years as a coordinator first, so he can learn the administration and diplomacy in a lower-pressure environment, before stepping up to be a head coach.
Give him a few years as a coordinator somewhere else, and see how he does, and if he picks up the diplomacy and administrative skills, and then maybe give him another shot at a head coaching job and see how that goes. This move, elevating a half-position coach directly to head coach is just baffling.

Browns should steal the Falcons playbook, sign a vet and draft a qb at #2. You buy the rook time, and can compete right away, while having the qb of the future in your building. Highly unlikely they will be in position to address the situation the following year, if so they're all fired. If not they're trading picks again to go get a guy, or playing FA vet qb game yearly like all those Colts teams did. Also this regime has yet to draft a qb they wanted outside of taking a flier. KS didnt pick Baker and neither did AB. IMO its their last chance to take a swing.

Everybody dogging Jerod Mayo, but no one is saying that one year, with a rookie QB and no WR talent, wasn't enough time for a fair evaluation. He most definitely wasn't the worse coach in the NFL. Rumors of him losing the locker room is the most concerning allegation if it is true and was the only thing to justify him getting fired with such a limited chance. Bill Belichick wouldn't and didnt do any better with what Jerod had to work with. Starting Maye wouldn't have changed a thing and some would argue, hindered his development behind that offensive line. I wouldn't expect anything less from Boston tho.
