@@thenobrainfreak Yeah lol didn't even wake up till morning. It was lights out for me lol and the whole video had already played through. I just played back the parts I didn't see which relaxed me again in the morning :D
If anyone is wondering how this works, or if it is even real, I'll explain. The way a dynamic microphone (the most common type) works is the differences in air pressure caused by sound force a thin metal plate called the diaphragm to vibrate. A magnet picks this up because the distance from the diaphragm will alter the magnetic field of the magnet. The magnet has a wire wrapped around it, which picks up the change in the magnetic field and converts it to a fluctuating voltage. The way a typical speaker you'd find in a pair of headphones works, is a fluctuating voltage is inserted into a wire wrapped around a magnet. The change in voltage affects the magnetic field to become stronger or weaker, which pulls and pushes a diaphragm which in turn vibrates the air around it, causing sound. If you were paying attention, you might have noticed that both of these processes are exactly the same and use exactly the same components, just in reverse of eachother. So, if instead of sending sound in the form of fluctuating voltage to a speaker you listen to a change in voltage coming *from* the speaker, you have yourself a microphone. so yeah, you are hearing the headphones. This is a really clever idea for a video in my opinion, and I'm surprised how good it sounds. PS! if you are one of the many people replying saying they don't understand, basically a lot of microphones and speakers are made of almost exactly the same parts, you just use them backwards from eachother. A remarkably similar comparison you could make to this is how if you send electricity into a motor it spins, but if you spin a motor by hand it will put out electricity, which is how those torches with crank handles you find in gift shops work! also for those of you brave enough to read down this far, (firstly thank you for your interest and patience lol, but also) I'm pretty sure hooking up speakers backwards to use as microphones was a technique used in the cold war to bug people's hotel rooms...
that’s why i’m a little skeptical cause the magnets in a headphone driver are stronger than those in a microphone. and the diaphragm (depending on the mic being dynamic or condenser) are usually thinner in a mic. so either i completely underestimate the sensitivity of the drivers in headphones or i just don’t know what i’m talking about
@@Ebidle well I'd guess the stronger magnet and thicker diaphragm kind of compensate for eachother. I mean, it's not exactly as if it's a perfect mic, it's missing a lot of top end, but I'm pretty blown away by their performance too.
Honestly same. I'm quite sure it's because of the very fact that the speaker drivers are being used as mics. Being much much larger than any microphone, the headphone diaphragms have a different weighting, meaning their sensitivity to certain frequencies is different, and in my opinion, better. Plus, they're actually IN headphones! That also alters the frequency response to sound like.. well.. like it's coming straight from headphones!
