The last season, whilst still great!, feels like a step back from moments like these. Emily beating up Aunt Lydia, This scene, Angel Flight, etc.
      SPOILERS
The fact that the last season ends with Canada completely switching their position, deporting all the refugees, and on its way to becoming a second Gilead, AFTER the entire show depicting Canada as the never-to-be achieved safe haven and promise of safety, i don't know, in my opinion it kind of sours all the sacrifices and pain and horrible things done to get there.

One of the things that makes this scene so beautiful is the fact that Tuello read him the charges and they actually arrested Waterford. Tuello and the other Americans could’ve easily taken Fred off the beaten path, tortured him for info, then execute him and NOBODY would find out(or really even care if they did). But instead, they arrested him under international law and he will receive a trial. In their country’s darkest hour, Tuello and the others refused to sink to Gilead’s level.

A nice little detail regarding the armbands worn by the government-in-exile, I didn't see the US flag we're all familiar with - not so many stars! According to Offred's (June) narration, the former United States has been reduced to a mere two states. Chicago is still being fought over by the Gileadean military and remnants of the US armed forces. I believe there is a map in the novel itself: Gilead itself is a vast sprawl spreading from the rich East Coast, and what remains is a mix of poisonous wasteland and lawless regions crawling with all manner of peoples. A few areas have actually been wrested from Gilead control by separatists. I must admit about not being certain whether the soldiers were Canadian or part of the US remnant being given the honour to vengefully capture Waterford himself. One of the best scenes of the series!

The soldiers arresting the Waterfords are definitely Canadian. A few reasons:
      1. Even though they are allies, the American officials in Canada technically have no jurisdiction or authority to arrest anyone; they are likely just there as observers (it must have been very satisfying to watch though)
      2. The vehicles they loaded the Waterfords into had Canadian flags on them (I can't get a good enough look to see the make

Gilead's position must be pretty weak if Canada thinks it's in their interests to make such a provocation. A pretty funny turn around from earlier in the season when Gilead's leadership thought it was a good idea to use Nichole as some sort of barganing chip to extract concessions from the Canadians.

I'd love to see the the bully boy murderous militia called Guardians try it on with the worlds finest Soldiers.
And if in the story Gilead threatens Nuclear retaliation, I hope the writers remember, The British, Indians and Pakistani's have Nukes, and certainly India and Pakistan have mass troop numbers, the like of which I can't see how a divided nation like Gilead could ever hope to match.

shocking hobby Canada’s main advantage over Giliad is it’s good relationship with most countries around the world thanks to it’s membership in the British Commonwealth, NATO, and most importantly the United Nations. Canada has had a long history of involvement in the UN supporting several UN peacekeeping and humanitarian missions giving it a positive name in global community.
Giliad on the other hand likely has few friends on the world stage. Maybe North Korea might support Giliad but that may be it. Economically, I doubt they have that same wight as the USA does in our timeline. Threatening war with Canada is an effective tactic as a large chunk of Canada’s population is in range of Giliad’s artillery and missiles, but that’s the only card they really have.

The change in reality upon crossing the border is palpable. The sudden existence of norms, laws, and rights aren’t real per se, they are just ideas and nothing has materially changed. But the belief in them, and the willingness to back that up with consequences is so omnipresent and inevitable, it is like they crossed an invisible line which led them into another world. And the principles embedded in the symbols, and procedures, have a force of their own, they are practically glowing.
