  • Hi Everyone, this was a highly requested video after my video about my income, so here is my comparison of running an Etsy store vs my own website operated through Wix. If you are wondering whether to start an Etsy store or open your own website, then this video is for you. I currently have both an Etsy store (establish on February 2021) and an Official Website operated by Wix (establiched on November 2021). I will talk through the facts and experiences I have running both online stores, going through the pros and cons, and discussing some small business tips.
    I hope this video has been insightful and feel free to leave me any questions in the comments section.

    This is really in-depth and informative! I don't use WIX, but I feel the same with the whole "personal website vs. Etsy" debate. Did you ever encounter any struggles or challenges working with Etsy (ie. back-end issues, customer service, etc)? A video on SEO and marketing would be really nice to see from you as well! 💛💛💛

      Thank you 😀. I haven't had any issues so far with etsy, they have helped me remove peoples listings that stole my patterns, and quite quickly in fact. Will definitely do an SEO one once I learn more about it myself 😅

      Yeh..it's the fees, so we have to increase the prices by 10% in our etsy store..😔

    I just started my Etsy shop, and noticed they’re taking lots of fee. But since I just started, I don’t want to price my items to high. Now I’m thinking about making my own webshop :)

      Yes, when I first started, my prices weren't that high either, it was only when demand increased, I raised my prices. Also, you can do some research now regarding which website builder you want to use, there are many that you can work with, like wix, squarespace, shopify etc 😀

    This was a good video. A video on the SEOs would be good too. I’ve been thinking about having my own website in the future (literally just starting out doing markets). But I’ve heard a lot of cons about Etsy. I’ve started to purchase patterns and things from creators websites because of those fees. It was interesting though to hear you say that despite all of the cons, you don’t regret your time on Etsy. It’s different to hear an opinion that isn’t totally canceling etsy😂. Thank you for this video!❤❤

      Thank you 😊. I honestly believe Etsy helped me build my business and helped my business to gain new buyers. Even now, I still get the most sales through etsy because that is where many people look first. Many people don't have IG or don't use it so much to find designs and designers. I have multiple stores online, not just etsy and my webstore, because I want to make sure I cover platforms that other people prefer 😊. I wouldnt cancel etsy completely because I know they do a lot of things to help sellers and buyers, such as the SEOs for instance, which is not easy when you do it yourself..though totally get it, if they cancel Etsy if they're not seeing the results along with the high fees 😅

    I don't mind following shop owners to their own website when they want to save on Etsy fees, but I've encountered many that didn't offer Paypal and that's something that I need to use when buying internationally (otherwise it's constant calls back and forth with my bank) and then they wonder why no one buys from their standalone like they do on Etsy.

    • @chloeeyuen
      @chloeeyuen  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's very interesting that not many small businesses have PayPal...it's very easy to set up as well and many people prefer PayPal because it's more secure..

    also etsy does say on there website, your shop could be shut down if you are trying to sell off the website and redirecting sales. so people do have to be careful. obviously some get away with it and some don't.

    Great comparison, I have one question. With a Wix website, is it easy to be able to add an extra template or whatever is required to sell digital products like your PDF patterns? I have a Wix website but haven’t discovered how to add the digital component

    • @chloeeyuen
      @chloeeyuen  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's very easy to add a digital product on your wix store, here's a link to help you with that support.wix.com/en/article/wix-stores-creating-a-digital-product

    For offsite ads, per total sales directly attributed to the ads, the first total sale price, + shipping and all sales 30 days after: 12% if your last 356days revenue was >$10.000 and 15% if it was

      And forget about how prices escalate in Europe because of VAT. Yes you can claim that VAT but you have a threshold where a VAT ID is required. I dont yet was to get an ID because my sales are no where near the threshold. Oh, and I realised that you pay VAT for Printify costs (and some little extra that I cannot still explain). Then add VAT to Etsy cost to customer, based on where the item is being shipped to. Now VAT is something you still need to deal with in your own website but if Etsy fees are not there, then you have a chance at these very thin margins.

      Yeh, I was shocked too when I did the maths after having my etsy store for the first year.. but I don't regret opening an etsy as it does bring a lot of sales. It actually brings more revenue in than my website 😅. Also, the fees can help with tax deductions as well, in Australia I'm charged around 30% in tax and goes higher as I earn more...so any fees can assist with bringing down the tax I have to pay..

    Thank you, I felt that you put a lot of thought in what you presented. May I ask what about shipping? I went on Etsy because I thought their lower priced shipping options might offset their fees, but then got totally lost trying to figure out how their shipping worked.

    • @chloeeyuen
      @chloeeyuen  ปีที่แล้ว

      With shipping I don't use etsy shipping options, because 1, there are fees attached to that too, 2, you can get better discounts when you ship directly from a courier. For example, I use Australia Post, business account, which has a band system, so depending how many items you ship, you get a discount, the higher the band, the more discount you get. So definitely do research checking the shipping rates for different courier companies and if they have business accounts that can benefit business owners. Hope this helps 😊

    Making your own website is always better. Why? Because there are no rules and you can upload whatever you want ( even if it’s mature content ) . I feel like using wix is safer even if you’re trying to sell copyrighted stuff. Although you should still try to make your own stuff

    • @chloeeyuen

      100% agree 👍

    how do you copy keywords into wix. i have that too. are you just typing random words in the description box? hash-tagging them?

    • @chloeeyuen
      @chloeeyuen  ปีที่แล้ว

      I just use the same description and title as my Etsy listing's. If you have an etsy and haven't used Marmelead before, you can do a trial for 30 days to see what key words to use in your listing's in etsy and then use the same in your wix. Hope this helps 😊

    • @ShantesTravelThings
      @ShantesTravelThings ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @chloeeyuen oh so you're just using certain words as part of your description. Got it.

      @ShantesTravelThings yep that is right 😄, requires a bit of researching but that's how I go about it 😅

    Do you mass produce your products or do you make all your products by yourself?

    • @chloeeyuen
      @chloeeyuen  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I make everything myself, everything is handmade or hand packed with love Nd care 😊. I mostly sell digital products, which I design myself as well 😀

  • @ShantesTravelThings
    @ShantesTravelThings ปีที่แล้ว +1

    a lot of people don't know about those extra fees because they lied. basically a scam. they advertised 6.5% and 20c. that's it. and they charge you an additional fee if you connect your square reader which is dumb because square is not their product and the fee is higher than what square charges. trash.

    • @chloeeyuen
      @chloeeyuen  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh wow I had no idea about the square reader charge. I have a square reader that I use for my markets, but don't attach it to any selling platforms.. I agree the fees are ridiculous, but I have come to a realisation that etsy does a lot of things that can take months to do,like SEOs to help with driving people to your store. If you were to hire someone to help with SEO for your personal website, it can cost thousands for their services and SEOs is something we need to constantly update as well..it can get very time consuming too..I really hope they can be more transparent about the fees, so people who decide to sell on their platform won't be shocked by the numbers..
