Tecnico Aristocrat 750 Radio Restoration - Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • I was given this big ugly duckling of a radio because it looked hideous and headed for the dump. But after a clean up and some basic electronic repair it looks mightily impressive in my collection. It could have been a different story for this unwanted piece of radio history but who would be stupid enough to take it on?

    Buy the way, I am in the TV industry, and your video work is second to none......a lot of effort is always put in......people dont realise how much goes into shooting and editing.......but I am glad you guys at the top level do.....this is more than just a restore video.....to me its documenting history and skill for those that come after we are long gone.

      Hi Harb, thanks for your comment. You are right, there is a lot goes into making the videos and setting up cameras etc so thanks for noticing. I'm trying to get better results, my biggest issue at the moment is camera focusing I have to set the focus manually on each camera sometimes and they are still out of focus 😄

    Hey David. Andrew from Melbourne here. A family friend of mine brought over an exact same Aristocrat for me to play with....I was 13 years old. Rod Stewarts Maggie May was big at that time. I turned 60 today....9th April 2021 and have loved tube amps ever since. I sold a lot of radios as a kid and I'm kicking myself now. That word hindsight. I had an external antenna tied to the chimneys and I often picked up AM signals from Sydney stations at night. Your work is second to none. I now own a Primaluna stereo tube amp running 8 EL34s and 6 12AU7s. It cost me 5 grand but is worth every cent. My Leak Stereo 20 Amplifier is waiting to be restored. The pre-amp has all the original knobs....a rarity today but I love it. I love your channel. This is how things should be done. Keep up the great work, Andrew.

      Hi Andrew, I had a console radio that I picked up from a neighbour and put in my little work shed, (converted chicken shed) Maggie May was on all the time and when I hear it now I remember my shed and the smell of the furniture wax they used at the time. Your Primaluna amp would be amazing, that's some top gear. The Leak 20 is a nice unit too, from the late 50s I think. Thanks Andrew 😀

    I used to love to go to the TV repair store in the 60's with my dad. He had this shoe box full of vacuum tubes. Once a year, for some reason he went to buy tubes. First we would spend 15-20 minutes with the tube tester. A flip chart told you what settings to put the tester at in order to test the tube. Mostly it had 5 or 6 presets for filament voltage. Plug it in. The tube would glow and the the needle would tell you if the tube was bad. If it was bad, I have the honor and priveledge of cranking up the filament voltage, click by click. as it glowed and then burned out. Very satifying for a 12 year old.

      It is kind of sad that today's TVs and radios are designed to be almost impossible to repair when they break. Some components are even packed in resin to make them this way.

      I was the designated tube checker in the family. I'd pull all the tubes, ride my bike down to the 7-Eleven (convenience store) and check every one. They even had a stock of tubes in the bottom of the tester.

    Loved the presentation. I recovered one from a dump trailer back in 1976, and enjoyed using it. It had short wave as well as a line input, but was lost in a house move. The most notable feature is the cylindrical mould of the bakelite surrounding the speaker, perhaps assisting 'purity' of the tone. Would have been a luxury item in its time...

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I noticed the chassis had different control knob configurations pre-drilled. I would have sounded pretty good back in the 70s with AM still the main radio platform... and short wave too 😃

    It is a pleasure to watch a real craftsman at work. I knew you were one of the few when I saw you check the tubes. Most technicians fail to do this unless they're is a problem, and they can't find any other cause for it. You should be proud. I grew up with vacuum tubes. My first transistors didn't like my cathode warming ;-) Many years later I found a Halicrafters Sky Buddy for 2 dollars because it didn't work. When I inspected the guy, I found that two tubes with the same socket had been exchanged. Placing them in their right place made my radio work again. Some old leaking capacitors replaced and we were on air again.

    It’s really nice to see a restoration which is well done. These usually are awful to watch but you truly know what you’re doing. I’ve been doing this since 1966 and I always try to find the most original way to do that. Unfortunately the electrolytics are problematic and you must use modern looking ones. You assembled then really neatly so they don’t interfere the overall view. I have made my daytime job in a TV station where I took care of studio cameras and video tape recorders. So this kind of hobby is relaxing.

