I had an incident like this one time. Was biking along a trail in Maine and I bumped into this guy. He flags me down and tells me its private land. Now, I was well aware of this because it was *my* land. I was gonna tell him that, but decided against it immediately because I didnt know who this guy was or what he was doing on my property.
Long story short: it turns out he had been illegally logging on my, and my neighbors, property for years.

And if a motorcyclist ever hits my car or breaks my mirror they deserve a highway-speed Wipeout.
I'm very sure that old guy could be brought up on charges for welding that axe. It's okay to be carrying an axe but when you make a threat with it or act like you're going to hit someone with it you're in deep shit unless you are protecting yourself from grave bodily injury.
I know a guy that went to prison; a father and son unknowingly trespassed on his land. He went out there with a shotgun and threatened them. He did three years.
Depends on the country. In certain states in America there's the "Make My Day" law that allows landowners to take lethal action if they feel threatened. Make sense if you're being robbed, but none if it's just a kid on a bike.
hannah banana you don't have to be on your own land to take action if you feel you are in grave bodily danger. If gramps would have drawn back that axe and/or made a threatening comment, like he did, and you felt that your life was in danger you could have taken action to protect yourself.
But you're right, laws vary state to state and country to country.
You just better have a minimum of 10 grand in the bank to take care of your legal needs if you feel you have to defend yourself.

In my state, you can't even have someone arrested for criminal trespassing unless you either a.)have "No Trespassing" signs posted or your property fenced in or b.)You have specifically told that person that they are not allowed on your property before. Old dude is out of line. The kid wasn't even belligerent or a prick to him and agreed to leave.
There's also a "Stand Your Ground" law in certain states allowing people like this biker to defend himself with deadly force if necessary, not required to try and flee the aggressor. He'd have been in his rights to shoot that guy who was swinging an ax unprovoked, technically trespassing or not.

It's courtesy and I'd rather be where I should than get stopped by cops or have to run from them to keep my bike. I also always open carry when I ride trails and leave space for me to have time to pull my gun if needed.
