  • One sea-faring captain made a brave exploration around Antarctica and discovered new lands. He probably made most of it up.

This kind of started as a short Bad History idea but it turned out Morrell's other journeys could potentially be their own video as well in the future, so I kept this one for his first journey in the Antarctic.

It is an amazing coincidence that Map Men just released a video on almost the same subject!

Kind of funny that this comes out right after a Map Men video about islands that don't exist.

This guy's work was a big inspiration for Edger Allen Poe's "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket", which ends in Antarctica. That Poe work would then later be a big influence on HP Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness

@@jeffreygao3956 idek, nor do I care to know tbh. it's literally the same Eurocentric "Aliens built the Pyramids" logic that Black people and POC rightfully slam as a racist discreditation of the achievements of non-Western cultures, but turned around and weaponized by a handful of shameless Afrocentrists against Indigenous people who have already had a large amount of their history erased. Then these folks like Ivan Van Sertima come around and try to literally steal their history, appropriating their culture in the most egregious way imaginable. For anyone who actually cares about history, culture, or anthropological studies of any sort, this is incredibly frustrating. And that's to say nothing of the people whose history is actively being stolen.

During those times I was looking at some maps from the Second World War in the Pacific and some islands appeared that I had never heard of, I went looking and came across 3 islands that, in fact, never existed, they were errors or inventions of navigators, but that remained decades in the past. world maps

This reminds me of that venician guy who claimed his ancestors the Zeno Brothers had been on a Northern voyage to America before Columbus. In that case the whole journey seems fictional, but a few place names and descriptions of Greenland/Iceland do match somewhat.
