If you don't use the Spine Rip Fatality on the first Scorpion battle, you don't have to fight him again in the Netherrealm and you get a different cutscene in its place with an old man who may or may not be Shinnok.

Because they’re not supposed to. Shinnok is an elder god,a being stronger than shao kahn and the only beings shao kahn feared. Even Quan chi mentions how shao kahn is nothing to Shinnok. Shinnok had 5 elemental gods guard his amulet as it restored his elder god powers also allowing him to travel realms freely and keeping it from him prevents his escape. Shao kahn didn’t have any such extreme measures taken against him. The 5 Elemental gods combined gaurded Shinnoks amulet and thsts like the upper extreme of it anything more and it’s the elder gods themselves. Shinnok created the amulet and infused his elder god powers in it when he was defeated as a means to keep his powers intact yet detached from his body. This is why he’s so reliant on his amulet cuz he has full elder god power when he has it. He gets back his own power. The fight of kahn with armor shows how strong he is and the fight with shinnok with a shield of invincibility where he’s literally invulnerable ar full power show how much stronger shinnok is meant to be from kahn he can’t even be harmed. In all our time playing mortal kombat you gotta wonder...what are the names of the other gods?! We know Raiden is the thunder god and we know Fujin is the wind god - but we never hear the names of the earth, water & fire god...it would be cool to have the other gods in the next mortal kombat games along with Sareena.

Hydro is actually not a god but a slain ninja from the Lin Kuei, and was in fact killed by Scorpion just before Sub-Zero arrived on a boat heading to Shang Tsung's island (he was mistaken for Sub-Zero due to having a similar outfit & abilities) it wouldn't make sense for Hydro to guard the temple of elements and also be a member of the Lin Kuei. Blaze is not a god either but was in fact created by the sorceress Delia (lady of flame and wife of Argus) Blaze was in a long slumber before being awakened to fulfill his duty to fight atop the pyramid for armageddon. So he couldn't slumber and also guard the temple of elements if he was concealed within the pyramid. Literally none of those three are gods - so that begs the question as to who those elemental gods actually are, because that's still a mystery...
I mean, I don’t know how anyone got past Fujin’s suicide attack without being told what to do, there were no hints or button prompts. At least Shinnok was a legit puzzle and not just something obscure.

I love the acting. The actors in this were the same guys that played the characters in the main games, so this was the first time they were actually allowed to act instead of just pose and throw punches. The guy playing Quan Chi was having a blast. 🤣
