Been putting this job off for two years, finally got it done thanks to your video. Oil supply line was a bear, broke my first shaved down wrench on the bottom fitting. Second wrench I used a thicker 17mm wrench instead of the narrow 11/16 that I broke. Using a 17mm flare wrench on the line is the only way to go, I don’t think I could have gotten it done if I tried to use an open ended wrench.
My God, I'm just starting to do this and found this vid. THAMK YOU! saved me a ton of figuring out the best way. Now all I need is two wrists and three elbows on each arm
I took it out from the top super easy. I just removed the top manifold as well. 8 bolts. 3 hoses. way easier than taking off the driveshaft. The wrech idea worked great for the turbo line.
Interesting. I have EGR cooler deleted with much more room behind the engine vs stock an no lift so I may try this depending on how I feel at the time. Turbo swap this week.
Absolutely spot on perfect video I just finished swapping in a new turbo on the same vehicle everything you said is exactly correct step by step so thanks for sharing this and I’m sure it’s gonna save someone allot of trouble!!
I own 4 different hose clamp pliers and a cable operated tool. If a mecahnic is clicking away with a hand operated ratchet I say, "whats that weird clicking noise" (get a impact gun)
Thank you kindly. Your video is very useful. I am 3 hrs. into removing mine. doing it only two feet off the garage floor. I should finish in an hr. or so. Thanks for the Oil line trick. I think that's going to be a challenge but, there's no turning back now. Appreciate it.
Hey Richard, I just used your video as a guide to pull the turbo out of my 01 Jetta ALH. Your tutorial was excellent. I was lucky; the oil feed line came right off without twisting. Thanks for your excellent how-to video.
Hi Richard, I have a 1998 VW beetle 1.9 alh. I am leaning toward a bad turbo. No chk engine lights, Heavy smoke under load. No real smoke at idle. I pulled hose off right before intercooler and there was a 1/4 cup of oil. 110 K on car. Changed MAF, and coolant temp sensor.
I'm getting an Under boost code just like this car did, good thing I have a different vehicle I can drive to work while I get this one sorted out. Its a 2003 VW Golf GLS TDI, I've got the exhaust cat back and I don't get the cool noises like the others. Pretty sure that my Veins and Actuator are stuck.
Some good tips there Richard, Pig of a job. I think ive held that oil feed bolt with a screwdriver in the past but i do like it when u make spanners to fit
The EGR pipe bolts are unrecognizable in my case, at over 400k km. The down pipe is more awkward to access but at least the bolts have their shape. I gave it some heavy liquid wrench after striking out last night. Seeing this however has me thinking I should bring it to a friends where they have a lift and an acetylene torch.
great video thanks it helped alot . I got everything removed except the oil line is stuck on the turbo even after loosening off the nut . Im not surte hot to remove it from that point without cutting it.
i think i watched more than 30 of your videos so far. Thank You! i'm a month new to TDIs and am curious. if i may ask. would you know if a ALH is more reliable than the PDs? its for a conversion im doing on a T25.
Sure I would say ALH is more reliable, but PD's are still good. Since PD's don't have a injection pump they fit easier in a conversion engine bay. They also are a bit beefier.
Nightmare job, good video. Have a reconditioned Turbo sitting at home - garage wouldn't fit it because it wasn't supplied by them - not covered by their insurance. Leaking turbo oil collects in boost pipe - can be sucked into intake, I have drain screw fitted.
Dunno exactly which one you're talking about, but it's either the EGR cooler itself (the one that stayed bolted to the head) or the EGR cooler pipe (the one he removed).
Special wrench works every time. I forgot to say in the video that if you pump up the actuator with your mityvac then it moves the lever out of your way a bit.
@@CoolAirVw Ironically I watched Thomas EXOVCDS video on how to remove my turbo and broke that line which brought me here. It had a 14mm nut size although my replacement turbo had a 17mm. Fortunately for me I had the perfect double-sided wrench for both that I made after watching this video. Thanks for the cool mod. Here's a photo of mine: i.ibb.co/mh3HH17/wrench.png
I have tons of "crap wrenches" that I have accumulated over the years I have a drawer full of wrenches that I have modified for special use. If I could borrow your wrench I'll make some "special modifications" to it too!

all righty then!

We certainly disagree on this! To each his own. Of course we are on a lift.

Probably way easier to do it from the top if you have egr cooler deleted

Your welcome!
the struggle is real, when I hear air tools and see the correct hose clamp pliers immediate thumbs up.

I'm so glad my effort is getting some good use. Your welcome, thanks for watching and commenting.
I had to cut a 17mm wrench in half and shave the sides of the open end down to fit on the bottom nut of the oil feed line.
I agree with The Crazy Canuck. From top is by far easier than from below. Because most of us hobby mechanics do not have a car lifting ramp...
different strokes for different folks.

heavy black smoke and lack of power means boost leak
1st I want to say removing those triple square axle bolts that way is very ballsy.

If the nut is removed and the line is still stuck there I think you just need to jar it.

Thanks for the advice I ended up cutting the old one and ordering a flexible braided line.

Can you reuse that turbo to downpipe nuts? What size are they?
Yes. 8mm x 1.25.
Yes really good tips! Btw, where do you get your service info/wiring diagram from, considering all the diesels you work with? Many thanks from Sweden!
Identifix, AllData, and Mitchell On-Demand (Pro-Demand), are the ones available here. I think Mitchell is the same as Snap-on Shop Key.
Oh BBB industries has some free stuff.
BBB industries no longer has free stuff.
I cant get the EGR line off my exhuast manifold, do you think it would still fit out the bottom?
try it and see.

Does this job need a set of triple squares?
We pull the axle loose from the trans so yes. The axle bolts are triple squares.
No swear words at the end😂👍
AMEN!
Once I've unbolted the axle, now what? It won't really move anywhere
A+
thanks
What tool is used for removing the axel bolts, none of my Alan or torx sizes seem to work.
triple spline sometimes called xzn. local autoparts store usually has them.
@@CoolAirVw awesome, thanks!
@@CoolAirVw what size would this specific one be?
@@caleb3815 Its different for manual and auto.
@@CoolAirVw what would it be for a manual 2002 Jetta TDI?
Exactly...and not on a pretty new engine...this one shows the ucky condition of what you WILL find.
I have leak at turbo what can be ?
boost leak? Oil leak? Its normal for the boost tubes to "seep" slight traces of engine oil.
@@CoolAirVw i think i have oil also boost leak i change pipes but still i have loose power when i go uphill or 100kmh
@13:30 I think I'm gonna try wedging a screwdriver in there before I grind down a wrench!
Sometimes works. I've got dozens of ground, bent or otherwise "specialty made" wrenches!
grind a wrench its a dream mate
What is that tube at 14:24? I need a replacement