    I will use a loose phrase I once heard in a service workshop years ago - "the ugly duckling is now a beautiful swan" - at the time, it was about a TV with some damage that was eventually fixed (and led to a very expensive bill for the customer) but I am applying it to your successful radio repair/restore here. Awesome looking and sounds good now. :)

    • @DavidTipton101

      David Tipton , they all looked great, when painted and new. Over the years, the paint would get chipped, scratched and faded. Then, if smokers lived in the house, the radio would additionally look more ugly and stained, like yours, before you refinished the cabinet. Now yours looks great. Yours seems to have a strong cabinet, but the Bakelite ones here in the USA during the 1940s and early 1950s were pretty thin and fragile. A three foot drop on to a hard floor would shatter the cabinet into several pieces. Great video!

    You work harder and have done a better job on this radio because you work hard than most doing radio restores on TH-cam. The work you did to repair damage and corrosion and to refinish the complete radio is well worth noting.
    Your video is better filmed and then edited or whatever that is called; the production is correct my wife says. Your video is a good match for your restoration work. If you do that too you are a very talented fellow. Hats off for a job well done in this restoration and video production.

    It doesn't even look like the same radio, beautiful restoration and sounds great :-D
    I was given a hifi to clean up for a blind man, he smoked like a chimney, it was covered with a thick coating of niccoteen, just touching it made the hand stick to it like glue (Horrible).
    After cleaning with warm water and washing up liquid, it was a really nice unit.
    The niccoteen seemed to protect it from scratches, and the bowl of poo-eee water was disgusting.
    I'm glad i never took up the habit of smoking.

      Thanks zx8401ztv. I worked on commercial aircraft and in the early years when smoking was allowed the entire inside of the aircraft was covered in tar. It was good for finding pressurisation leaks though 😄

    Hi David. Yes, Tecnico did make electrolytic and paper capacitors, many other components as well. The reason that each side of the H.T. winding on the transformer measures a different resistance is that the outer winding has more wire, although it has the same number of turns. 😊

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ahh... yes that makes sense Stuart, I was starting to realise that resistance was not an indicator of transformer condition. Turns are the deciding factor of output but I couldn't work out why the resistance was always different. Thanks for letting me know, with no formal radio training it's great to get feedback and pick up information like that. Cheers :-)

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DavidTipton101 Face Dials varied about as much as did the cabinet style.
      Airline had a "Movie Dial" which actually used a strip of 35 MM film for the Stations with the name of the City and the call letters of the Station. Some even used a rotary similar to the old Rotary Dial Phones. The Airline "Movie Dial" radio is probably one of the most unique Face Dials on any radio ever made. Packard Bell used what they called a "Stationized Dial" for many years with the City name and the Station call letters. Zenith also had some very unusual what they called Robot Shutter Dials which were also different and today quite collectible.

      @@richardmcleod5967 I've seen some of those on TH-cam videos. I have a radio with the phone dialer and projectograph station numbers although the holes for the dialer had been designed out on my model leaving a large knob in the middle of the dial. It's always interesting to see the dial as it's the main part of the radio to a large extent.

      @@DavidTipton101 The Movie Dial Radio was made for Montgomery Ward's Department Stores in the States. They were a competitor of Sears Roebuck and other such large Department Stores. The Movie Dial Radio was made under the AIRLINE brand used by Montgomery Ward's Department Stores. They used many companies to make their radios but the Wells Gardner Company out of Chicago made the Movie Dial radios for them. The Wells Gardner Radio Corp. was known for very well made radios, often unique in style as the Movie Dial one certainly is a good example.
      The Movie Dial radio came in a Farm Radio (for remote areas lacking electricity) for use with a Battery and also a grand Console of massive size with one of the most beautiful escutcheons in an art deco style on any radio ever made. The actual dial is 35MM film, and if damaged is almost impossible to have repaired. The mechanism is also quite complicated and not easy to work on, but if in good shape, it is one of the most unusual and easy to read large Dial Faces on any radio. There may be someone out there these days who restores or can come up with new strips of the 35MM film, but they would have to be made individually.
      The Movie Dial radios were made in the 1930's when everyone went to the movies and it is easy to see how having such a radio would interest the public and sold to the average "Joe" through Montgomery Ward's Department Stores out of their catalogs!
      With a large and impressive Dial Face, one actually looks at the radio when listening to it, especially during the evenings in a darkened room.
