      Good torch and *SPARE* ... wise words indeed ...
      Like everyone else, gobsmacked, never knew this was there, lived in Sheffield all my life (OK, that bit is not true, only 1978 - 84), cracking piece of video, top marks to a classical hand-tooled Yorkshire madman of the first water...

      @@patrickdickinson6492 I thoroughly enjoyed this as the desert after my dinner and then just as the music started at the end , a storm was brewing here , becoming very dark with Thunder adding to the whole sense of drama after i had been thinking these tunnels really need to be in a movie , when i realized there had already been a movie with a tunnel system in it ... and a famous one at that : The Third Man with Orson Welles , Trevor Howard , and Joseph Cotten , under the city of Vienna .
      But Megatron is altogether something else ( ! ) overwhelming and really does deserve be in a movie .... a good one , like The Third Man .
      Thank you so much for this exploration ...i'm under the impression you were alone ... is this true ? Anything could have happened down there ; very brave you are and i just discovered your channel ; subbed now , of course .

    I've been in the Megatron four times in recent years. Its a good trip if you start in the Porter Brook around Endcliffe Park or Frog Walk at the entrance to the general cemetery as there are loads of different underground sections. You don't need a boat in the Megatron. We swam along it, to the weir, then slid down the weir and swam out into the River Don.It's only knee deep at the bottom of the weir, you wont go under the water although we didn't know that when we first did it. Cheers, Simon.

    • @patrickdickinson6492
      @patrickdickinson6492  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Simon yes I,be walked the full length of the Porter through all the culverts, I would not fancy wading through the deep part of Megatron when I went down in my dinghy it was 5 foot deep most of the way. At the bottom of the Weir there is a concrete shelf stuck out for 4 foot that's the shollow bit of water you mention after that it's 5 to 6 foot deep and when you cross the Don it gets to 8 foot in places. Still a great place to explore, all the best Pat

      Hi Patrick. We had wetsuits and it was fine. Me and my friend Neill did the whole Megatron swim, down the weir and out and across the Don in February this year when there was snow on the ground. We've had many years of caving experience. We're very used to being cold and wet. Good videos, thank you. Simon.

    This is probably the 3rd time I've watched this video (maybe even more since I showed it my Mother in law when we visited Sheffield last year). I cannot express how fascinated I am by it.
    Some 50 odd years ago, I went to school in Sheffield and remember very distinctly standing on the Blonk st bridge wondering what was in that culvert that the River Sheaf came out of and joined the River Don (I don't ever remember anything about the River Porter). If I had known what was just beyond, I might have been tempted to explore a bit, but being only 12 years old, I didn't know how to go about it. My family lived in Sheffield and Rotherham would have been mesmerized too!
    Thank you Patrick for exploring for us and putting it on TH-cam.

Keep them coming Patrick you are a star.

  • @whiteycantley

    Hi Patrick, I was one of the contractors working for Mowlems who did the flood alleviation scheme. Yes I know it flooded the station and surrounding areas and we got the blame ! The truth however is that we handed the control of the debris removal screens over to the Water Authority and they turned it off against our advice stating they would monitor it daily.........
    I was in charge of safety throughout the scheme walking those culverts 10 hours a day, lots of interesting items were found but mostly large grit stones of which were in there dozens.

    • @patrickdickinson6492
      @patrickdickinson6492  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is that the Denis removal screens at Granville roundabout, they might be in place but like you say you need continuous maintenance on culverts like these, alright cutting costs by ignoring things. Really enjoyed myself down there, amazing construction, thanks Pat

    • @whiteycantley
      @whiteycantley 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@patrickdickinson6492
      Yes the screens were placed in four places if I remember correctly, one in granville square, another next to the station car park and one near the bus hub , fourth one I cant remember.
      I worked on it just over a year, I used to have a half hour stop off in the cathedral as I called it at the end of the 3 tunnels near ponds forge. They emptied the pool one day and didn't tell us, it nearly swept two men and a dumper away 🤔
      The hidden infrastructure that most take for granted is a testament to the incredible skills of the Victorians. Not many have been through the culvert system and I dare say more people have climbed Everest, so were in a group of a privileged few.

    • @patrickdickinson6492
      @patrickdickinson6492  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@whiteycantley Hi Whitney the only screens still in place are the Granville Sq ones with a mechanical grab to clear the debris out. I think the other screens were removed after the 2096/7 flood's, when the screens probably got blocked with debris and caused more flooding. The cathedral is such a amazing price of construction, thanks to our Victorian craftsmen,nice to talk to you Pat

    I love the way Patrick says "it's just starting to rain" then goes on to explore a very large underground drain carrying a smallish river. I have to assume he knows what he's doing but the site of still green flood debris at roof level would have made me head for the closest exit even if I'd been brave enough to enter the drain in the first place.

    • @patrickdickinson6492
      @patrickdickinson6492  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi "When it rains keep out of drains" is a saying I follow, the rain forecast was only slight and felt very safe. Occasionally we get 24 \ 36 hours of rain and these can flood the culvert and leave the debris high up in the culverts, no way would I go near in those conditions, but light rain good forcast and I,am ok, thanks Pat
