Turn knob on the right of the dash glow plug all the way up for higher idle, and in case it´s been standing for a long time, prime pump on forehand. If your glow plugs are okay and pump is in good condition, it takes a second to start this car at -30° C/-20°F. Mine ALWAYS did :)
Proper Merc my friend owned one over here in the UK in the late 80s early 90s it was white with blue interior and was a beautiful car to drive around in and so reliable. Keep this car and restore if you can, it will only keep climbing in value. Thanks, great video.
The beautiful and timeless w115 series. One broke the record recently for the highest mileage at about 4.5 million kilometers on the original engine. used by a Greek taxi driver for years, it was bought by the Mercedes Benz Museum in Stuttgart and put on display. I had the petrol engine 200 model. uncompromising build quality and simplicity at the same time. Oh how I miss it now.
I have a 1976 240D W123 with the same ignition system pulling the button 😄 om616 engine but being W123 body first year many parts are from om615; there are days when he gets stubborn to start hahaha but in the end he always turns on. I'm glad for you to be able to own and drive this old Benz diesel 👍💪
If you try to restart after a failed start wait a little longer when reglowing as the atomized diesel cools them while that doesn't happen with the glow control. Don't touch the gas until you feel it starts firing as the atomized diesel again takes the compression heat away but as soon as it fires hit the gas to raise the rpm.
not nearly as noisy as I'd expected on a Cold start, it'll keep going long after your modern's succumbed to some Electronic Gremlin. Much easier to drive than a modern in slippery conditions too, lets you 'feel' the road far better
This was my first diesel on the first day I brought it home. I was too worried about revving a cold motor, I became less concerned about that over time.

@@brnrmbo4658 NEVER foot to the floor for cold starts. i cycle my glow plugs on my 300d a few times and it always starts with no throttle. if u need to hold the throttle to start it go after your glow plugs, injectors, and check compression. i dont touch the accelerator until i see my temp gauge going up
I learned a lesson about cheap tires. This came with a set of Starfire tires, absolutely terrible. My donor car has a set of toyos. They made a huge difference. I'd drive it anywhere with the right tires.

Probaly if it s warmer than -10 C ... other wise it wont...i got 2 of them for many years. bellow -10c it s either block heater, quick start fluid, or let it idle all night... you can remove the key and let it idle on this model... with no key sterring is lock so they wont go far !!!

I had a 1977 300D with a worn engine, that had some trouble starting and only started with full throttle, but I've had 6 other old diesels which have been fine, one had a broken glow plug relay and still started in -5c. You'd be surprised how much a simple valve adjustment does! One of my 240D's went from 8,4 to 6,4L/100kms
If you engine was in good order you never need full gas cold start, my w123, 240 diesel need just a little gas cold . Your engine needs a tuneup. That is why you need more gas at cold start. Start by replace glowplugs and fill up motor oil in the dieselpump, check for leaks on it to. Allways use mineral diesel motoroil. If you can use Shell Rotella 10w-40 / normal. Or 15w-40 mineral truck motoroil. if your engine is bad and hard to start, that oil seals the piston rings and get u better compression when you start the engine. Check camshaft so you have its tolerence on the valves and its not leak and get you low compression. Sry my bad english...
This video was shot within a couple of days of me bringing her home. Since that time I have adjusted the valve lash, replaced the injectors, purged the injection pump, and evacuated the entire fuel system and started fresh with some purge in the tank. It starts allot easier now. Perhaps this deserves a follow up video however it will have to wait - we are currently seeing lows in the 20's, doesn't make for a very exciting cold start video.
I guess you don't have winter tires for it? Lots of people drive old RWD cars over here, but i rarely see anyone skidding because winter tires are mandatory, and 80% use studded winter tires.
That's a good question. This was almost a year ago and I cannot recall but seeing how it skids the front tire when I am in reverse I am thinking I had it cranked, but did it off camera.

You must hold down the accelerator fully when you start in cold. they get too little fuel and die as you notice. once it works on all cylinders you lift it up but maintain high idle speed.

Montana uses dirt, no salt but they do spray some deicer on the interstates. Not sure what's it's made of. Cars do rust a bit but nothing like you see in the Midwest.

Great video! Tell me: Does the seat belt need to be fastened before the engine will start? I am looking at one with a mere 8k miles on it and I am lusting after it, but it had trouble starting and the dealer didn't know why, and then he came up with that answer.
I don't believe so. I have both this 75 and a 79. Neither needs the seat belt fastened to start. In fact these are completely mechanical fuel injection, if the engine cranks it should start. Cold starting is one of the big tell alls for diesels. What year Merc were you looking at?
In warm to moderate temps after glow a OM 61x motor should fire off almost instantly. If it doesnt check glow plugs for operation. If they work start looking at compression valve adjustment and fuel injectors. You may have to give a little throttle if it is a pre 1980 version since I dont think those came wiht a start module that applies throttle automatically during startup like the later ones had.

Diesel Coldstart needs Full Throttle and cranking until it runs. You are starting it like a gas engine.

Why full throttle ? My old Opel rekord diesel starts without any foot to the floor !

The W115 is an epitome of reliability. Spclly the OM 616 motor. This motor gets under the hood of the Serie 123 that followed.

I have an mint 83 300sd turbo diesel I would NEVER take it out in the snow and road salt she stays in the garage in the winter.

Just put one or two bags of sand in the trunk (25-50 kg) to have some more traction. My granddad used to do that too.
