My sweet peas are looking so much better at this stage, this year than they were last year and they are even better than the ones you buy as transplants in shops so I think this is going to be the method for me from now on.

How fantastic! I had no idea sweet peas could survive a British winter. I will definitely be planting some at the end of year just so I can see them with my own eyes. Absolutely amazing. And they look so healthy.

Me neither. I had so many seeds from a prior abundant crop that I thought, well really I can afford to lose some for experimentation purposes. Not only did I not lose them, I gained a massive advantage. Ha ha. Let me know how you get on when you have a go!!! & also what part of UK you are so we can compare results!!

@@JillBrethertonoh, you used your own seed! Then they were even hardier for your area. Good to know!

I’m in northern Midwest US and the temps have been abnormally above average the last two winters, but we get some extreme drops in temps along the way. I so want to grow SPs and will try this method. It is what I’ve known as winter sowing and love it as like you say it frees up time and space inside. Problem here is the temps as it creates too much heat too soon and like now we have lows of 12F at night 😮 we’ve been up to 20-30 degrees above normal since that 3rd week of subzero in Jan. It’s all reversed! Halloween was 36, thanksgiving 41 and Christmas 52!😮😮 Now we are going back to winter as it turns spring. It’s depressing, but we need it to cool down because our fruit buds are threatening to bloom too soon and like last year they froze May 25th with an unwarned freak freeze. Too much advanced growth can’t handle that and we had 90sF in May.
What I like about what you’ve done is to use a container so I can move it. This year I waited to put out winter sow containers and placed them on east side of house to move to south when conditions stabilize. Hoping to stave off early germination.
Never grew these and hope I’m successful. I think I will do this soon as was given some obelisks perfect for a few pots.
Thanks for the ideas!! 😊. Hope I can figure out where to place them as it can get hot here.

Oh I read this after I asked you what zone you were in. sweet peas are really hardy but you can also use a cloche to protect them from extremes. Yes grow them in containers. I do both containers and ground. then they’re portable. good luck with them. they’re easy once you get the knack of them and gorgeous too!

    • @JillBretherton

definitely give it a go. It is so much less faff than all the other methods. i can’t believe they survived all frosts and snow!!!

@@hungariancottageadventure77 No not at all. I just used my peas (collected from last 2 years) and chucked them in where I wanted them. it has been a wet spring so that has probably helped but I never have soaked sweet pead anyway and they have always grown for me.
