  • If you or someone you know has any experience working with BTS D-1 tape decks, please watch this video and contact us at rebootrewinddoc@gmail.com.
Last December, we shared the news that our documentary team was granted a look into the archives at Mainframe Studios. We learned about the collection of D-1 video tapes that held the original high-quality, uncompressed masters of ReBoot, along with a ton of never-before-seen ReBoot bonus material.
In order to capture and preserve this media, we required access to a D-1 video tape deck. D-1 is a very niche digital format from the early 90’s which has long been obsolete. Mainframe had retired their tape decks many years ago and we were unsuccessful in locating anyone with a D-1 deck in Canada, let alone in Vancouver, BC where the tapes and our crew are located. Shipping away 200+ precious video tapes to be transferred elsewhere was a risk that none of our team, nor Mainframe, wanted to take.
After we broke the news of the ReBoot master tapes, Linus Tech Tips reached out to us and offered to help us acquire the equipment. It took some time, but we were able to source the equipment from overseas, and LTT assisted us with the complex logistics of importing the large machines to Canada.
These are complicated machines, and we knew they were going to require some maintenance before we would be ready to capture the ReBoot tapes. We have a team of talented technicians working on these machines, but information and documentation on these particular decks is extremely scarce.
In order to clear up some of the issues we are currently having with these decks, we asked LTT to put a call out for some of the items we need to complete maintenance.
Lastly, thank you to everyone who has reached out to us since December to offer help so we could make this media preservation project a reality. Once our technical difficulties are resolved, we look forward to sharing with you the results of our efforts. From the test captures we’ve already conducted, we know that it’s going to be worth it.
    Stay frosty!

HD in the sense that its the raw render, but I don't believe the masters were in a cinematic aspect ratio. My assumption would be it's 4:3, but it's the original master being transferred onto a modern medium, so it'll be the full glory but in 4:3. I COULD be wrong though, but don't expect an HD aspect ratio.

I mean the C&C series had acted video in the games and the remake got super lucky that a defunct EA office storage site kept the storage that had most of the tapes from Westwood Studios. There is also a big difference from the internet copy of the produced work and the original masters. The TV show Dr Who lost tons of series to a cost cutting measure that reused tapes. This is not the first time master preservation has been an issue and it would be nice if it was the last.

Are there D-1 tapes for all seasons of ReBoot??

    • @Brandon-g6m
      @Brandon-g6m 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yes from what I've heard it's all of Reboot, The one thing about the tapes is they are all for the pal region (Europe), That means compared to Ntsc (North America) Pal Region runs at a lower Fps (Frames per second) of 25 while Ntsc is 30, However the good thing about Pal region is that it runs at a slightly better resolution to Ntsc, The fps for the pal version is not a big deal as I'm sure it can always be upscaled to Ntsc for blu ray release in the future or whatever the team is planning to do once everything is said and done, It would be nice to also have the Ntsc tapes found but to my knowledge I think those might be lost forever, When the studio of Reboot (Mainframe Entertainment) was rebranded as Rainmaker Entrainment in 2007 and new management was brought in alot of Reboot stuff that was stored from it's production was Said to be thrown out by orders of new management, If what i read was true that should be considered a crime as reboot has alot of historical significance not only in Canada but the world as well

@@Brandon-g6m Any NTSC tapes would be at least one generation degraded anyways. The show was rendered at 25 FPS to save time.

didn't some exec end up deleting all the assets from the reboot show? that's why the "reboot" of reboot looks so gross.

@@Brandon-g6mI wouldn’t say it’s a crime, since they technically owned the material. Awful? Probably.
It’s one of the follies of digital production. It can easily be rid of in a plethora of ways. Not to defend them, it’s not that unusual in the entertainment and gaming industry to lose assets from simply just losing access to the drives. And preservation isn’t that much of a thought. Though in all honesty? Reconstructing the assets would be downright easy given how immense the industry is now versus than in the 90s. Given their level of detail? It requires less time and money than more detailed modern assets.
Not saying it wouldn’t be a big effort, though. Mostly in volume.
Are the master tapes themselves PAL, then? Even if they are, it doesn’t seem all that hard to recreate the NTSC version because it’s just a matter of conversion.
Unless there’s cuts. But if they’re the production masters, then they’re fine.

@@ByTheStorm Yes legally speaking they are in there right to do with whatever they want with the materials they own but from a moral standpoint I feel they are in the wrong, In my opinion when it comes to cultural significance and preservation there should be laws in place to protect such things from just being deposed and lost completely without proper archival or documentation of existence, Just look at what happened to doctor who, Yes I know that's a different story from reboot but it's all relevant because if there was some sorta law or plan in place at the time when those early episodes were broadcast then alot of those episodes wouldn't be still lost or in bad condition today, Today it's so much easier to store content and it doesn't take up much space either to save things on a large drive, In some cases I do believe some material should be lost forever or hidden from the public such as things that involve illegal crimes or traumatic events such as the untimely death of a individual, This topic is much different one and is another story for a different time.
It's not about being able to remake something, Yes reboot could be remade in better quality but I'm sure alot of people who grew up with the original would still prefer that version, There is alot of a charm with the original, Obviously if there would be a remake there would need to be changes as some of the concepts would feel outdated to modern viewers, Things like some of the names used would have to be updated to fit modern technology that's used today, Voices would need to be rerecorded with alot of cases having to find a replacement voice actor, References would also need to be updated as reboot was known including many, Also if you want something to look good then yes there probably would still need to be a big effort as to avoid something like the models in the guardian code from happening again, Regardless of you can just remake something or not I don't think it means you can just get rid of the original after, It still should be preserved for future viewing or a study of the progression of modern technology, One more point is too remake something you kinda need the original as reference so that why preservation is important.
Yes all the tapes found are Pal I'm pretty sure, I'm not too beat up about the pal tapes as it's really not a big issue, The good thing about pal region is the improved resolution while the frame rate is lower compared to NTSC it can be converted to NTSC framerate, My only issue is if there was anything exclusive to NTSC never used for Pal then that would be bad but so far everything seems be there even the Imax Rides and a few other rare things like commercials and more so I'm super excited.

@@Brandon-g6m I’m not talking about a remake. I mean a reconstruction that uses the original audio with models directly based on the originals. If done right, it would have the charm of the original. Though maybe expensive.
