  • American Eagle 158 gr .357 mag fired from a 16" barrel Rossi M92 into a Level IIIA panel backed by clay as per NIJ standards.
    Level IIIA is the highest protection level available and is rated to stop 158 gr .357 mag fired from a revolver at approximately 1,400 fps. This ammunition normally produces about 1,200 fps from my wife's 4" S&W Model 13 and about 1,800 fps from her 16" Rossi M92. Will the extra 400 fps produced by a 16" barrel be enough to penetrate the panel?

    My Marlin kicks out Federal158gr. 357 jsp at 1740 fps. It's like hitting a deer with a sledgehammer. Hands down, my favorite combination.

    Velocity kills body Armor. Doesn't matter the material the projectile is made of. Thank you for the video!

      Raini Hawkins yeah, I was leaning toward penetration before I shot the test, but the low sectional density (compared to a rifle bullet) and the flat front gave me pause. Thanks for watching.

    @chopinbloc  9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    @Dean Rachwitz, the 400 fps difference is between the rating for the vest and the velocity from the carbine. I'm bad at maths sometimes, but not that bad.
    Also, please turn on your comments.

    Yesterday I did the same test, but I used a handloaded cartridge: a cast SWC-GC 160gr linotype at ~1700fps from a 20" rossi carbine. It went trought the panel like a hot kifne trought butter...

      I believe that .357 carbines are some of the most underrated guns around.

      I agree... As a policeman, I feel confident with my carbine.
      And of course, I feel much more confident with a 762 FAL, hahaha!
      The bad guys using ballistic vests are a big concern here. A "non-military" rifle like rossi carbine, with this capacity (defeat body armor), always with me, are very desirable.

    Very interesting! Thanks for performing this test. FYI, The difference between 1200 and 1800 is 600, not 400. That's a 50% increase in velocity! Huge difference in performance.

    I want to thank you for the videos you have produced with the .357 mag in the carbine. I have a Marlin 1894c and love to see what various loads will do out of that gun. I have no problem using this weapon as a home defense weapon. I really enjoy your tests.

      I'm glad you've enjoyed them. I plan to continue testing .357 mag from a carbine but I also hope to do more .44 mag carbine videos.

    Nice demo on 357 mag carbine capability! Wondering was round you used? Seems like a soft point or hollow point. What penetration would hard cast get? Of course not the same wound channel, but clearly more penetration.

    What brand of IIIA soft Kevlar is that? I shot one the other day and it withstood 357, 38spl, and some 9mms and 380s. All these rounds to the same panel, surprisingly. It held up good

    • @chopinbloc
      @chopinbloc  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Feces Master I don't know what brand it is. IIIA will normally stop all those. But .357 mag from a carbine is an entirely different beast.

    hey i'm not really knowledgeable about gun shots and body armor but I heard a rumor that if one is shot by those higher caliber loads that even if the bullet is stopped you can still break a rib, rupture and organ, or get a nasty bruise which could lead to a blood clot and kill you. Is this true?

    • @chopinbloc
      @chopinbloc  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you got punched in the tummy could it kill you? Under normal circumstances, probably won't. But if you take a shot from a golden glove boxer? Maybe. Generally speaking, a hit that is stopped by soft armor is unlikely to be fatal. But a 12ga or big bore rifle cartridge could hurt a lot. Might even kill.

    30 carbine will penetrate body armor , will also penetrate 3/8 inch steel plates at 50 yards too.

    • @bigmike9128
      @bigmike9128 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      30 carbine is basically a .357 mag neck down to 7.62 bullet.

  • @farmerdude3578
    @farmerdude3578 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The way I see it, is if you get shot by a 357 riffle. You would be better off without the armor. Ether way your toast.

    If it will punch through body armor, it will probably punch through a wild pig

    • @chopinbloc
      @chopinbloc  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dorene Cristler Maybe. 15" of penetration. Did you watch the gel test? th-cam.com/video/0dMXKHUxjgQ/w-d-xo.html

      The Chopping Block Yes. I ran the numbers ( bullet weight 158 x velocity 1840 x velocity 1840 / 450450 yielded 1187.5 feet per second ). That seems like one dead deer if it hits the vitals.

      Dorene Cristler sorry not 1187.5 fps. I ment 1187.5 foot pounds of energy.

    Holy cow!
    Shows just how much energy is wasted at the blast-gap and the short revolver barrel.
