  • We were inspired by the amazing catios and hen houses online to build this Rabbitatio for our beloved house rabbits. The Rabbitatio is filled with sunlight, fresh air, edible greens and herbs, and lots of fun activities. It's a safe place for our bunnies to enjoy the outdoors, and we love it too. All our rabbits are vaccinated against RHDV2.
    I'll be posting more videos from the Rabbitatio, including a construction/build video, so subscribe if you'd like to see more!

      I have four who use the Rabbitatio and they do an excellent job nomming down all the herb pots. That's why I have a total of 15 pots planted with herbs that I keep in constant rotation! Swapping them out gives the munched pots time to regrow! Even with four rabbits they have never come close to making a dent in the "living floor" -- first it was clover and then I changed it to fine fescue because the clover caused bladder sludge. They love the fine fescue too but it remains undamaged for the duration of the growing season.

    Beautiful! Just a word of caution, though. If this is window screening, the bunnies could very easily chew through it and be out in a heartbeat. Our screen doors don't last a day past re-screening. :(

    • @PunkRockFoxy
      @PunkRockFoxy  ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Oh dear, that is bad news about your screening! We put a clear plastic panel over the screen at the bottom of the screened door to protect the most vulnerable area. Other than that, the rest of the screening has endured (since 2017). None of the bunnies I've had in the Rabbitatio have paid any attention to the screen. I do believe you are correct though, heavy duty "pet screen" is the best to install when animals will be present.

      What if a fox or coyote chews through?? Do you leave them in there overnight?

      The Rabbitatio is for play and enrichment only -- they don't live there, they just play there. All my rabbits are house rabbits, which means we all live in the house together (otherwise I'd miss out on all our sweet sofa snuggles and bed cuddles that you can see in some of my other videos). Rabbits are always supervised by an adult human in the Rabbitatio.

    This makes me want to move back to Texas or somewhere I can afford a house ! So I can build this. I had chickens in Texas and they had a hellava Zen pen.

      I got a lot of inspiration from fancy backyard chicken houses that I saw online! I also moved from a high cost of living city to a place where I could afford to own a house again (the only drawback was leaving a city with good exotics vets).

    Very nice, now you got me thinking of building for Spotty and Dotty and little Becky. Spots and Dots are two spotted English and Becky is a black Nether land Dwarf. Your buns are going to love that new playhouse. They may need some fans for the summer though, Angoras mind the heat more than some buns . So good of you.

      Thank you for the nice comment! I can't say enough good things about how enjoyable the Rabbitatio has been for both bunnies and humans in our household. Even though I keep my fuzzy bunnies in short haircuts all summer long there are still times it is too hot during the day -- really for all of us! It's still a really nice place to hang out on summer mornings and evenings though! We even go out for short play periods during the snowy winter. I think your buns would love it too.

      Seeing gentle breezes ruffling a long-haired rabbit's fur and seeing them lift their noses to the sky to catch scents is one of the delights of the Rabbitatio. From one Angora lover to another 😍

    they may try to tunnel under the enclosure to explore the neighborhood at night and look for girl bunnies

    • @PunkRockFoxy
      @PunkRockFoxy  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well the sandbox is about 12" deep and they get pretty darn lazy about digging in there, ha ha. Seriously though, even though no rabbit has ever mustered up any effort to dig in the Rabbitatio, even if they did it has a 42" poured concrete frost footing that would prevent escape. They are always supervised out there and we all live and sleep inside the house (gotta get those sofa and bed cuddles from them). Thank you for your nice comments!

    Yes i agree with others. Please give update. It looks great. I give it 2 weeks if they are always there before dug up and eaten. If let out everyday for a few hours a day i give it 3 months. If same but supervised during that time out……. I don’t know. Never had that much time. I’ve tried making it nice. I gave up. I just keep it healthy and neatest i can.

    This video is a year old now. Can we get an update? How long did it take for them to pick that clover clean? Mine ate all the grass in their 12 x 16 area in a matter of weeks. Picked it clean.

    • @PunkRockFoxy
      @PunkRockFoxy  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Update: there are two pairs who play in the Rabbitatio and between those four rabbits they never make a dent in the ground cover (first clover then replaced with a mix of fine fescue grasses). The Rabbitatio is only used for play time so I don't think they are ever out there long enough to make a real dent in the ground cover. They do regularly nom down the 'tasting pots' filled with herbs but I always grow fresh herb pots outside the Rabbitatio (the pots are on a gardening bench) to swap out the eaten pots with fresh pots full of herbs. Thank you for your question! 🙂

    i've never heard of clover contributing to bladder sludge, is this something that's particular to your buns like an allergy? mine absolutely loves clover and eats it all spring and summer with no ill effects from what i've seen, but if this is an allergy or something along those lines i'll have to keep eyes open to make sure she doesn't develop it

    • @PunkRockFoxy
      @PunkRockFoxy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Clover is fairly high in calcium. Some bunnies seem to be more susceptible to developing sludge than others, and for those bunnies it can help to be mindful of calcium intake. The connection between calcium and sludge doesn't seem to be well understood -- some exotics vets think developing sludge is based more on genetics than on diet. For me, I saw sludge develop when my bunnies were eating a lot of clover, and thankfully we were able to get rid of the sludge by eliminating the clover and increasing their water intake. Milage will vary though! Thank you for your comment and question!

    Is magnus a Jersey Woolly?!

    • @PunkRockFoxy
      @PunkRockFoxy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Melissa! Magnus is an Angora (also, adopted/rescued). One of the ways you can tell is that an Angora rabbit is much larger than a Jersey Wooly. This is because Jersey Woolies are a cross between a Netherland Dwarf and a French Angora, resulting in a rabbit much smaller than a standard Angora. Jersey Woolies also have much smaller ears than an Angora rabbit, a flatter face shape, and a more compact body. Magnus weighs 8 lbs. and has very large ears, a pointed face, and a very long body, all typical for an Angora rabbit. If you look for those appearance details you'll be able to spot the differences very quickly. I have a few videos on my channel that show Magnus with his full, luxurious coat where he looks more clearly Angora-ish -- he's just got a short haircut here. :-)
